Diet Matters For Risk And Recurrence

Overall, the cancer community is in agreement that the best treatment for prostate cancer, like most cancers, is prevention. Although there are scores of new medical treatments developed every year, a healthy plant-based diet is still the gold standard when it comes to dealing with prostate cancer.

Studies have revealed that dairy, egg, and chicken consumption is correlated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, as well as greater odds of recurrence after diagnosis. The reasons are not totally clear, but many nutritional researchers attribute the higher risk at least partially to increased levels of circulating insulin-like growth factor-1 in the blood. Studies suggest that vegans have lower IGF-1 levels than meat-eaters or lacto-ovo vegetarians, potentially putting them at a lower risk for cancers like prostate cancer. IGF-1 is very important for growth and sexual development in children and adolescents, but should naturally decrease with age.

Obesity also increases the risk of prostate cancer as well as the risk of recurrence and aggressiveness after treatment. And whats one of the healthiest ways to avoid or reverse obesity? A growing body of research indicates that a whole foods, plant-based diet demonstrates the ability to improve body weight, fat mass, and insulin resistance markers.

What Is An Enlarged Prostate

An enlargedprostate glandis quite common among menin fact by the time a man is 60 years old there is a 50/50 chance he will develop an enlarged prostate. But what exactly is the prostate glandand why does it become enlarged?

An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia and it affects many men over the age of 50. As men age, testosterone levels drop, which leads to higher estrogen levels. Increased estrogen has been correlated with BPH. High levels of dihydrotestosterone have also been linked to BPH. The key here is to investigate the reason why your prostate is enlarged and pick the appropriate treatment, plus lifestyle changes, to reverse it once and for all. Remember, not all men are created equal.

There are strong links between other health conditions and development of BPH. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other inflammatory conditions pose the greatest risk. Why? Well, there are a few reasons.

First, these conditions are all inflammatory and cause stress to the body. Second, improper blood sugar control leads to insulin resistance, and insulin resistance leads to obesity. Excess fat leads to the storage of estrogen and the resulting decline of testosterone. Finally, highly inflammatory fat diets have been linked to higher levels of prostate problems. These diets also lend themselves to insulin resistance, adding more stress to the system. See a pattern here? Its a vicious cycle.

    Pin on Health

You may have heard that eating a lot of certain foods may be harmful for men with prostate cancer, including:

    • dairy foods and calcium
    • red or processed meat

With all of these foods, some studies have suggested they might be harmful for men with prostate cancer, but other studies havent found a link. This means we cant say for sure whether eating less of these foods can help.

Theres no need to cut these foods out of your diet completely. We need more research to fully understand their effect on prostate cancer, but you can still eat most of these foods in moderate amounts as part of a healthy, balanced diet. However, the World Cancer Research Fund recommends avoiding processed meat, as it can increase your risk of some other types of cancer.

    A Little About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer develops in the prostate, a male sexual gland. And like all cancers, it can be aggressive and spread to other areas of the body where it can become life-threatening. According to the World Journal of Oncology, prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. If you are a man in the US, you have a 1 in 9 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in your lifetime. In 2018, there were approximately 1.3 million new cases globally, with over 164,000 of those in the US.

The American Cancer Society identifies age as the number one risk factor for prostate cancer. That is, the older you are, the more likely you are to have prostate cancer. African American men are also at higher risk of being diagnosed and are more likely to have high-grade, aggressive cancer. But when we take a step back, it becomes clear that prostate cancer rates are much higher in the western world, where diets high in animal products and processed foods are now the norm.

Additionally, population migration studies demonstrate that when men move from an area of the world with comparatively low levels of prostate cancer to an area with higher rates, their risk of prostate cancer also increases. This diet and lifestyle connection demonstrates that there is more at play than just genetics or how many trips a man has made around the sun.

Overview Of Cam Use In Prostate Cancer

Studies of CAM use to treat prostate cancer have shown the following:

    • Men who have prostate cancer are more likely to take dietary supplements and eat certain foods than men who do not have prostate cancer.
    • Men who have prostate cancer and who have healthy eating habits are more likely to take dietary supplements.
    • Men who have prostate cancer use CAM treatments to help boost the immune system, improve quality of life, and lower the risk of the cancer coming back, but only half of them tell their doctors about their use of CAM.

Studies of CAM use to lower prostate cancer risk or to prevent it from coming back have shown the following:

    • A study of men with a family history of prostate cancer found that over half used vitamins or other dietary supplements for prostate health or to prevent cancer.
    • A study of men at a prostate cancer screening clinic found that over half took multivitamins and some took herbal supplements.
    • A study of prostate cancer survivors found that up to one-third took vitamins or minerals.

    Surgery For Prostate Cancer

This treatment option for prostate cancer is usually made available to otherwise healthy patients. Tumors have to be of negligible dimensions and be attached only to the prostate gland in order to be eligible for removal through a surgical procedure.

A prostatectomy is a primary treatment that can cure prostate cancer by extracting the prostate gland and some tissue adjacent to it, depending on the case. However, even after a successful outcome, cancer can relapse if the PSA levels go back above 4.0.

The side effects of this treatment range from erectile dysfunction to a loss of bladder control. Patients need to talk their options through with their doctors in order to make an informed decision.

  • What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found in fatty fish, fish liver oil, and eggs. Vitamin D may also be added to dairy products.

Vitamin D has many actions in the body, including the following:

  • See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using vitamin D.

  • Have any studies of vitamin D been done in people?

Population studies and clinical trials have been done to study the effects of vitamin D on prostate cancer. The results of these studies have been mixed. Some studies have shown a link between Vitamin D levels and prostate cancer, and others have not. There is not enough evidence to know whether giving vitamin D can prevent prostate cancer.

    Combined studies

  • A 2008 review of 45 studies found no link between taking vitamin D and prostate cancer risk.
  • A 2009 study found that men with low levels of sun exposure had an increased risk of prostate cancer and advanced disease.
  • A 2011 review of 25 studies found no link between either vitamin D in the diet or blood levels of vitamin D and the risk of prostate cancer.

    Dietary Guidelines For Prostate Cancer

There are a few guidelines that men with prostate cancer are advised to follow. By optimizing their current dieting habits according to these guidelines, the risk of cancer can be effectively reduced. There will also be a reduced risk of cancer progression in men who have been diagnosed with the disease before.

Here is an overview of the guidelines set out for prostate cancer patients:

    • The diet should primarily focus on the inclusion of plant-based food. You can still include animal foods in your diet, but in moderation.
    • It is important to eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. In fact, it is advised to have as many as 10 servings of fruit and vegetables each day.
    • Fiber should also form an important part of a mans prostate cancer diet.
    • Men should aim to reduce the number of fats in their diet. You should avoid saturated fats as much as possible.
    • The consumption of simple sugars also needs to be limited. These sugars are harmful to the body, leads to low-grade inflammation, and may aggravate prostate cancer.
    • The man should also ensure they drink enough fluids to keep their body hydrated at all times.

The western diet notoriously contains high intakes of red meat, processed meat, pre-packaged foods, butter, candy and sweets, and fried foods. It is a predisposing factor for the onset of diabetes and obesity, which in turn can lead to further health complications.

    General Information And History

Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body, is found in some foods, added to others, available as a dietary supplement, and present in some medicines . Calcium is required for vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion, although less than 1% of total body calcium is needed to support these critical metabolic functions. Serum calcium is very tightly regulated and does not fluctuate with changes in dietary intake the body uses bone tissue as a reservoir for, and source of, calcium to maintain constant concentrations of calcium in blood, muscle, and intercellular fluids.

To evaluate the association between calcium intake and prostate cancer mortality and morbidity, it may be important to assess objective, biological of calcium, include data that account for nutritional and supplemental calcium intake, and control for other confounding factors. However, studies of the association between calcium and prostate cancer have been limited to nutritional sources of calcium, such as dairy products. Although more than half of the U.S. population uses vitamin and mineral supplements , few studies include supplement use in the association of disease risk, including prostate cancer or mortality rates. Can A Diet Cure Prostate Cancer

While following a nutrient-dense diet high in produce may help reduce the risk of disease progression, it cant take the place of medication or medical treatments. Regular medical care is needed in order to effectively treat the disease and eliminate or reduce its recurrence.

If you decide to follow these diet approaches for better health and outcome on your own, you must also stay on top of prescribed treatments and keep all of your medical appointments.

    Red Grapes And Red Wine

One of the best sources of an anti-mutagen antioxidant, , can be found in red grapes and red wine. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce oxidant-caused cell death, which inhibits the production abnormal growth in cells, especially in the intestinal tract. Resveratrol has been shown in numerous studies to inhibit a compound called CoX-2, which has been linked to cancer and pre-cancerous growths. So while Big Pharma is busy trying to sell you their synthetic CoX-2 inhibitors, all you really need is to consume either pure red grape juice, or enjoy a glass of wine with dinner to get all the CoX-2 inhibitors you need.

Recommended Foods For Patients With Prostate Cancer

Research suggests that eating a lot of red meat and saturated fat may increase a mans risk of developing prostate cancer. Some doctors believe that continuing to eat these foods after diagnosis might cause the cancer to progress faster. As such, many medical experts recommend a plant-based diet, and findings from various studies support this notion. A plant-based diet may slow the cancers growth and progression, which can improve the patients outcome.

What does a plant-based diet look like for men with prostate cancer? In general, it consists of more vegetables, fruit, and soy. Therefore, Regional Cancer Care Associates suggests eating more:

    • Fish: Instead of consuming red meat, like steak and burgers, switch to fish, such as salmon and trout. Fish also offers many nutritional benefits, including important omega-3 fatty acids.
    • Fruits: Fruit, nuts, and seeds are also a healthy addition to the diet and serve as an ideal alternative to unhealthy snacks like chips and candy.
    • Vegetables: Incorporate more servings of vegetables into your daily routine, especially leafy greens, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and tomatoes. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, which is believed to have anti-cancer effects. Vegetables are rich in antioxidants , which are protective agents that help stop the DNA-damaging effects of free radicals.

Include Calcium And Vitamin D In Your Diet

Cancer Treatment: Why a Vegetarian Diet Helps

You need calcium in your diet every day to keep your bones and teeth strong and your muscles and nerves healthy. When youre not getting enough calcium from your diet, your body takes calcium from your bones. This can make your bones weak and brittle and cause a disease called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis puts you at greater risk for bone fractures.

Here are tips for getting more calcium in your diet:

    • Have at least 2 to 3 servings of skim or low-fat dairy every day. Include milk, yogurt, or cheese. If you have trouble eating lactose , try lactose-free products, such as Lactaid® milk or soy products.
    • Almonds, leafy greens, soybeans, canned sardines, and salmon are also good sources of calcium.
    • Foods such as cereals and orange juice usually have added calcium.
    • Many people, including women during menopause, need calcium supplements. Speak with your doctor or a dietitian to find out more about your calcium needs.

Your body needs vitamin D so it can absorb the calcium in your diet. Vitamin D is found in dairy products and some fatty fishes. Your body can also make vitamin D from sunlight. Most people get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight. But, if you dont spend much time outside or if you usually keep your skin covered , you may need to take a vitamin D supplement.
