Is Prostate Cancer Preventable? Does Ejaculation Help?

An enlarged prostate, or benign prostate hyperplasia , is extremely common: in fact, according to the National Kidney and Urological Disease Information Clearinghouse, it is the most common prostate problem for men over 50. Like prostatitis, the most common symptoms are painful urination, urinary retention, and frequent urination.

Often, men with BPH can take alpha blockers to relax their bladder muscles and make it easier for them to urinate, or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors to try to reduce the size of their prostate gland by blocking hormones that contribute to prostate growth. A small 2006 case study found that regular prostate massage combined with such medications can also help alleviate symptoms.

What Is The Grade Group

A new system called the Grade Group was introduced in 2014 to further clarify the Gleason Score. This is how it breaks down:

  • Grade Group 1: Gleason Score of 6 or less indicates a slow moving cancer that may not require treatment.

  • Grade Group 2: Gleason Score of 7 though not as slow growing as group 1, this indicates a likely positive outlook

  • Grade Group 3: Gleason Score of 7 faster-moving but still less likely to spread beyond the prostate than groups 4 and 5

  • Grade Group 4: Gleason Score of 8 indicates a cancer that will likely grow and spread quickly.

  • Grade Group 5: Gleason Score of 9 or 10 cancers in this group are twice as likely as Grade Group 4 to grow and spread aggressively.

Eat Tomatoes And Other Red Foods

Tomatoes, watermelon, and other red foods owe their bright color to a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Some recent studies show that men who consume this fruit and tomato-based products have a lower risk of prostate cancer than those who dont. However, the American Institute for Cancer Research cautions that studies linking tomatoes to prostate cancer prevention are limited and ongoing.

A 2018 study from Spain suggest that cooking tomatoes makes it easier for your body to absorb lycopene. The redder the tomato, the better because lycopene accumulates during ripening. That means that pale, store-bought tomatoes that are picked too early have less lycopene than vine-ripened tomatoes.

  • Drinking four to five cups of coffee every day can lower your chances of fatal and high-grade prostate cancer, according to a 2014 review of clinical studies.
  • Regardless of how many cups you drink overall, every three cups of coffee you drink can reduce your risk of fatal prostate cancer about 11 percent.

This describes a dose-response relationship between prostate cancer and coffee. That means the effect on prostate cancer goes up or down with the amount of coffee you drink. These effects may not extend to someone who only grabs an occasional cup.

However, high doses of caffeine can cause major health issues, such as irregular heartbeat and seizures. The Mayo Clinic cautions against ingesting more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, the equivalent of four cups of brewed coffee.

How Masturbating Can Help Lower Your Prostate Cancer Risk By A Third

  • 6:08 ET, Aug 3 2021

MEN who ejaculate at least 21 times a month can lower their prostate cancer risk by a third, doctors have found.

A study revealed that aside from boosting your mood and giving some much needed relief, masturbating or having sex can help ‘prevent cancer’.

Around one in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.

It’s the most common cancer in men and 47,500 men are diagnosed with it each year.

Recently, Luton Town legend Mick Harford revealed he was battling prostate cancer and that he would be having radiotherapy.

Friends star James Michael Tyler also revealed he has stage four prostate cancer and is paralysed from the waist down.

Cancer will strike anyone, but doctors think men who ejaculated more are less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Therefore ejaculating more often could actually help you look after your health.

The study was published in European Urology, with experts saying its worth taking note of the other benefits of frequent ejaculation.

The US scientists looked at data from 31,925 men who logged their monthly ejaculation.

They said: “We found that men reporting higher compared to lower ejaculatory frequency in adulthood were less likely to be subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Additional Types Of Therapy For Prostate Cancer

Can Frequent Ejaculation Lower Prostate Cancer Risk ...

A few other treatments exist for advanced prostate cancer or prostate cancer that has stopped responding well to other forms of hormone therapy. They are usually taken with one of the therapies discussed above.

Chemotherapy. For cases of very aggressive prostate cancer, or when hormone therapy isn’t effective, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy. This class of anti-cancer drug, taken by mouth or injected, fights cancers that have spread beyond the prostate to other parts of your body. The schedule of your treatment will depend on the specific drugs you require, but chemotherapy is typically given in cycles that last two to three weeks. Once you finish a cycle, the next cycle begins. The length of your treatment hinges on how well it works and whether you can cope with the side effects. Chemotherapy drugs are used to help you live longer. They rarely cure prostate cancer, according to the ACS, and can cause unpleasant side effects, including hair loss, nausea, and fatigue.

Immunotherapy. This type of treatment harnesses the power of your immune system to fight cancer. While it has been used successfully in several types of cancer, it hasnt proved as effective in prostate canceryet. Researchers are working to discover the best ways to incorporate immune therapy into prostate cancer care, particularly for men whose cancer no longer responds to hormone treatment. In 2019, more than 100 such studies were underway.

One study, published in the British Journal of Urology International, found that the more ejaculations a man has between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely he is to develop prostate cancer. The findings suggest that a man in his twenties who ejaculates more than seven times a week has one-third the risk of getting an aggressive type of prostate cancer as a man who ejaculates less than three times a week.

The study, done in Australia, relied on questionnaires filled out by men younger than 70, including 1,079 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,259 men who did not have the disease. The authors of the study speculate that ejaculation may have a protective effect against prostate cancer, but they admit that their findings need to be supported by more research.

How Do Doctors Screen For Prostate Cancer

The answer is complicated. While nearly all cases of prostate cancer are discovered during screening for the disease, you and your doctor first must decide if screening is right for you. Lets start there.

First, what is prostate cancer screening? Screening tells your doctor whether or not youre likely to have this disease. Its not a diagnosis but rather helps guide the decision to undergo further testing, such as a biopsy, which will help determine whether you actually do have prostate cancer, how aggressive it is, and If treatment is recommended. The tricky part, as well soon unpack in more detail, is that sometimes you can test positive for prostate cancerand immediate treatment is not recommended.

Lets first go over the initial tests youll likely have if screening is right for you:

What Are The Other Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer

But your gene pool is not the only possible trigger for prostate cancer. Other risk factors include:

  • Advancing age. Prostate cancer rarely occurs in men under 40. Once you turn 50, however, your risk begins to rise. Men over the age of 65 account for more than half of all prostate cancer diagnoses.

  • Race. In the U.S., African American men are about 60% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than white men, and they are two-to-three times more likely to die from it. It can also develop at a younger age. The reasons why are unclear. Genetic differences may account for some of the differences, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , as well as systemic disparities in healthcare, which can lead to less access to cancer care, including screenings for early detection.

You cant change risk factors like your age or your race. But can your diet and other lifestyle habits change your level of risk?

Prostate Cancer Prevention Tips

Can Frequent Ejaculations Reduce The Risk Of Prostate Cancer?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say. Healthy eating is one example of how prostate cancer may be prevented and, in turn, how you can help keep your sex life humming along. According to Prostate Cancer Canada, a diet high in red meat or full-fat dairy products and low in fruits and vegetables seems to increase the risk of the disease. So theres one cancer-preventing tip already. Out with the Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and meat-lovers pizza, and in with the apples and asparagus!

It Can Help Improve Urine Flow

Urine should come out in a steady steam, but if a man has a swollen prostate or an inflammation, the prostate can irritate the bladder, causing the urine flow from the bladder through the urethra to be slow or even cut off.

“The improvements seen in urine flow from prostate massage again can be the result of decreasing inflammation in the prostate, which may be contributing to a man’s urinary problems,” says Gonzalez. Men can also try Kegel exercises if they’re experiencing issues with urine flow.

Frequent Ejaculation May Protect Against Cancer

By Shaoni Bhattacharya

Frequent sexual intercourse and masturbation protects men against a common form of cancer, suggests the largest study of the issue to date yet.

The US study, which followed nearly 30,000 men over eight years, showed that those that ejaculated most frequently were significantly less likely to get prostate cancer. The results back the findings of a smaller Australian study revealed by New Scientist in July 2003 that asserted that masturbation was good for men.

In the US study, the group with the highest lifetime average of ejaculation 21 times per month were a third less likely to develop the cancer than the reference group, who ejaculated four to seven times a month.

Michael Leitzmann, at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and colleagues set out to test a long-held theory that suggested the opposite that a higher ejaculation rate raises the risk of prostate cancer. The good news is it is not related to an increased risk, he told New Scientist. In fact, it may be associated with a lower risk.

It goes a long way to confirm the findings from our recent case-control study, says Graham Giles, who led the Australian study. He praises the studys large size including about 1500 cases of prostate cancer.

What Causes Prostate Cancer

Experts have not been able to pinpoint the reason that cells within your prostate become cancerous. However, a number of factors appear to play some part in triggering the process.

Your cells have specific instructions regarding what theyre supposed to do: when to grow, when to divide and form new cells, and when to die. They get those instructions from your genes, which you inherit from your parents, and which are made up of DNA, a chemical within your cells. That DNA can be damaged, causing genes to send the wrong instructions to your cells. For example, genes that normally help prevent cells from growing out of control may stop working properly. And that may lead to cancer.

Why does this happen? In some cases, you inherit faulty genes from one or both of your parents, or you have a family history of other types of cancers.

It Can Alleviate Painful Ejaculation

Painful ejaculation is rare, but it happens. It can come from infection or inflammation in the epididymis , prostate, seminal vesicles, and/or urethra. It can also signal a blockage in the ejaculatory duct. “Massage can reduce prostate inflammation and make ejaculation less painful,” says Mills.

Another cause of painful ejaculation can be tight pelvic floor muscles, which can occur when men have an inflammation or infection of the prostate. Again, Gonzalez says doing Kegels can help. “Manual manipulation of those muscles during prostate massage can further alleviate ejaculatory pain. This is definitely something you would want a specialist to work on with you,” he says.

Men, you can now legitimately tell the women in your life that more frequent ejaculation can reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

A new study by Harvard University has found that men who ejaculate 21 times a month or more have a significant reduction of between 19 per cent and 22 per cent in their risk of getting prostate cancer.

In 1992, Harvard University researchers analysed 31,925 healthy men who filled out a questionnaire about monthly ejaculation frequency. The participants in the study were followed until 2010. Of these, 3,839 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Frequent ejaculation is not associated with a higher risk for prostate cancer but may be linked to a decreased risk of the cancer.

Sexual activity has been previously believed to play a role in the development of prostate cancer. Dr Michael Leitzmann of the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and colleagues, examined the association between ejaculation frequency and the risk of prostate cancer .

The study used follow up data from the health professionals follow up study which was started in 1986 when 51 529 predominantly white, male American health professionals aged 40 to 75 years responded to a questionnaire about their medical history and known or suspected risk factors for cancer and other chronic diseases. Subsequently, follow up questionnaires were mailed every two years.

In 1992, the questionnaire included an assessment of frequency of ejaculation. About 29 000 men in the United States, aged 46 to 81 years, provided information on history of ejaculation frequency.

Ejaculation frequency was assessed by asking participants to report the average number of ejaculations they had per month during the ages of 20 to 29 years, 40 to 49 years, and during the past year. Among the participants, there were 1449 new cases of total prostate cancer, 953 organ confined cases, and 147 advanced cases of prostate cancer.

What Are The Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Nearly all men diagnosed with prostate cancer learn they have the disease while its still in its early stages, before symptoms occur. Screening for prostate cancer, which well get into next, picks up as many as nine out of 10 cases.

So, what happens when the cancer is not caught in early stages? More advanced prostate cancer can cause the following symptoms:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Weak stream when urinating, along with dribbling or interrupted flow

  • Blood in your urine or semen

  • Pain in your bones, where prostate cancer often first spreads

See your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. While they could signal cancer, some symptoms may arise from other conditions. For example, benign prostatic hyperplasia causes your prostate to grow. It is a common and non-cancerous culprit of urinary difficulties in men over 50.

How Are Prostate Cancer Stages Determined

Once all testing has been completed, your doctor will tell you the stage of your cancer, or how much it has progressed and whether it has spread beyond your prostate. The stage will help your medical team decide which treatment is best for you. The higher the stage, the more advanced your cancer. The most common way to stage prostate cancer is the TNM system, developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer, which hinges on three important factors:

  • T : How much of your prostate the tumor affects

  • N : Whether the cancer has spread beyond your prostate to nearby lymph nodes

  • M : Whether your cancer has metastasized, or spread far beyond your prostate to your bones, to nearby organs such as your bladder or rectum, or to more distant organs like your lungs, liver, or brain.

The TNM system also includes your PSA level and your Grade Group, based on your Gleason score. With your stage designated, which is labeled in a range of T1 to T4 , a treatment plan can be developed.
