Pomegranate Juice May Slow Prostate Cancer Progression

According to a study presented at the American Urological Associations annual meeting in 2009, drinking 8 ounces of pomegranate juice a day may slow the progression of prostate cancer.

The study included 48 men who had a rising prostate-specific antigen level following radiation therapy or surgery to treat localized prostate cancer. At the start of the study in 2003, the men had PSA levels greater than 0.2 and less than 5.0 ng/ml, and an average PSA doubling time of 15.4 months. In 2006, researchers reported that the men who drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily had slower PSA doubling times.

Since then, researchers continued to follow the participants, 15 of whom stuck with the study for as long as 64 months. They found that the PSA doubling times of the men who kept drinking pomegranate juice were about four times longer than the PSA doubling times at the studys start and longer than the PSA doubling times of the men who stopped drinking the juice.

For those who want to try pomegranate juice, one note of caution: its high in calories. An 8-ounce glass of POM Wonderful, the juice used in the study, contains 160 calories, 50 calories more than a typical glass of orange juice.

How To Add More Fish To Your Diet

Adding more omega-3s to your diet can be as easy as cracking open a can of sardines or tuna. Not everyone is so enthusiastic about fish, though. Plus, it can also be expensive.

If you havent enjoyed fish in the past, try a different type. Each one has a unique flavor. The flavor is also milder if the fish is fresh, so you may enjoy fish more if you buy it from a fish counter and make it that day.

Cod, flounder, and trout have milder flavors. Try topping your fish with a lemon sauce or adding it to another prostate-friendly food. For example, you could try baked cod in a tomato sauce.

To stretch your dollar, you can also add fish to dishes like pasta, soup, salad, or sandwiches. That way you wont need as much fish to make a complete meal.

You can also ask your healthcare provider about taking omega-3 supplements.

Summary

Fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, contain healthful omega-3 fatty acids. These compounds may help keep the prostate healthy, though more studies are needed.

If youve already been diagnosed with prostate cancer, there is still hope. Thats because many prostate cancers grow slowly and may not require surgery or other treatment quickly. But remember that active surveillance, which is regular monitoring, for men with low-risk or low-grade prostate cancer is the first line of attack. During this active surveillance stage, prostate cancer is closely monitored for any signs of progression.

The surgical approach to treating prostate cancer is a prostatectomy. This is the removal of the prostate gland. Although it depends on the stage of cancer, men in the early stage of the disease will undergo a radical prostatectomy, which is the removal of the entire prostate gland, plus the tissue that surrounds it.

Radiotherapy, on the other hand, involves the use of numerous types of X-rays to treat cancer with exposure to radiation.

Hormone therapy, also known as androgen-deprivation therapy , is also engineered to stop the release of testosterone in order to prevent it from acting on prostate cells. Hormone therapy is increasingly used before, during, or after local treatment. It has long played a vital role in men with advancing prostate cancer.

But you can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer by taking some real interest in your health and bringing awareness of the disease to the men closest to you.

Psa Test Does Not Indicate Much At All Other Than The General State Of Health In The Prostate

As we spoke about in previous articles, the PSA test does not indicate much at all other than the general state of health in the prostate. PSA testing for the purpose of prostate cancer screening was 1st debunked in the Stanford University News in 2004 when it said:

The most commonly used screening tool for detecting prostate cancer the PSA test is virtually worthless for predicting mens risk of contracting the disease, medical school researchers have determined. Stanford scientists studied prostate tissues collected in the 20 years since a high PSA test result became the standard for prostate removal. They concluded that as a screen, the test indicates nothing more than the size of the prostate gland2.

However, most urologists disagree. Let me explain why An enlarged prostate is, by definition, a sick one. The enlargement comes about as a result of constant irritation of the prostate gland over the decades.

The only important issue is that there is a correlation between an enlarged prostate and prostate disease, including prostate cancer.

That is not to say, however, that an enlarged prostate makes prostate cancer inevitable. But where there is irritation, there is inflammation, and where there is inflammation, cancer has a higher chance of being a consequence.
