The initial screening identified 43,921 articles from Web of Knowledge, 61,591 articles from PubMed, 341 articles from Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure , and 412 articles from Wan Fang Med Online. After the duplicated publications from different databases were excluded and the title and abstract reviewed, 41 articles were further reviewed for full text. There are 2 additional articles that were searched from the references of reviewed articles. Eleven articles that did not obtain RR and 95%CI, 12 review articles, 6 animal or cell articles, and 2 letters to the editors were further excluded. Therefore, 12 articles were left for this study. Eight studies were cohort design, 5 studies were case-control design, and the remaining 1 study was RCTs. Six studies came from Europe, 5 from America, and 1 from Asia. All of the suitable studies included 13,483 prostate cancer cases and 286,245 participants. The characteristics of the included studies are summarized in Table .

One of the most controversial questions in the integrative oncology field is whether cancer patients should avoid whey protein. Some people contend that dairy products may increase the growth of cancer cells since they contain amino acids and growth factors. Dairy products do contain a molecule called insulin-like growth factor , which has the same activity as the naturally produced human form. As a clinician, I recommend that patients avoid any foods that will up-regulate growth factors since that may contribute to the growth of cancer cells.1 So, as part of an anti-cancer diet it would be prudent to avoid refined sugars and dairy products, but does this apply to whey protein products as well?
There really is no clear consensus on this question. The following are a few points we need to consider before forming an opinion.
1. Its difficult to extrapolate data on food to whey protein consumption. Milk contains much more IGF-1 than a good quality whey supplement. It also contains many other things that whey does not . Many people lump dairy products into the same category as whey but they actually are quite different and should not be considered the same.
3. In some cases the anabolic nature of whey may be advantageous and even desired. For example, in cachexia whey protein is superior to veggie proteins in maintaining weight.3 Preventing or slowing weight loss in cancer is a very important therapeutic target.
Whey Beats Soy For Muscle Building
When comparing whey and soy protein for muscle-building purposes, whey protein has the upper hand in more than one way. A study published in 2013 in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition” found that whey protein was absorbed more quickly, had higher concentrations of amino acids important for muscle building and therefore resulted in greater muscle protein synthesis than soy protein. Additionally, whey protein has beneficial effects on hormones that can help build muscle, whereas soy protein does not, according to another 2013 study published in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition.” The authors concluded that whey protein reduces cortisol — a hormone that can break down muscle — following exercise, whereas soy protein can lower levels of the male hormone testosterone, which is important for muscle growth.

COLUMBUS, Ohio New research suggests that whey, a liquid byproduct from cheese production, may play a role in helping prevent prostate cancer. When Ohio State University food scientists treated human prostate cells in the lab with whey protein, cellular levels of the antioxidant glutathione increased. Antioxidants such as glutathione have been shown to control cancer-causing free radicals.
Cancer researchers suspect that the accumulation of free radicals plays a role in the development of prostate cancer.
In the current study, the Ohio State scientists found that treating prostate cells with whey protein elevated glutathione levels in the cells by up to 64 percent.
“The buildup of free radicals is associated with the onset of many chronic illnesses, such as heart disease and cancer,” said Joshua Bomser, a study co-author and an assistant professor of food science and technology at Ohio State. “And human prostate tissue is particularly susceptible to oxidative stress.”
The study appears in a recent issue of the journal Toxicology in Vitro. Bomser conducted the study with Kyle Kent, a graduate student in the department of food science at Ohio State, and W. James Harper, the J.T. “Stubby” Parker Chair in Food Science and Technology, also at the university.
