Clinical Studies On Ivc In Combination Treatments

Ask Dr. Nandi: Killing cancer with Vitamin C

Most of the clinical studies presented in this section dose-escalated VitC to achieve â¥20âmM plasma ascorbate concentrations. In general, this was achieved when administering 75âg infusions at least 3 times weekly, and was not significantly further increased at 100âg or more . For those studies administering per kg of body weight, amounts â¥1.0âg VitC/kg were needed to achieve plasma levels of at least 20âmM. We focus in detail only on those studies administering â¥1.0âg/kg orââ¥â75âg andââ¥â10âg whole body dose .

Clinical studies combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy

Consistent with positive data obtained from animal and other pre-clinical studies, several of these phase I/II studies reported trends towards increased disease control and objective response rates, although all were underpowered for detection of efficacy. In the randomized trial of Ma et al. in ovarian cancer , the median time for disease progression was 8.75âmonths longer with ascorbate addition to standard chemotherapy than in chemotherapy alone. Single group studies showed favourable OS and PFS compared to historical controls and institutional averages .

Clinical studies using VitC in combination with targeted therapy

While all these completed trials studied combinations of chemo- and targeted therapies only, 3 ongoing trials are now investigating the addition of IVC to targeted agents only .

How Your Diet Promotes A Healthy Prostate

The Mediterranean Diet has a strong association between lowering cancer risk and preventing heart disease. This is attributed to the fact that this diet is focused on whole foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans while also focusing on healthy unsaturated fats from plants. With this style of eating, theres also an emphasis on decreasing processed or refined foods along with lowering intake of red meat or processed red meats. It allows alcohol in moderation and its focus on whole foods supports adequate fiber intake. It also allows for a wide range of foods, which means its more of a lifestyle rather than just a fad diet.

RELATED: How the Mediterranean Diet May Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease

Since this style of eating has a positive impact on cancer prevention, adopting healthy eating habits now could help prevent prostate problems down the road. Some nutrients and vitamins can have a very positive effect on the health of your prostate. Making sure youre getting the right nutrients as part of a balanced diet can play an important role in the health of your prostate.

The Role Of Intravenous Vitamin C

Best Vitamin C Prostate Cancer

In a study published in the journal anticancer drugs in 2012, results of high-dose vitamin C induced cytotoxicity in five of the six tested prostate cancer lines. The mechanism of action seems to be through the production of hydrogen peroxide that causes cancer cell death.

This opens up a possible pathway of care for patients facing the diagnosis of early prostate cancer, especially if they have other medical conditions that would make surgery, radiation or chemo therapy more risky.

A functional approach including high-dose intravenous vitamin C, nutritional and supplement therapy, has the potential to blunt cancer progression while delivering enhanced quality of life.

This approach certainly is not for everybody. Careful consultation should be undertaken with a Doctor specialized in intravenous cancer therapy, as well as with your conventional physicians. Ultimately, some patients just are psychologically incapable of living with the knowledge that there are a few cancer cells in their body. For others, who are enlightened to the fact cancer cells are generated on a regular basis, only to be defeated by our bodies immune system, a progressive nonsurgical approach may be worth considering.

Fortunately, prostate cancer is typically a slow moving affair. This gives you time to think, reflect and consider all options before your final decision.

Superfoods For A Healthy Prostate

A balanced diet may reduce your risk for prostate problems.

The prostate, which is part of the male reproductive system, is a gland that surrounds the bladder and urethra. It is about the size of a walnut and grows throughout a mans life. As you age, its important to maintain a healthy prostate. The gland can become enlarged, and prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men.

Theres no definitive evidence that good nutrition can prevent prostate problems, but eating a healthy balanced diet may reduce your risk. Building a meal and snack around veggies and fruit is a smart idea for health in general, and particularly a healthy prostate, says Chris Mohr, PhD, RD, nutrition expert for New York Times bestseller LL Cool Js Platinum Workout and advisory board member for Mens Fitness magazine.

Here are six foods you can eat to boost your prostate health.

Symptomatic treatment of an enlarged prostate usually involves a combination of medication and lifestyle changes. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may be the best option if you suffer from chronic urination. It will help the body adjust to the increased size of the prostate. Also, taking regular urination intervals will help retrain the bladder to function properly. Inactivity also contributes to urine retention, and cold temperatures can increase the urge to urinate.

Invasive treatment of enlarged prostate includes medication that relieves the pressure on the urethra and bladder. However, if the condition is severe, it may require surgical intervention. If treatment is not successful, the enlarged prostate can become a potentially life-threatening disease. As the hormone levels in the body change, the enlarged prostate can lead to various complications, including urinary retention and even cancer. This is why it is critical to see a doctor for further evaluation.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance

The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin C is based on the amount of vitamin C intake necessary to maintain neutrophil vitamin C concentration with minimal urinary excretion of vitamin C and is proposed to provide sufficient antioxidant protection . The recommended intake for smokers is 35 mg/day higher than for nonsmokers, because smokers are under increased oxidative stress from the toxins in cigarette smoke and generally have lower blood concentrations of vitamin C .

Background: Vitamin C is a reducing agent and free radical scavenger, acting as antioxidant in plasma membranes and within cells. Based on these properties, a role for vitamin C in cancer incidence has been suspected. There are as yet few large population-based studies focusing on prostate cancer, with the preponderant evidence leaning toward the absence of an association. Nevertheless, many previous studies overlooked prostate cancer aggressiveness, as well as screening and detection issues, which could bias potential associations.

Methods: The Prostate Cancer and Environment Study is a population-based case-control study conducted in Montreal, Canada. In-person interviews, conducted with 1,916 histologically confirmed prostate cancer cases and 1,985 population controls, elicited information on a wide range of socio-demographic, lifestyle, and medical factors, including PSA screening. Usual frequency of consumption of 63 food items two years prior to diagnosis/interview was collected, along with use of dietary supplements. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals between vitamin C intake and prostate cancer were estimated using logistic or polytomous regression, adjusting for potential confounders.

Cyberknife Therapy For Prostate Cancer

One thing this is certain, if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the experts at CyberKnife Miami can help you decide what treatment is best for you.

CyberKnife is not a knife at all. It is a cutting-edge radiation technology also known as Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy or SBRT. It can destroy prostate cancer with precision leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed.

Since the prostate is close to several vital organs, traditional treatment for prostate cancer can be life-altering. It can interfere with urinary, bowel and sexual function. With CyberKnife, there are minimal side effects, including urinary and rectal irritation and lethargy. Medication can help minimize these, and they usually go away in a few weeks.

CybeKnife has a 97-percent cure rate for prostate cancer according to Dr. Mark Pomper, board certified radiation oncologist and medical director of CyberKnife Miami.

The Controversial History Of High

Utilizing high doses of vitamin C as a cancer therapy is no exception to this controversy. Nearly 60 years ago Toronto physician William McCormick observed that cancer patients often presented with severely low levels of vitamin C in their blood and featured scurvy-like symptoms, leading him to postulate that vitamin C might protect against cancer by increasing collagen synthesis. In 1972, extending this theory, Ewan Cameron, a Scottish surgeon, hypothesized that ascorbate could suppress cancer development by inhibiting hyaluronidase, which otherwise weakens the extracellular matrix and enables cancer to metastasize. He began treating terminally ill cancer patients and published a case report of 50 patients in which some of the treated patients benefited from high dose vitamin C.

Vitamin C For Prostate Health

The diagnosis of early prostate cancer leaves most men in a horrible dilemma. Subject themselves to treatments that could affect their sexual function, their urinary control, and their overall sense of well-being, or face the prospect of the cancer progressing. To make matters more vexing, most men feel just fine at the time the diagnosis is rendered and elevated PSA may be the only early hint. Prostate biopsies are needed to confirm the presence of disease in the prostate gland.

Combination Therapies With Vitamin D Compounds

While 1,252D3 compounds have shown encouraging activity in preclinical models, single agents usually have limited effect in clinical cancer therapy. 1,252D3 compound-based combination therapies are being explored and enhance antitumor efficacy.

Glucocorticoids

Among the first compounds whose interaction with vitamin D was examined were glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids have direct anticancer effects in their own right and are effective in reducing vitamin D-induced hypercalcemia. Glucocorticoids enhance VDR expression in many cell types. The extent to which this occurs varies with tissue type, tumor types, and species. Preclinical studies demonstrate synergistic antitumor effects of calcitriol and glucocorticoids in human prostate cancer xenografts, and the ability of dexamethasone to counteract calcitriol-induced hypercalcemia led to many clinical trials incorporating dexamethasone with calcitriol.8,65

Inhibitors of CYP24A1

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

As noted above, inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis may potentiate the activity of vitamin D compounds. A Phase II trial evaluating the combination of the nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug naproxen and high-dose calcitriol in patients with early recurrent prostate cancer demonstrated some benefits in terms of reduction in prostate-specific antigen doubling time.73

Findings On Vitamin D And Prostate Cancer

Dr. Bruce Hollis, a GrassrootsHealth scientist panel member, was one of the first to study giving larger doses of vitamin D to participants, something that was difficult to get approval for before 2010.

Hollis and colleagues ran an intervention study at the Medical University of South Carolina on 52 men who had been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer. They purposely did not conduct an RCT as they wished to give everyone in the study vitamin D. They used a dose of 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D for one full year while the participants were on a wait and see approach with their cancer.

In the video below, Dr. Hollis describes the study and its findings in detail.

The overall result was that almost 60% had a reduction in tumors as opposed to doing nothing .

Of the 52 men, 15 went from a Gleason score of 6 to a Gleason score of 0 .

Questions And Answers About Green Tea

Does Vitamin E or Vitamin C Prevent Prostate Cancer?
  • What is green tea?

Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. The way tea leaves are processed determines whether green tea, black tea, or oolong tea is made. Green tea leaves are steamed and dried.

The health benefits studied in green tea are thought to be from compounds called polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of plant chemicals that include catechins . Catechins make up most of the polyphenols in green tea.

Catechins in green tea can vary widely, depending on the source of the tea leaves and the way they are processed. This makes it hard to identify most of the chemical factors linked to the health benefits of green tea.

Some studies suggest that green tea may protect against heart and blood vessel disease.

  • How is green tea given or taken?

People usually drink green tea or take it as a dietary supplement.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using green tea?

    • Vitamin E and selenium.

SELECT results published in 2011 showed that men taking vitamin E alone had a 17% increase in prostate cancer risk compared with men who did not take vitamin E.

Several factors may have affected study results, including the dose of vitamin E.

    Clinical trials

    • In the Physicians Health Study II, men took either vitamin E supplements, vitamin C supplements, or both and were followed for about 8 years. The overall rates of prostate cancer were similar in the men who took vitamin E supplements and in those who did not. Vitamin E did not affect the number of new cases of cancer or the number of deaths from cancer.
    • A 2011 study of men who took part in The Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial found that, among those who were current smokers, higher blood levels of alpha-tocopherols and gamma-tocopherols were linked with lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer. In another study of men who were current smokers or who recently stopped smoking, higher blood levels of alpha-tocopherol were linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer.
  • Have any side effects or risks been reported from vitamin E?

In the Physicians Health Study II and the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study Group, there was a higher number of strokes caused by a broken blood vessel in the brain in men who took vitamin E than in men who took a placebo.
