Can Prostate Cancer Be Cured

Must read

Seven Types Of Standard Treatment Are Used:

Can Advanced Prostate Cancer Be Cured?

Watchful waiting or active surveillance

Watchful waiting and active surveillance are treatments used for older men who do not have signs or symptoms or have other medical conditions and for men whose prostate cancer is found during a screening test.

Watchful waiting is closely monitoring a patients condition without giving any treatment until signs or symptoms appear or change. Treatment is given to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

Active surveillance is closely following a patient’s condition without giving any treatment unless there are changes in test results. It is used to find early signs that the condition is getting worse. In active surveillance, patients are given certain exams and tests, including digital rectal exam, PSA test, transrectal ultrasound, and transrectal needle biopsy, to check if the cancer is growing. When the cancer begins to grow, treatment is given to cure the cancer.

Other terms that are used to describe not giving treatment to cure prostate cancer right after diagnosis are observation, watch and wait, and expectant management.

Surgery

Patients in good health whose tumor is in the prostategland only may be treated with surgery to remove the tumor. The following types of surgery are used:

Choosing A Prostate Cancer Surgeon

When you are choosing a surgeon to treat your prostate cancer, it is important to select someone you trust and have confidence in. He or she should have enough experience to not only perform the operation you need but also to make an informed clinical judgment and change course, if necessary.

The prostate cancer experts at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance recommend choosing a surgeon who has done at least 250 prostatectomies total and who does at least 40 a year.

As you consider your options, you might want to ask your surgeon these questions.

  • Which procedure does your surgeon prefer and why?
  • What type of surgery does he or she recommend for you?
  • Is nerve-sparing surgery an option?
  • How many of these surgeries has he or she performed?
  • How many of these surgeries does he or she do each year?
  • What are the statistics on incontinence and impotence for your surgeon√Ęs patients?
  • Can Prostate Cancer Be Cured Surgically

Today, most of these procedures are done in a way that attempts to spare the nerves that control your bladder function and erections. More surgeons today are performing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, in which the surgeon makes several small incisions and uses three or four robotic arms to do the work. The robotic arms eliminate hand tremors and provide extremely fine control for precise surgical instrument movement inside the body.

Overall, surgery is more likely than radiation to cause urinary and sexual problems early on, but research suggests the difference in risk narrows over time. Most men lose control of their ability to urinate after surgery, but urinary problems gradually improve in the vast majority of men. Estimates of post-prostatectomy impotence varyfrom about 20 to 70 percentaccording to different studies.

    Early Stage Prostate Cancer

If the cancer is small and localized, a doctor may recommend:

    Watchful waiting or monitoring

The doctor may check PSA blood levels regularly but take no immediate action.

Prostate cancer grows slowly, and the risk of side effects may outweigh the need for immediate treatment.

    Surgery

A surgeon may carry out a prostatectomy. They can remove the prostate gland using either laparoscopic or open surgery.

    Radiation therapy

    Options include:

Brachytherapy: A doctor will implant radioactive seeds into the prostate to deliver targeted radiation treatment.

Conformal radiation therapy: This targets a specific area, minimizing the risk to healthy tissue. Another type, called intensity modulated radiation therapy, uses beams with variable intensity.

Treatment will depend on various factors. A doctor will discuss the best option for the individual.

What Are Prostate Cancer Treatment Side Effects

Prostate Cancer Treatment with Home Remedies that Work ...

Some prostate cancer treatments can affect the bladder, erectile nerves and sphincter muscle, which controls urination. Potential problems include:

    • Incontinence: Some men experience urinary incontinence. You may leak urine when you cough or laugh, or you may feel an urgent need to use the bathroom even when your bladder isnt full. This problem can improve over the first six to 12 months without treatment.
    • Erectile dysfunction : Surgery, radiation and other treatments can damage the erectile nerves and affect your ability to get or maintain an erection. Some men regain erectile function within a year or two . In the meantime, medications like sildenafil or tadalafil can help by increasing blood flow to the penis.
    • Infertility: Treatments can affect your ability to produce or ejaculate sperm, resulting in male infertility. If you think you might want children in the future, you can preserve sperm in a sperm bank before you start treatments. After treatments, you may undergo sperm extraction. This procedure involves removing sperm directly from testicular tissue and implanting it into a womans uterus.

What Is The Life Expectancy Of Someone With Prostate Cancer

The life expectancy of someone with prostate cancer varies depending on the severity of a persons diagnosis, what stage they are at and how well they respond to treatment.

The five-year survival rate for early-stage patients is 98%. For late stages, it falls to about 16%.

It has been estimated that 85% of all men who die from prostate cancer have metastatic disease which means their mortality risk is linked primarily to the aggressiveness rather than location or grade of the tumour.

Prostate cancer can spread throughout the body by bone, lymph nodes, lungs/liver, the brain via blood vessels in addition, entire parts of some organs like testicles may be removed during surgery leaving nothing but scar tissue behind.

What Are The Stages Of Prostate Cancer

Your healthcare provider uses the Gleason score and Grade Groups to stage prostate cancer based on its projected aggressiveness. To get this information, the pathologist:

    • Assigns a grade to each type of cell in your sample. Cells are graded on a scale of three to five . Samples that test in the one to two range are considered normal tissue.
    • Adds together the two most common grades to get your Gleason score .
    • Uses the Gleason score to place you into a Grade Group ranging from one to five. A Gleason score of six puts you in Grade Group 1 . A score of nine or higher puts you in Grade Group five . Samples with a higher portion of more aggressive cells receive a higher Grade Group.

    Is Prostate Cancer Curable

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men, second only to skin cancer. Learning that one has any type of cancer isnt easy, but the first question on most patients minds after diagnosis is, is prostate cancer curable?

The short answer is yes, prostate cancer can be cured, when detected and treated early. The vast majority of prostate cancer cases are discovered in the early stages, making the tumors more likely to respond to treatment. Treatment doesnt always have to mean surgery or chemotherapy, either. Non-invasive radiation therapy can effectively treat prostate cancer in the case of Pasadena CyberKnife, radiosurgery treatment generally takes less than a week, and you can typically resume your normal activities the same day you receive treatment.

    Considering Complementary And Alternative Methods

    Can Prostate Cancer be Cured?

You may hear about alternative or complementary methods that your doctor hasnt mentioned to treat your cancer or relieve symptoms. These methods can include vitamins, herbs, and special diets, or other methods such as acupuncture or massage, to name a few.

Complementary methods refer to treatments that are used along with your regular medical care. Alternative treatments are used instead of a doctors medical treatment. Although some of these methods might be helpful in relieving symptoms or helping you feel better, many have not been proven to work. Some might even be harmful.

Be sure to talk to your cancer care team about any method you are thinking about using. They can help you learn what is known about the method, which can help you make an informed decision.

There Are Three Ways That Cancer Spreads In The Body

Cancer can spread through tissue, the lymph system, and the blood:

    • Tissue. The cancer spreads from where it began by growing into nearby areas.
    • Lymph system. The cancer spreads from where it began by getting into the lymph system. The cancer travels through the lymph vessels to other parts of the body.
    • Blood. The cancer spreads from where it began by getting into the blood. The cancer travels through the blood vessels to other parts of the body.

Differences Between Homeopathic And Allopathic Medicine

Understanding the difference helps make decisions about seeking treatment for an illness.

    • Allopathic is a system in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery.
    • Homeopathic is a medical system based on the belief that the body can cure itself. Those who practice it use tiny amounts of natural substances, like plants and minerals. They believe these stimulate the healing process.

Homeopathy is based on two main principles.

The first is that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used in diluted form to treat symptoms and illnesses, a principle is known as like-cures-like.

Second the more diluted the substance, the more potent it is, known as the law of infinitesimals, according to the FDA.

Thinking About Taking Part In A Clinical Trial

Clinical trials are carefully controlled research studies that are done to get a closer look at promising new treatments or procedures. Clinical trials are one way to get state-of-the art cancer treatment. In some cases they may be the only way to get access to newer treatments. They are also the best way for doctors to learn better methods to treat cancer. Still, they’re not right for everyone.

If you would like to learn more about clinical trials that might be right for you, start by asking your doctor if your clinic or hospital conducts clinical trials.

    Early Prostate Cancer Is Curable

    Not Your Father

Former President Nelson Mandela had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2001. He received radiotherapy for seven weeks, but his lifespan is unlikely to be reduced, his doctors said.

Mr Mandelas cancer was not of a high grade and should not decrease his life span, his doctors told News24 in July last year after the diagnosis.

How was it diagnosed?Mandela had been monitored regularly for the prostate specific antigen that indicates cancer. Although the clinical picture revealed no alteration in his status, there has been a slight rise in the blood level of the PSA. In view of this, a decision was made to biopsy the prostate gland, which confirmed the presence of microscopic cancer within the prostate, his doctors confirmed at the time.

Mr Mandela received hormonal treatment for a while, and underwent a seven-week course of radiotherapy with curative intent. This treatment was localised to the prostate gland. He did not require any surgery or chemotherapy.

Most of Mandela’s prostate gland was removed in an operation in 1990.

Facts about prostate cancerProstate cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in all men in South Africa.

One in ten men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Early prostate cancer is often completely asymptomatic, making detection difficult. For this reason, regular screening for prostate cancer needs to be done, especially in men over 50.

    Treating Advanced Prostate Cancer

If the cancer has reached an advanced stage, it’s no longer possible to cure it. But it may be possible to slow its progression, prolong your life and relieve symptoms.

    Treatment options include:

    • hormone treatment
    • chemotherapy

If the cancer has spread to your bones, medicines called bisphosphonates may be used. Bisphosphonates help reduce bone pain and bone loss.

    Surgically Removing The Prostate Gland

A radical prostatectomy is the surgical removal of your prostate gland. This treatment is an option for curing prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate or has not spread very far.

Like any operation, this surgery carries some risks.

A recent trial showed possible long-term side effects of radical prostatectomy may include an inability to get an erection and urinary incontinence.

Before having any treatment, 67% of men said they could get erections firm enough for intercourse.

When the men who had a radical prostatectomy were asked again after 6 months, this had decreased to 12%. When asked again after 6 years, it had slightly improved to 17%.

For urinary incontinence, 1% of men said they used absorbent pads before having any treatment.

When the men who had a radical prostatectomy were asked again after 6 months, this had increased to 46%. After 6 years, this had improved to 17%.

Out of the men who were actively monitored instead, 4% were using absorbent pads at 6 months and 8% after 6 years.

In extremely rare cases, problems arising after surgery can be fatal.

It’s possible that prostate cancer can come back again after treatment. Your doctor should be able to explain the risk of your cancer coming back after treatment, based on things like your PSA level and the stage of your cancer.

After a radical prostatectomy, you’ll no longer ejaculate during sex. This means you will not be able to have a child through sexual intercourse.

    Age The Younger People Survive

People above the age of 55 are very unlikely to survive prostate cancer. Only 7% of diagnosed prostrate cancer die within the first five years. Studies show that the risk of getting prostate cancer increases with age, and the speed at which cancer spreads grows exponentially too. People younger than the age of 40 rarely contract prostate cancer, and when they do, almost all of them are cured easily.

    If Treatment Does Not Work

Recovery from cancer is not always possible. If the cancer cannot be cured or controlled, the disease may be called advanced or terminal.

This diagnosis is stressful, and for many people, advanced cancer may be difficult to discuss. However, it is important to have open and honest conversations with your health care team to express your feelings, preferences, and concerns. The health care team has special skills, experience, and knowledge to support patients and their families and is there to help. Making sure a person is physically comfortable, free from pain, and emotionally supported is extremely important.

People who have advanced cancer and who are expected to live less than 6 months may want to consider hospice care. Hospice care is designed to provide the best possible quality of life for people who are near the end of life. You and your family are encouraged to talk with the health care team about hospice care options, which include hospice care at home, a special hospice center, or other health care locations. Nursing care and special equipment, including a hospital bed, can make staying at home a workable option for many families. Learn more about advanced cancer care planning.
