Prostate Health Can Affect Your Lifestyle

Everything you need to know about PROSTATE GLAND ENLARGEMENT | BPH

Many men affected by an enlarged prostate report lifestyle changes such as avoiding travel, interrupted leisure activities, and embarrassment about using urinals. Frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom can disrupt sleep for both enlarged prostate sufferers and their partners as well.

If you have an enlarged prostate, you may experience these symptoms:

  • A frequent urge to urinate, especially at night

  • An urgent need to urinate with little warning

  • Difficulty beginning urination

Bph And Erectile Dysfunction

Both BPH and ED are medical conditions that impact mens lives. Though they are separate and often distinct, these conditions do have connections. ED typically means a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. There are many factors that can worsen ED, one of those being BPH.

There are some medications that treat BPH that can bring on symptoms of ED. It is best to work with a medical professional to better understand your health needs, especially if you have on-going symptoms.

How Is Premature Ejaculation Diagnosed

The diagnosis of your condition is quite simple. For the most part, you discuss with your urologist the symptoms youre experiencing and your sexual and medical history. Your doctor may perform a physical exam to determine the status of your overall health.

Be prepared to discuss current medications as well as past medical procedures. Details like when you first experienced premature ejaculation and the circumstances surrounding can help your doctor determine the cause of your condition.

What Is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

As you get older, your body suffers some changes, one of them being the prostate enlargement. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis. It surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen out of your penis. The prostate secretes a fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. During ejaculation, the prostate squeezes this fluid into the urethra and its expelled with sperm as semen.

The enlargement of the prostate represents a natural part of ageing, but in some points, it can lead to a condition called BPH. BPH is a non-malignant disease. This means that it is not cancer and it does not cause nor lead to cancer.

Treatment Of Enlarged Prostate And Ed

While an enlarged prostate can cause ED, there are treatment options available to you to facilitate normal sexual function. Luckily many forms of enlarged prostate-associated erectile dysfunction are treatable, and by tackling the underlying problem of an enlarged prostate, many men can restore or greatly improve their sexual performance.

Flomax Ejaculatory Dysfunction: Retrograde Ejaculation

Ejaculation plays a crucial role in infertility. During ejaculation, semen moves from the seminal vesicles toward the tip of the penis. Sometimes, however, problems occur during the ejaculatory process.

Different ejaculatory dysfunctions can affect a man. Some cause the man to ejaculate too quickly, while others may result in no or only a little semen pushing toward the tip of the penis.

Flomax ejaculatory dysfunction is a common concern among men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Flomax is commonly used to treat an enlarged prostate or urinary symptoms. Sometimes, however, the drug may interfere with the normal ejaculatory process.

We take a closer look at retrograde ejaculation and Flomax ejaculatory dysfunction in this post. We consider what it means and why it happens. The post will also look at whether Flomax could be the cause behind ejaculatory dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation.

How Do Doctors Diagnose Prostate Cancer

Ok, by now, youve been screened. Your PSA score and/or your DRE have raised concerns. Whats next?

  • Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging . This useful imaging test produces different types of scans to give your doctor a fuller picture of your prostate. Your doctor can then target suspicious areas for biopsy and testing.

  • Transrectal ultrasound. Your doctor inserts a finger-sized probe into your rectum. The probe emits waves of sound that bounce off your prostate. Those waves create images, called sonograms, that help your doctor evaluate your prostate and spot abnormalities. This procedure is frequently done as part of a biopsy.

  • Biopsy. This procedure removes tissue from your prostate. Images from the multiparametric MRI are matched to images created by the ultrasound to pinpoint exact the spots that need to be tested.

Before your biopsy, your doctor will numb the area around your prostate so you dont feel pain. However, you may experience some discomfort or feel pressure during the procedure. Then, a thin, hollow needle is inserted into your prostate to remove small tissue samples. Its most often guided by an ultrasound probe thats inserted into your rectum. The whole thing takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

At the same time, certain ED treatments like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra can improve BPH and reduce those urinary symptoms.

Yes, its complicated.

To continue, specifically, Proscar, an anti-testosterone drug prescribed for BPH has been linked to ED in 3.7% of men using it, with 3.3% having diminished libido, whereas alpha-blockers like Flomax can improve the symptoms of BPH with a lower risk of sexual side effects.

Are Off Label Drugs Used For Premature Ejaculation A Good Idea

Well, thats a tricky question. Most men would say that using a prescription drug for something it wasnt intended to treat is not a great idea. Anti-depressants have been shown to have some use in treating premature ejaculation however most people would rather avoid taking an anti-depressant if theyre not actually depressed.

In addition, most of these pharmaceutical drugs come with a number of side effects some of which can be quite serious. One possible side effect of anti-depressants is erectile dysfunction or the lack of ability to achieve an erection for intercourse. This obviously makes these drugs a questionable choice for improving sexual function.

An alternative treatment for improving sexual stamina is the growing popularity of herbal premature ejaculation supplements. Among these natural premature ejaculation remedies, Prexil is one of the most popular and thats because weve created a product that works extremely well WITHOUT any negative side effects.

The Link Between An Enlarged Prostate And Erectile Dysfunction

In the past, the relationship between BPH and erectile dysfunction was believed to be based solely on age. The risk of having enlarged prostate increases with age so, does the risk of erectile dysfunction.

The link between BPH and erectile dysfunction was assessed in several clinical trials. One of the most important clinical trials was the Male Cologne Survey, including 4,489 men aged between 30 and 80. The study participants were questioned about their sexual activities and related factors. The results have shown that a high percentage of men who had lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH also had erectile dysfunction.

Another study was the Multinational Survey of the Aging Male . More than 14,000 men aged between 50 and 80 years were enrolled. The study confirmed that high prevalence of BPH associated with lower urinary tract symptoms is linked with to an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.

The relationship between BPH and erectile dysfunction was not clearly understood by the researchers. One idea concerns the sympathetic nervous system, which studies show is hyperactive in animals and men with BPH-associated urinary tract symptoms. Nerve fibres in the sympathetic nervous system transmit signals that have an impact on stress and stress-related symptoms. An increase in these signals may lead to overactivity in the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with erectile problems.

Premature Ejaculation Causes And Risk Factors

Prostate cancer: Symptoms, treatment, and causes

The cause is not really known. But your brain chemistry could be at least partly the reason. Men who have low levels of the chemical serotonin in their brains tend to take a shorter time to ejaculate.

Emotional factors can play a role:

  • Lack of confidence or poor body image

  • Concern over your sexual performance

  • Negative feelings about the idea of sex

Some physical conditions may also cause PE, including:

  • Unusual hormone levels

  • Irregular levels of neurotransmitters

  • Inflammation or an infection in your prostate or urethra

  • Genetic traits you inherit from your parents

Sometimes PE can be a problem for men with erectile dysfunction . Thatâs when the penis doesnât remain firm enough for sex. Men who are worried they could lose their erection may develop a pattern of rushing to ejaculate. It can be a hard habit to break.

Treating the erectile dysfunction may make the premature ejaculation go away. There are many medication options.

What Is Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is when you have an orgasm before intercourse or less than a minute after you start. There is no set time when a man should ejaculate during sex, but if you ejaculate and lose your erection this soon, you and your partner may feel thereâs not enough time to enjoy it.

It can be frustrating and even embarrassing, but itâs a common issue for men. Between 30% to 40% have it at some time in their life. So, keep in mind — itâs not something to worry about if it happens only occasionally.

How Is Impotence/sexual Dysfunction Evaluated

The urologist will need to obtain a complete history of the patient’s problem and information about previous operations, illnesses, injuries, and medications. It is important to understand the patient’s development and social history. There may be some aspects of a person’s life that would be affecting their impotence/sexual dysfunction. The physical examination of the penis and scrotal area may help find physical underlying problems. In some cases, blood tests, ultrasounds, and x-rays may be ordered.

Treatments are available that can help delay ejaculation. If you see a urologist for this type of sexual dysfunction, he or she will try to determine the cause in order to settle on the right treatment approach. Here is a look at some of the common causes ofand risk factors forpremature ejaculation.

Psychological Factors

Psychological factors can play a central role in persistent premature ejaculation. In some cases, men who have experienced premature ejaculation in the past and worry about it happening again can actually increase the risk of it occurring because of their anxiety. Other psychological factors can also play a role, including:

  • Relationship problems

The Impact Of An Enlarged Prostate On Erectile Dysfunction

Enlarged Prostate Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur)

It is easy to see a symptom while misunderstanding the underlying cause.

Erectile dysfunction is a common medical condition that impacts more than a third of men at some point in their lives. As men get older, they tend to struggle more commonly with erectile dysfunction . There are many other health issues for men as they get older. Some of these health risks may have an impact on their ED as well.

One common area with troubling conditions for aging men is their prostate. Their prostates can be a source of cancer, but even when they are cancer-free, they may have an enlarged prostate called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia . In this article, we will focus on how BPH impacts mens health and how that may contribute to erectile dysfunction.

Health Issues In Men: Part I Common Genitourinary Disorders

TED D. EPPERLY, COL, MC, USA, and KEVIN E. MOORE, CPT, MC, USA, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia

Am Fam Physician. 2000 Jun 15 61:3657-3664.

This is part I of a two-part article on health issues in men. Part II, Common Psychosocial Disorders, will appear in the next issue.

Common genitourinary health issues that arise in the care of male patients include prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urogenital cancers, premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. Bacterial infections are responsible for only 5 to 10 percent of prostatitis cases. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is present in 90 percent of men by the age of 85. Common urogenital cancers include prostate cancer, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and testicular cancer. Although an estimated 10 percent of men eventually develop prostate cancer, screening for this malignancy is one of the most controversial areas of health prevention. Premature ejaculation occurs in as many as 40 percent of men. Treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, counseling or behavioral therapy may be helpful. Erectile dysfunction affects up to 30 percent of men between 40 and 70 years of age. Stepped therapy is a useful approach to this common malady. Good treatment results have been obtained with orally administered sildenafil and intraurethrally administered alprostadil.

Does An Enlarged Prostate Affect A Man Sexually

The quick and easy answer is that an enlarged prostate can definitely impact men and their sexual health. If that’s all you were looking for, you can go on with your day, but the ways in which an enlarged prostate can affect a man’s sexual health is quite interesting and worth a read.

The prostate is a uniquely male structure in the human body that works in a unique way. Because the urethra is dual purpose and is the common pathway for semen and urine, the prostate acts as the traffic controller, ensuring that both are routed correctly and do not occur simultaneously. Additionally, the prostate is a crucial component in the creation of seminal fluid.

To fully answer the question as to how an enlarged prostate can impact a man sexually, it is important to compare the different dimensions surrounding sexual health and how an enlarged prostate affects these components of sexual functioning. Below is a deeper look into an enlarged prostate and its effect on male sexual health.

What Are The Risk Factors For Bph

Risk factors for prostate gland enlargement include:

Ageing

The prevalence of BPH rises markedly with age. Prostate gland enlargement rarely causes signs and symptoms in men younger than age 40. About one-third of men experience moderate to severe symptoms by age 60 and about half do so by age 80.

Family history

BPH can run in families. Studies have pointed to a variety of genes that may have a role in the development of prostate enlargement.

Ethnic background

BPH can affect men of all ethnic backgrounds. The incidence is higher among African-Americans than in Caucasians, which in turn exceeds that in Asian men.

Diabetes

Studies suggest that diabetes has an important role in the development of BPH. Prostate enlargement can be triggered by high levels of insulin.

The hormone insulin normally moves sugar from foods out of the bloodstream to be used for energy or stored in cells. In people with type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond as well to insulin. Insulin levels are high but ineffective. The pancreas pumps out more insulin to bring down blood sugar. The excess of insulin stimulates the liver to produce more quantities of insulin-like growth factor. This factor is believed to trigger prostate growth.

Diet

There are some indications that both macronutrients and micronutrients may affect the risk of BPH.

Consumption of red meat, fat, milk and dairy products, cereals, bread, poultry and starch potentially increase the risks of BPH.

Lack of physical activity

Obesity

Types Of Ejaculatory Dysfunctions

Ejaculatory dysfunction is a term that can refer to different conditions affecting the male reproductive system. Studies show that ejaculatory dysfunctions are relatively common among men. These conditions can affect young and older men.

One study found that premature ejaculation is the most common type of ejaculatory dysfunction. This condition causes a man to ejaculate quickly after initiating sexual activity. Premature ejaculation means both the man and his sexual partner will not feel satisfied at the time of orgasm. There is no specific time to ejaculation used to diagnose this condition, although most men report ejaculation within one minute. Studies show that up to 40% of men may experience premature ejaculation.

Apart from premature ejaculation, there are two other common types of ejaculatory dysfunctions. This includes delayed and retrograde ejaculation.

Delayed ejaculation means it takes longer than usual for a man to ejaculate.
