Erectile dysfunction, defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to facilitate intercourse,;is one of the most common problems that men face all over the world. This particular problem is not pleasant and it is quite psychologically troublesome for all men.

In some cases, erectile dysfunction is temporary, often a sign of extraordinary stress, and will resolve on its own spontaneously. In other cases, it is a long-term problem, which can also result from underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple sclerosis.;

Because erectile dysfunction can have a large negative impact on a man’s quality of life,;experts are looking for various ways to solve this problem and help men have proper sexual intercourse once again. Nowadays, there are a lot of medications that will help men treat the problem of erectile dysfunction.

Viagra is the best known medication for erectile dysfunction. Apart from medications, there are also a lot of natural remedies that help in getting rid of erectile dysfunction. Ginger root is thought to be one such remedy. However, people should first get to know as much as they can about the ginger root.

Whole Ginger Extract Has Promising Anti

In a first of its kind study, assessing anti-cancer properties of ginger as a whole instead of the plants individual components, scientists at Georgia State University have discovered, that whole ginger extract has promising cancer-preventing activity in prostate cancer.

According to an online article in FirstView published in the British Journal of Nutrition, Associate professor of Biology, Ritu Aneja discovered in her lab, that ginger extract had significant effects in stopping the growth of cancer cells, as well as in inducing cell death in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells.

In addition, animal studies revealed that the extract did not show significant toxicity to normal tissues, such as bone marrow. Research revealed very good tumor regression by up to 60 percent, and no toxicity whatsoever.

Despite much research having been performed on anti-cancer properties in ginger, Anejas lab prefers to take a more holistic approach to investigate the types of molecules involved. She does not believe individual compounds are solely responsible for the extracts anti-cancer properties and considers it to be a synergistic interplay of components, enabling scientists to use much smaller amounts of extract to benefit from its properties instead of using a single chemical.

Data evaluation shows that humans would have to consume only about 3½ ounces of whole ginger extract in their daily diet to achieve the beneficial effects.

Questions And Answers About Green Tea

  • What is green tea?

Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. The way tea leaves are processed determines whether green tea, black tea, or oolong tea is made. Green tea leaves are steamed and dried.

The health benefits studied in green tea are thought to be from compounds called polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of plant chemicals that include catechins . Catechins make up most of the polyphenols in green tea.

Catechins in green tea can vary widely, depending on the source of the tea leaves and the way they are processed. This makes it hard to identify most of the chemical factors linked to the health benefits of green tea.

Some studies suggest that green tea may protect against heart and blood vessel disease.

  • How is green tea given or taken?

People usually drink green tea or take it as a dietary supplement.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using green tea?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using green tea.

  • Overall, population studies suggest that green tea may help protect against prostate cancer in Asian populations. Prostate cancer deaths in Asia are among the lowest in the world.

    Questions And Answers About Calcium

  • What is calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is needed for basic blood vessel, muscle, and nerve functioning, for sending signals from cell to cell, and for releasing hormones. It is the most common mineral in the body. The body stores calcium mainly in bone tissue.

  • How is calcium given or taken?

The main sources of calcium are in foods and dietary supplements. About one-third of dietary calcium comes from milk and milk products like cheese and yogurt. Vegetable sources include Chinese cabbage, kale, and broccoli. Foods may have calcium added, such as fruit juices and drinks, tofu, and cereals.

Most research about calcium and prostate cancer risk has studied calcium in the diet and not calcium in supplements.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using calcium?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using calcium.

In Vitro Proliferation And Colony Survival Assay

This Is What Makes Ginger The Anti

Cells were plated in ninety-six-well plates and treated with gradient concentrations of GE the next day. After 72 h of incubation, cell proliferation was determined using the Alamar blue cell proliferation assay. The magnitude of the fluorescent signal is proportional to the number of live cells, and is monitored using 530560 nm excitation wavelength and 590 nm emission wavelength. For the colony assay, PC-3 cells were treated with 250 g/ml of GE for 48 h, washed and replaced with regular RPMI medium. After 10 d, colonies were fixed with 4 % formaldehyde, stained with crystal violet and counted.

Latest Cure For Prostate Cancer Ginger Kills Prostate Cancer Cells

The British Journal of Nutrition published the results of an American study that says ginger extract inhibits prostate cancer cell growth.

The use of ginger extract in a daily dose of 100 mg per kilogram of body weight reduced the growth of prostate tumors by 56%. Researchers also estimated that when consuming 100 grams of fresh ginger, 70 kg is a person daily. Weighing will get the same results.

The study showed that ginger used as a medicine for the treatment of cancer, unlike other methods does not affect other rapidly multiplying necessary cells in the body,

Such as bone or stomach cells , since the substances contained in ginger have selective toxicity, acting only on cancer cells. None of the drugs used today has such properties.

So far, scientists cannot explain at all such truly magical molecular mechanisms of ginger action, but the results speak for themselves, and this fact is very encouraging for scientists.

Moreover, it is known that the main problem of the current cancer treatment system is that the cells of most types of cancer are able to adapt to any type of chemical therapy almost instantly and stop responding, that is, they continue to develop further, which does not happen when treatment with ginger extract.

    Cancer Cure Scientific Research

Researchers have proven that 6-shagaol, contained in ginger, acts on the stem cells of breast cancer in many different ways.

It alters the cell cycle and inhibits the expression of surface cell markers; suppresses the process of tumor formation by increasing the rate of cell necrosis; directly affects cell apoptosis , and also directly poisons stem cancer cells .

Moreover, the study studied simultaneously the cytotoxicity of 6-shagaol and the chemotherapy drug taxol, which is widely used in the modern practice of treating breast cancer.

In the course of the research, a cure for cancer was revealed :Taxol did indeed show cytotoxicity in a one-dimensional laboratory model of cancer , but had no effect on the three-dimensional model.

Now considered the most accurate model of real cancer tumors, and 6-shagaol was more effective in all models, various types of cancerous tumors, both with a monolayer and with spheroidal models.

And even increasing the concentration of Taxol by 10,000 times, we got zero efficiencies on a spheroidal model of a cancer tumor. The drug Taxol, although it was quite active in the cells of the monolayer, did not show any activity against spheroids even at a concentration 10,000 times higher than the concentration of 6-shagaol, the scientists write in their conclusions.

And yet, scientists, not wanting to reassure people in advance .

But some of them are much bolder in their statements: All the above research data give reason to assume that safely

    Ginger Extract Arrests Cell

Several dietary agents have been shown to arrest the cell cycle, leading to growth inhibition and apoptosis. For example, grape seed proanthocyanidins, green tea polyphenols, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, resveratrol , silymarin/silibinin , genistein , curcumin and ginger affect cell-cycle progression at various stages by specifically modulating cell-cycle-associated proteins. Specific gingerols, such as 6-gingerol and 8-gingerol, have been shown to perturb cell-cycle progression as a chemopreventive strategy. Thus, our next aim was to gain mechanistic insights into GE-mediated antiproliferative activity by determining the specific cell-cycle stage at which GE intervenes. To this end, we examined the cell-cycle distribution profile of GE-treated PC-3 cells by employing a flow cytometric assay using the DNA intercalator dye, propidium iodide. shows the effect of varying GE dose levels on cell-cycle progression of PC-3 cells at 24 h of treatment in a three-dimensional disposition. As shown in , exposure of PC-3 cultures consistently resulted in a statistically significant dose-dependent enrichment of the sub-G1 fraction, suggesting considerable apoptotic cell death. The sub-G1 population increased from approximately 6 % at 100 g/ml to approximately 99 % at 1000 g/ml. bar-graphically depicts the percentages of G1, S, G2/M and sub-G1 phase populations in PC-3 cells upon treatment with varying GE doses .

    The Bioactive Phytochemicals In Ginger

As a food, ginger is a good source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamins A and C as well as phosphorus and potassium. However, ginger is more prized for its medicinal uses than its nutritional benefits.

There are 3 major classes of active phytochemicals in ginger. These include zingerone, shogaols, and gingerols; and they are all volatile oils.

Zingerone contributes a little to the aroma of ginger and it is used as a spicy aroma in the perfumery industry. However, fresh ginger contains no zingerone. Instead, the compound is made from gingerols during cooking.

Zingerone has an antibacterial property and is believed to be responsible for the efficacy of ginger in the treatment of bacteria-induced diarrhea.

The shogaols are also formed from gingerols due to dehydration during the storage of fresh ginger. Like gingerols, shogaols are also responsible for the pungent aroma of ginger.

Gingerols are the primary phytochemicals in fresh ginger. They are not as pungent as shogaol and but are responsible for most of the therapeutic benefits of ginger.

Gingerol is the ginger phytochemical responsible for relieving nausea and migraine. It has also been shown to be useful in the treatment of arthritic pain and for reducing high body temperature during high fevers.

Also, gingerol is currently a drug candidate in different cancer studies and early results have been positive.

    How Turmeric May Work

The popular herbal medicine contains the antioxidant curcumin, a curcuminoid that is responsible for turmerics yellow color and prevents inflammation by blocking molecules that cause it. Although the medicinal use of turmeric is not fully understood, the spice is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a variety of illnesses.

    Curcumin, the primary active ingredient in turmeric, protects the body in two ways:;

    • Enhancing the activity of an important detoxifying enzyme
    • Neutralizing molecules that cause DNA damage, such as free radicals

    Studies of turmeric in rats have shown the spice to be vital in the prevention of kidney damage from toxins. Additional studies have shown that it may also have protective effects against colon, stomach, and skin cancer by stopping the replication of tumor cells in the lab. The effect in the human body is still being studied.;

Although research on turmeric as an anti-cancer supplement has been promising, especially in preventing and limiting the spread of prostate cancer, recent experiments suggest that it may interfere with the activity of some chemotherapy drugs.

Therefore, questions remain about its overall efficacy and clinical relevance as an adjunct to traditional cancer treatments.

Comparison Of The Effects Of 6

Because ginger contains several biologically active components, we compared the effects of 6-SHO with those of 6-GIN and 6-PAR in both human and mouse prostate cancer cell lines. As shown in , both 6-GIN and 6-PAR reduced the survival of human and mouse prostate cancer cells. However, each of these compounds was less active on a molar basis than 6-SHO. For example, approximately 4-fold higher concentrations of both 6-GIN and 6-PAR were required to produce equivalent reductions in cell survival as compared with what was seen for 40 mol/L 6-SHO in both the human and mouse prostate cancer cell lines. Western blot analyses with 6-GIN and 6-PAR provided confirmation that pSTAT3Tyr705 was reduced by both compounds at a concentration of 100 mol/L in both LNCaP and DU145 cells. Both 6-GIN and 6-PAR decreased the level of survivin and increased the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p21 and p27 in all three human prostate cancer cells, at the 100 mol/L concentration . TNF-induced phosphorylation of NF-Bp65 and IB was also reduced by 6-GIN and 6-PAR in both DU145 and PC-3 cells at the 100 mol/L concentration . 6-PAR also decreased the phosphorylation of STAT3, NF-Bp65, and the level of survivin in HMVP2 cells . Collectively, these results demonstrate that 6-GIN and 6-PAR have the ability to block growth and reduce survival of both human and mouse prostate cancer cells but that they are both less potent than 6-SHO.

    May Benefit Cognitive Health

    Why Ginger Can Treat Cancer

Ginger is such a promising treatment for cancer due the fact that it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and also appears to be able to prevent a cancerous tumor from growing or spreading. This is due to its ability to interrupt the reproductive cycle of cancer cells. It also appears to be able to induce cancer cell suicide, also called apotosis. What is most important, however, is that it seems to be able to do this without being toxic to other kinds of rapidly-reproducing cells such as though in the digestive tract. Chemo especially is very harmful to these kinds of cells, leading to problems with nausea, vomiting, mouth sores and other highly undesirable side effects. In addition to this, men taking ginger supplements can receive other health benefits as well, including improvement in blood pressure, arthritis and high cholesterol, just to name a few.

In conclusion, men who are worried about prostate health but are seeking a natural solution for it would do well to consider regular ginger supplementation. This, combined with avoidance of a diet high in sugar and processed foods, can make an enormous difference in prostate health, particularly as a man ages.
