Masturbation Can Help Make Your Pelvic Floor Stronger
Yup, jacking off can really get youor more specifically, your pelvic floorjacked. “An orgasm creates a series of muscle contractions in the pelvic floor,” Holly Richmond, Ph.D., LMFT, somatic psychologist, certified sex therapist, and K-Y partner, tells mbg. “So essentially, orgasming is like a mini workout for your pelvic floor,” she says.
This diamond-shaped group of internal muscles work together to support our pelvic organs, including the vagina, uterus, bladder, and bowels. If the pelvic floor muscles are weak, these organs can literally fall out of place, known as prolapse. Weak pelvic floor muscles are also associated with urinary and bowel incontinence , lower back and pelvic floor pain, discomfort during penetrative sex for vulva owners, and constipation. Masturbating won’t heal these things, but it’s a great way to help prevent pelvic floor weakness.
Masturbation Can Make You Happier
“Masturbating in and of itselfwith or without an orgasmcan make you happier,” says Richmond. Seriously. “Masturbating activates the parts of the brain responsible for pleasure like the hypothalamus and thalamus, while also decreasing the parts of the brain responsible for fear and anxiety like the lateral orbitofrontal cortex.”
If you have an orgasm, one 2016 study says masturbation can lead to an increased concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine and oxytocin, which have been linked and again to increased happiness and mood regulation. So, if you find yourself smiling more after ramping up your solo sex life, don’t be alarmed. It’s the wanking talking.
Health Benefits Of Masturbation
A lot of the evidence for the benefits of masturbation for both men and women is linked more to orgasm than masturbation, says Nicole Prause, a neuroscientist studying sexual behavior and physiology and the founder of the sexual biotechnology company .
When you orgasm, your body releases a flood of hormones, including:
- , which are known to reduce pain
- , which helps regulate stress, pain, fear, and well-being
- , which reduces stress and helps balance mood
As a result, masturbation that results in orgasm can come with numerous health benefits, such as:
- increased relaxation
There’s also some evidence to suggest that masturbation may strengthen the immune system.
Masturbation can also be more enjoyable than engaging in sexual acts with a partner because it eases any sort of pressure.
“For a lot of people, when they’re masturbating, especially solo, there’s a relaxation component to it,” says Susan Milstein, a certified sexuality educator and professor of health and kinesiology at Texas A&M University. “They don’t feel the need to perform when they are just there for themselves.”
If you’re trying to abstain from sex or are worried about the risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections , masturbation is also great.
“It really is one of the safest forms of sex out there, as long as you’re not sharing toys and cleaning in between,” Milstein says.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases And Infections
While masturbation is generally safer when it comes to spreading sexually transmitted infection, there is still a risk. When sharing toys, opt for hard nonporous materials to make cleaning easy. If your toy is porous, like a jelly dildo, Milstein says to use a condom, and then after each use throw the condom out and clean the toy.
Pain During Erection Or Ejaculation
Some men find that erections and ejaculating is painful after surgery, or during and after their course of radiotherapy.
Painful erections following surgery could be due to internal bruising caused by the operation. The tube which carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body gets inflamed by the radiotherapy treatment.
This side effect should disappear a few weeks after you finish radiotherapy or as you recover from surgery. Talk to your specialist nurse for specific advice. If masturbation and sex is important to you, its important to keep stimulating the penis to keep it healthy. On the other hand, if erections are very painful, you might need to avoid ejaculation for a while and try again later.
The penile injections to stimulate an erection can cause painful erections in some men. This pain might lessen with continued treatment.
Masturbation And Prostate Cancer Risk
Masturbation Frequency Linked to Prostate Risk in 20s, Protection in 50s
Jan. 27, 2009 — Frequent in young men is linked to higher risk of early prostate cancer, but it lowers prostate cancer risk for men in their 50s, a study shows.
High levels of male sex hormones, or androgens, may increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer. But different studies of this question, done in different ways, have reached different conclusions.
To look at the question in a new way, a team of researchers at England’s University of Nottingham looked at whether men with more intense drives were at higher risk of prostate cancer.
Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, PhD; Rosalind Eeles, PhD, FRCP; and Kenneth R. Muir, PhD, obtained detailed sexual histories from 840 men. About half the men got prostate cancer by age 60, and about half did not have cancer.
The findings were surprising. Sexual intercourse did not affect prostate risk. But frequent masturbation did — in different ways, at different times of life.
“Frequent masturbation during men’s 20s and 30s increased their risk of prostate ,” Dimitropoulou tells WebMD. “But men in their 50s who masturbated frequently had decreased risk.”
Of course, masturbation frequency is relative.
For men in their 20s, “frequent masturbation” was two to seven times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported masturbating less than once per month, 20-something frequent masturbators had a 79% higher risk of prostate cancer by age 60.
You May Feel More Confident
“Masturbating is essential for developing self-awareness, body-awareness, self-acceptance, and confidence,” Richmond says. Obviously, this translates in the bedroom. But she says, “In my practice, I’ve seen this confidence carry over outside the bedroom, too.”
Costa agrees, adding, “I’ve seen a regular masturbation practice give someone the confidence they never had before to ask for a raise, ask someone out, and more.”
Yes, masturbating is very powerful indeed.
Masturbating May Protect Against Prostate Cancer
It will make you go blind. It will make your palms grow hairy. Such myths about masturbation are largely a thing of the past. But the latest research has even better news for young men: frequent self-pleasuring could protect against the most common kind of cancer.
A team in Australia led by Graham Giles of The Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne asked 1079 men with prostate cancer to fill in a questionnaire detailing their sexual habits, and compared their responses with those of 1259 healthy men of the same age. The team concludes that the more men ejaculate between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely they are to develop prostate cancer.
The protective effect is greatest while men are in their twenties: those who had ejaculated more than five times per week in their twenties, for instance, were one-third less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer later in life .
The results contradict those of previous studies, which have suggested that having had many sexual partners, or a high frequency of sexual activity, increases the risk of prostate cancer by up to 40 per cent. The key difference is that these earlier studies defined sexual activity as sexual intercourse, whereas the latest study focused on the number of ejaculations, whether or not intercourse was involved.
The prostate produces part of the fluid that makes up semen
It Can Improve Your Skin
Orgasm causes increased blood flow to the skin, which makes your blood vessels open up; for some people, this can result in slightly rosy cheeks, or what’s better known as the post-sex glow. What’s even better? The oxytocin that’s released with orgasm can reduce inflammation, making zits and rashes less noticeable.
It Can Help You Fall Asleep
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep, from losing weight to eating certain kinds of food . Masturbation can also help: having an orgasm releases like prolactin, serotonin, and oxytocin into the brain, all of which have been linked to feelings of happiness and relaxation. So if you find that you’re tossing and turning at night, paying a lil’ visit to Pornhub might be worth a shot.
What Is Your Prostate And What Does It Do
Your prostate is a small gland that lives inside your body, just below your bladder. It sits around the urethra, which is the tube that carries pee from your bladder through your penis. Only men have a prostate.
Your prostate produces some of the fluids contained in your semen, the liquid that transports sperm. This liquid contains special enzymes and hormones that help your sperm cells function properly, which means the prostate plays a key part in your fertility. The muscles in your prostate also help push semen through your urethra when you ejaculate.
Does Sexual Activity Improve Prostate Health
Regular ejaculation enhances the immune systems response to the presence of cancer cells.
According to a report published in , men who reported having more than 20 ejaculations per month were 33% less likely to develop prostate cancer.
These measured ejaculations included sexual intercourse, nocturnal emissions, and masturbation. Researchers evaluated nearly 30,000 patients, of whom 1,449 developed prostate cancer.
Assuming the men answered the survey questions honestly, the results indicated that active sex life is not associated with higher cancer risk in most men.
An Australian study of 2,338 men also came to a similar conclusion. This study found that men who averaged 4.6 to seven ejaculations a week were 36% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 compared to men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week on average.
The study found no connection between prostate cancer and the number of sex partners.
Prostate Specific Antigen Testing
Prostate Specific Antigen is a protein made by the cells in your prostate. Your PSA levels can be measured using a blood test and give an indication of your prostate health.
A PSA test isnt a test for cancer. Higher levels of PSA might indicate prostate cancer, but a high reading could also be caused by other conditions. It is also possible to have low level readings and have prostate cancer. This means that a PSA test isnt enough to definitively diagnose or rule out prostate cancer. Your PSA levels can vary, so your doctor might run this test a few times to compare your results and help determine your risk of prostate cancer.
Masturbating Can Help Improve Your Skin
We’ve all heard about the post-orgasm glow. The beauty benefits of sex are real, and they also apply to masturbating. But the skin-boosting benefits go beyond the sex flush: One study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found having an orgasm increases your body’s estrogen levels, which are known to help with healthier-looking skin .
“Masturbating reduces stress levels, which can reduce some of the body’s stress such as the overproduction of sweat and acne,” Pai adds. “So a regular masturbation practice really can make someone’s skin look clearer.” And hey, a visit with your vibe is a whole lot more fun than a visit to the dermatologist.
Masturbating Helps Relieve Stress
During your last pleasurable sexual experience you probably weren’t thinking about your never-ending to-do list or upcoming presentation. “Sexual pleasure forces us to tune into our body’s reactions to pleasure, rather than staying in our head where it’s easy to be preoccupied and stressed,” says Richmond. And masturbating definitely counts as sexual pleasure.
If the solo session includes an orgasm, there’s additional stress-busting benefits. One study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicinefound that orgasming releases oxytocin, which Pai says results in decreased levels of cortisol in the body. And when cortisol levels are decreased, so are feelings of stress.
What Is The Prostate
Unfortunately, we rarely hear about the prostate outside of the context of cancer. Yet, it is an extremely important gland for your health and sexual function.
The prostate sits just beneath your bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder and semen to the penis. This glands main job is to produce the fluid that makes semen by mixing with sperm from your testicles. The prostate regulates the viscosity of your semen too, by adding a protein that makes it more watery.
You might know that testosterone plays a role in maintaining your prostates health. Alongside regulating your sex drive and your muscle mass, testosterone is often used to treat prostate cancer too.
It Lowers Your Chance Of Developing Prostate Cancer
Studies have found a correlation between prostate health and ejaculation. The more times you ejaculate during the month the lower your chance of developing prostate cancer.
Anything you can do to reduce your risk of developing cancer is beneficial to your health. While ejaculation can occur while having sex with a partner, you dont need a partner to ejaculate more.
Masturbation is a great method for those who dont have a partner or for those who are in the mood when their partners not around.
It Can Help Lower Your Prostate Cancer Risk
A 2004 study found that men who ejaculated more than 21 times a month reduced their risk of prostate cancer by roughly 33 percent, compared to guys who only did the deed four to seven times a month. In 2016, researchers followed up with that same group of guys from 2004 and found that those who ejaculated 8 to 12 times per month reduced their prostate cancer risk by 10 percent.
Can You Prevent Prostate Cancer
Because experts cant definitively say what causes prostate cancer, they havent issued recommendations on how to prevent it. But according to Harvard Medical School , quitting smoking and eating a heart-healthy diet focused on fish, poultry, plant-based protein, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and salads may reduce your risk. Getting regular exercise and using 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors have been shown by some studies to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
It Improves Heart Health
Contrary to popular belief that rigorous sex can up your risk of a heart attack or stroke, regular orgasms can actually help protect you against cardiovascular disease. A report from the Massachusetts Aging Study found that men who had sex once a month or less were 45% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than men who had two or more orgasms per week. So if you cancel plans with friends to stay home and M-bate, just tell them it’s for your own health. Hey, you won’t be lying.
Prostate Milking Vs Male Orgasm
Many people experience an orgasm from prostate milking, especially if they masturbate during it.
A person may not be able to distinguish between prostate fluid and ejaculated semen. Prostate fluid is one component of semen. When a male has an orgasm and ejaculates, , prostate fluid, and other fluids present in the ejaculate.
Not all men or have an orgasm during prostate milking. Masturbation and other forms of sexual contact make an ejaculation during the massage more likely.
Use A Vibrator For Your Penis
Vibrators have traditionally been marketed to people with a vulva, which makes sense, given that most need some form of external clitoral stimulation in order to climax during penetrative sex. But , because honestly, those vibrations can feel really damn good on penises, too! One 2012 study found that 44% of heterosexual men had enjoyed the experience of using a vibrator at some point in their life, so don’t be shy about trying some of these toys.
Other Causes Of Prostate Cancer
While masturbation and testosterone levels may affect your chances, there are other factors that we know for sure play a role. For example, as with all cancers, older men are much more likely to develop prostate cancer than younger men.
Your genetics are one of the most important risk factors for prostate cancer too. If you have people in your family that have developed prostate cancer, you are more likely to develop it yourself. Interestingly, if people in your family have had breast cancer, prostate cancer is increased too.
Obesity is another risk factor that deserves a mention. One study found that men with obesity were 20% more likely to develop prostate cancer than lean men, whilst those severely obese were 34% more likely. Unfortunately, however, obese men are more likely to develop particularly aggressive forms of prostate cancer too.
What Is The Evidence
Much of the public conversation surrounding this potential link came from a massive study conducted by researchers at Harvard University. Published in 2004, the study followed 29,342 men aged between 46 and 81 over an eight-year period. They were required to provide details on the historical frequency of their ejaculations and were given follow-up questionnaires every two years.
Specifically, they were asked the average number of times per month that they ejaculated during their twenties, their forties, and in the last year. Whilst the researchers were actually testing the hypothesis that frequent masturbation increases the risk of prostate cancer, the results suggested that the opposite was true.
Compared to those who only masturbated 4-7 times a month in their twenties, those who masturbated 21 times monthly showed a 31% decrease in their risk of developing prostate cancer in their later life. Masturbating a lot seemed to make prostate cancer a third less likely.
These results seemed to be corroborated by another study too. Investigating just over 2,000 men, this Australian study looked at the frequency of ejaculation between their twenties and forties. It found that men who ejaculated an average of 4.6 to 7 times a week had a 36% reduced chance of contracting prostate cancer before the age of 70 than those who only did it twice a week.

A Change Of Consensus
Previously, it was thought that regular sexual activity plays a role in the development of prostate cancer.
However, an published in BMJ also claims that frequent ejaculation may be linked to a decreased risk of prostate cancer.
Experts from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, examined the association between ejaculation frequency and the risk of prostate cancer.
The research used historical data from various studies involving over 50,000 subjects aged 40 to 75 years from 1986.
These men responded to a series of questionnaires about their health history and known or suspected risk factors for cancer and other chronic illnesses.
Part of the questionnaire included questions about their sexual activities and the frequency of ejaculations.
Among the participants, there were only 1,449 cases of prostate cancer, and only a small percentage of the cases were seen in men who frequently ejaculate during their 40s and 50s. The researchers concluded that frequent ejaculation leads to a decreased risk of prostate cancer.
Renowned urologist Aaron Spitz also supports the association between masturbation and a decreased risk of prostate cancer in older men.
He claims that frequent masturbation for a guy in his later years has a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer.
Is Sex Good For Your Prostate
Whether or not sex is good for prostate problems is a question many men wonder, and its an important one that needs answering.
The plays an active role during sexual activity.
Along with other structures, the prostate is responsible for making fluid in semen, which helps transport your sperm when you ejaculate.
The effect regular ejaculations have on the prostate should become a significant talking point, especially amongst men who are experiencing prostate problems.
This article will determine whether a healthy sex life can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Study 4 Ejaculation Frequency And Risk Of Prostate Cancer: Updated Results With An Additional Decade Of Follow
An 18-year Harvard study determined that the risk of prostate cancer was reduced by 20% for men who ejaculated 21 times a month, compared to men who ejaculated four to 7 times a month.
The study included 31,925 men who answered questions on ejaculation frequency on a 1992 questionnaire and followed through to 2010.
The average monthly ejaculation frequency was assessed at three time- points: age 20-29 yrs., age 40-49 yrs., and the year before questionnaire distribution.
As a result of the mass of data collected, this is one of the more promising studies.
However, there were several limitations, one being that the study relied on men to accurately report how often they ejaculated and the other being that the study included mostly white men.
Research has shown that African American have a higher risk of prostate cancer , so it is possible the more diverse population may have affected the results of the study.
It Can Reduce Your Risk Of A Cervical Infection
If youre a person with a vagina, youll be happy to hear that masturbation can reduce your chances of developing cervical infections and UTIs. UTIs are common for female bodies so its great to hear that a few extra orgasms achieved through masturbation can reduce your chances of infection.
This happens because masturbating allows your body to get rid of toxins and bacteria. For female bodies, the cervical fluids that flush out of the body during masturbation help remove the bacteria that cause infections. This is just one of the many positive effects of masturbation.
