Whats The Verdict On Fish Oil
The fish oil benefits for men and women far outweigh the risks, especially for middle-aged and older people who follow the recommendations by the FDA, AHA, and EPA.
Make fish oil your friend by:
- Choosing more from food sources than supplements.
- Following AHAs recommendation of eating one to two servings of non-fried fish every week.
- Eating a variety of fish higher in EPA and DHA and lower in methylmercury to minimize potentially adverse effects due to environmental pollutants.
- Consuming fish along with other vital aspects of a healthy diet, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and whole grains that ensure balanced omega.
- Getting your doctors approval and prescribed fish oil supplement and following their instructions.
- Following the AHAs recommendations of consuming no more than 3 grams of fish oil supplement daily, as taking more can cause bleeding.
- Taking your fish oil supplements into two doses in the morning and night to decrease side effects.
- Taking fish oil supplements with food to increase absorption and decrease side effects.
- Freezing and consuming them to decrease side effects.
- Following the US federal governments 20202025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendations of seafood for pregnant and nursing women. Safe fish options for pregnant and nursing women include sardines, trout, salmon, herring, and anchovies because of higher EPA and DHA and lower mercury.

This is attributed to the fact that this diet is focused on whole foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans while also focusing on healthy unsaturated fats from plants. With this style of eating, theres also an emphasis on decreasing processed or refined foods along with lowering intake of red meat or processed red meats. It allows alcohol in moderation and its focus on whole foods supports adequate fiber intake. It also allows for a wide range of foods, which means its more of a lifestyle rather than just a fad diet.

Prostate Cancer By Clinical Characteristics
High-grade prostate cancer
The only case-control study to report RR estimates based on tumor grade reported fish consumption to have an insignificant positive association with high-grade prostate cancer . A cohort study by Park et al also showed no association of high fish consumption with high-grade prostate cancer , although the study treated high-grade and high-stage cancer as a single outcome.
High-stage prostate cancer
Of all studies reviewed, only the cohort study by Augustsson et al presented RR estimates strictly for high stage disease without combining it with high-grade or fatal disease. Augustsson et al showed fish consumption to have a significant risk reduction of 44% for metastatic disease but no significant protective association with locally advanced prostate cancer . With the use of any definition of advanced prostate cancer, pooled results of 3 cohort studies did not indicate that fish consumption had a significant protective association with high-stage disease . The pooled finding must be interpreted with caution because the 3 studies measured slightly different outcomes. Another cohort study that modeled fish consumption as a continuous variable showed fish consumption of 25 g fish/wk to be unassociated with high-stage disease .

Symptoms Of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia
Men often joke with one another that the prostate may be the size of a walnut, but it hurts as much as hit with a stone. It is the burning sensation and the excruciating pain that is among the first symptoms of having an enlarged prostate gland. One of the early symptoms is the frequent going to the toilet at night and overall difficulty in urination. You can try to mitigate the negative impact by making healthy and nutritional combinations of different foods. The are many natural herbs which affect the prostate in a positive way. Regular home body detox is also recommended, as well as metabolism-boosting practices.
Urologists have determined that approximately 50% of men over the age of 60 suffer from this problem. The exact reasons for its occurrence are still unknown. One theory is that the gland does not stop growing throughout the entire life. It begins to gradually press against and squeeze the urethra, making going to the toilet a difficult job. A serious distinction must be made between prostate cancer and BPH. The two diseases are treated differently. A visit to the doctor is required to determine the exact diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
Baseline Psa Higher In Those Who Contracted Prostate Cancer
Prostate specific antigen is a blood marker of prostate disease.
Standard laboratory reference ranges often allow PSA to reach 4.0 ng/mL before flagging a potential problem. A more progressive view of the PSA is that any number over 2.4 ng/mL should be viewed with suspicion, with a digital rectal exam performed and a follow-up PSA blood test done in three months.
Life Extension has published comprehensive articles about how to properly interpret PSA results, but to state it succinctly: Aging men with PSA readings greater than 2.4 ng/mL are at higher risk for developing clinically relevant prostate cancer and should initiate aggressive steps to reverse the underlying process.
In the report that associated higher omega-3 blood levels with increased prostate cancer incidence, 41.1% of the men who went on to develop prostate cancer had baseline PSA readings greater than 3.0 ng/mL. In the group that did not develop prostate cancer, only 7.3% has a PSA baseline reading greater than 3.0 ng/mL.
- 7.3% of the No Cancer group had PSA of 3.0
- 41.1% of the Total Cancer group had PSA of 3.0
This critical piece of data was ignored in the tabloid-like media articles that erroneously blamed the increase in prostate cancer on omega-3s.

While researchers are not sure exactly how boron lowers risk for prostate cancer, the new study shows that men who consumed the greatest amount of boron were 64% less likely to develop prostate cancer, when compared with men who consumed the least amount of boron in the study. The findings were presented this week at the Experimental Biology conference in Orlando, Fla.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer in this country in the year 2000, and about 31,900 men will die of this disease. Boron is a naturally occurring trace element that is believed to play a role in certain cellular processes involved in cancer protection.
âThis is the very first study relating dietary boron intake and cancer risk,â says lead researcher Zuo-Fen Zhang, MD, PhD, director of the Cancer Epidemiology Training Program at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health.
While cautioning that the findings are preliminary, he tells WebMD that âthere was a big reduction of prostate cancer in people who consumed the greatest amount of boron.â
And those men in the study who ate the second-highest and third-highest amount of boron also had a lower risk than men in the study who consumed the least amount of boron, he says.
The next step, he says, is to repeat the findings in a larger study to see if the results hold.

Fish Oil Increases Risk Of Prostate Cancer
A new study has been making its rounds online that suggests a connection between omega-3 fats and prostate cancer risk. Is this true, or possibly just another case of the research literature being sensationalized in the popular media in a grab for headlines? Let us examine.
The study in question is one that appears to be a study based off of the SELECT trials which initially did not find a protective effect of supplementation on prostate cancer, but say an increased risk associated with vitamin E occurred during prolonged follow-up. This led to the current study.
A new study found that fish oil supplementation is associated with increased risk for increased prostate cancer. The study was a observational, and used participants from a previous large scale intervention called SELECT.

Does Fish Oil Cause Prostate Cancer
I was very upset to read about the study showing that fish oil raises the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Ive been taking omega-3 supplements for heart health but stopped when I heard the news about its effect on prostate cancer. Whats your take on the study?
Andrew Weil, M.D. | July 26, 2013
I know of no reason why you shouldnt resume taking your fish oil supplements. The study in question, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash., made headlines and snagged lots of sound bites, but much of the news coverage including that in medical publications did not accurately reflect the findings. Aside from the sensationalist way it was reported, the study itself has serious shortcomings.
As reported, the study found that men who had high concentrations of omega-3s in their blood had a risk of developing prostate cancer that was 43 percent higher than men who had the lowest blood levels of these fatty acids. Even more alarming was the finding that men with the highest blood levels of omega-3s had a 71 percent higher risk of aggressive, possibly fatal prostate cancer than those with the lowest levels. The study was published online on July 10, 2013, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Exercise And Lose Weight
Exercising and losing weight are some of the best things you can do to promote prostate health. Many studies show that moderate or vigorous exercise reduces risk of BPH and urinary tract symptoms and helps with prostatitis as well. Exercise also benefits your cardiovascular health and can help prevent other health and sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction.
If you are overweight, losing weight is one of the most important natural changes you can make in improving your prostate health, whether your concerns are cancer, BPH or prostatitis. A study published in the Journal of Urology found that overweight men, especially men with a high amount of abdominal fat, have an increased risk of BPH. If you are looking to shrink the prostate, losing weight can help you reduce your prostate size and help relieve annoying and frustrating urinary symptoms. On top of that, weight loss can reduce your risk for prostate cancer and help relieve prostatitis, too.
