Black Pepper: The Good and Bad Health Effects

High blood pressure is a huge health risk worldwide. In fact, over 40% of adults over 25 have high blood pressure .

Interestingly, animal studies have shown that the capsaicin in cayenne peppers may reduce high blood pressure.

One study in mice with high blood pressure showed that the long-term consumption of dietary spices containing capsaicin helped reduce blood pressure .

Another study showed that capsaicin helped relax blood vessels in pigs, leading to lower blood pressure .

Its important to note that the findings above are based on animals, and capsaicins effects may differ in humans. It is best to take these findings with a grain of salt.

Summary:

Capsaicin has appeared to reduce blood pressure in animal studies. Human studies are needed before making a recommendation.

Capsaicin And The Cell Cycle

Cells proliferate through the cell cycle, which is divided into G0/G1, S and G2/M phases, and which has DNA checkpoints to ensure the integrity of DNA replication. The checkpoint and repair pathways facilitate cellular responses to DNA damage. Any alteration in these pathways can increase the risk of cancer. The cell cycle and growth arrest has gained much attention as a defense mechanism against cancer and target for cancer prevention and therapy, as well as tissue homeostasis . Essential parts of the cell-cycle machinery are the cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases and the CDK inhibitors. Once activated, the CDKs provide a driving force for the cells to move from one phase to the next. In particular, the CDKs and cyclins are highly activated in most cancer types. Therefore, suppression of CDK activity results in cell-cycle arrest and has been identified as a target for cancer therapy to prevent uncontrolled proliferation of cancer cells.

What About Potential Benefits

At the same time, claims have been lodged on behalf of black pepper’s potentially positive impact on health.

For example, the Anesthesia and Uncommon Diseases book also notes that black pepper has been variously used to treat bronchitis, an upset stomach, skin irritation, neuralgia and cancer.

In addition, according to a research published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition in June 2013, black pepper which also goes by the scientific name Piper nigrum L. is thought by some experts to have some antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. The study also highlights other claims that black pepper might have potential as an inhibitor of tumor growth and as a means by which to improve gastrointestinal function.

But the study notes that, once again, all the evidence to back up these purported claims is rooted in animal research, which doesn’t necessarily translate to human experience. The study notes that more research involving human participants is needed to confirm such potential benefits.

Article #: Black Pepper Causes Cancer

Confirmation of Life Sciences teaching that anything taken into the body that is not a food is poisonous and harmful comes from the research laboratory of the University of Kentucky.

Life Science teaches not to use condiments on, in or with our foodsor by themselves. In fact, we teach to eat only foods that are a gustatory delight in themselves. For good health we must eat only those foods that dont call for the addition of seasonings or spices of any sort. Foods and so-called foods that have to be jazzed up with condiments are unhealthful.

When black pepper was given to mice at the University of Kentucky, they developed problems aplenty, including cancer of the liver, lungs and skin. This is a prime example of how toxic condiments really are. Cayenne pepper, chili powder, salt, basil, cumin seed, caraway, vinegar, garlic and hundreds of other condiments are likewise pathogenic and carcinogenic.

To attain and maintain health, you need to drop condiments from your lifeforever. Eat only fresh raw succulent fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. The better your diet, the better youll look and feel.

Your Best Prostate Cancer Fighter

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men. Over 30,000 men die from it in the United States each year. Deaths from prostate cancer failed to drop in past decades while we spent billions on treatments. Heres why: Advanced prostate cancer cells hardly respond even to high doses of drugs or radiation.

Because of the poor response to drugs, scientists keep searching for treatments. Theres particular interest in the compounds found in foods. And capsaicin is one of the best anti-cancer foods there is. But what makes them so powerful?

Cells turn into cancer for one reason they dont die. Normally, cells live their life, replicate, and then they die before they cause any damage. Cancer occurs when the cells refuse to die off. And since peppers help with apoptosis, this gave researchers a clue in discovering why they work so well. They found that capsaicin does something very unique with cancer cells. The hot spice doesnt actually attack the cancer and kill it.

Instead, capsaicin travels through your body looking for cancer cells. When it finds one, it attaches itself to the edge of the cell. From this position on the cell membrane, it switches on a cell receptor called TRPV1. This receptor acts as a channel that determines what goes in and out of the cells.

When the capsaicin turns on the TRPV1, it sends the cancer cell into overdrive where it starts to self-destruct. The more capsaicin in your body, the more cancer cells it forces to self-destruct.

Can Hot Peppers Cure Prostate Cancer

Every year, over 200,000 men in the world lose their battle with prostate cancer, and more are diagnosed with the disease every year. Naturally, we look for anything promising that might cure prostate cancer or prevent it, and in 2006 a few studies on the benefit of the chemical capsaicin, which is found in hot red peppers, suggest we may have found a way to treat more people with prostate cancer and benign prostate enlargement.

According to a joint US/Japan study in mice, mice that had prostate tumors and receive high doses of capsaicin, had about an 80% rate of cell death or apoptosis of tumor tissue. Though researchers note that induced human cancers in mice are easier to treat, this is still a fairly noteworthy result. You can see from the study that capsaicin does not totally cure prostate cancer, but its use may be indicated to prevent tumor growth and as an auxiliary treatment for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It also appears that some men are aided by the anti-inflammatory properties of capsaicin, which might minimize discomfort and reduce growth of the prostate.

How Turmeric May Work

The popular herbal medicine contains the antioxidant curcumin, a curcuminoid that is responsible for turmerics yellow color and prevents inflammation by blocking molecules that cause it. Although the medicinal use of turmeric is not fully understood, the spice is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a variety of illnesses.

Curcumin, the primary active ingredient in turmeric, protects the body in two ways:

  • Enhancing the activity of an important detoxifying enzyme
  • Neutralizing molecules that cause DNA damage, such as free radicals

Studies of turmeric in rats have shown the spice to be vital in the prevention of kidney damage from toxins. Additional studies have shown that it may also have protective effects against colon, stomach, and skin cancer by stopping the replication of tumor cells in the lab. The effect in the human body is still being studied.

Although research on turmeric as an anti-cancer supplement has been promising, especially in preventing and limiting the spread of prostate cancer, recent experiments suggest that it may interfere with the activity of some chemotherapy drugs.

Therefore, questions remain about its overall efficacy and clinical relevance as an adjunct to traditional cancer treatments.

A study in Cancer Research shows that capsaicin thwarted prostate cancer cells in lab tests. Capsaicin prompted cancer cells to die and curbed tumor growth, the study shows.

However, capsaicin wasnt tested on people. The experiments were done on prostate cancer cells, including those injected into mice.

The researchers included H. Phillip Koeffler, MD. He works at the University of California at Los Angeles and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
