Quercetin: Is It Good for Prostate Health?

Most prostate cancers are silent, meaning they dont have symptoms until theyre more advanced. So even if you dont experience symptoms of prostate problems, its crucial to have regular physical exams and screenings to check for prostate cancer.

According to Coogan, men with a family history of prostate cancer should start being screened at 40 years old. Black men are also at higher risk and should begin being screened at 40, while white men with no family history of prostate cancer should begin screening at age 50.

The single most important thing I tell my patients is to get regular screenings, Coogan says. We want to catch the cancer at the earliest, most treatable stage.

Cranberries And Prostate Health

Limited research has suggested cranberry may be beneficial for managing an enlarged prostate and prostatitis. One study included men who had lower urinary tract symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Study participants who took 1,500 mg of dried powdered cranberries every day for six months experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms when compared with men who took a placebo.

In another study, rats with chronic bacterial prostatitis were given either cranberry, ciprofloxacin, E. coli extract, or no treatment . Rats given cranberry showed a significant reduction in inflammation of the prostate and in bacterial growth when compared with the control group.

Its also possible that cranberries may help with side effects following a prostate biopsy, which may include trouble urinating and urinary urgency. Proanthocyanidins are potent antioxidants, and their immune-boosting abilities can help avoid possible infection after a prostate biopsy.

In Vitro Proliferation And Colony Survival Assay

Cells were plated in ninety-six-well plates and treated with gradient concentrations of GE the next day. After 72 h of incubation, cell proliferation was determined using the Alamar blue cell proliferation assay. The magnitude of the fluorescent signal is proportional to the number of live cells, and is monitored using 530560 nm excitation wavelength and 590 nm emission wavelength. For the colony assay, PC-3 cells were treated with 250 g/ml of GE for 48 h, washed and replaced with regular RPMI medium. After 10 d, colonies were fixed with 4 % formaldehyde, stained with crystal violet and counted.

Get Your Fill Of Green Tea

While watermelon seed and hibiscus teas need to be prepared from scratch, you can buy green tea at the supermarket. You can find flavored green tea and decaf green tea, which is ideal, since high levels of caffeine often make BPH symptoms worse.

If drinking cups of tea isn’t your thing, there are other ways you can fit plenty of green tea into your diet. Use it instead of juice or milk in your morning smoothie or as the base for your oatmeal or add 1/2 teaspoon of matcha powder to the mix. Add brewed green tea leaves to your soup, stir-fry, or lasagna.

Prostavol Prostate Support contains 50 milligrams of green tea leaf, along with a variety of other ingredients shown through research to promote prostate health.

A healthy diet is your first line of defense against a number of health conditions, including prostate problems. Adding green, watermelon seed, or hibiscus tea to your daily diet can go a long way toward better prostate health.

Cranberries And Blood Pressure

Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture in Maryland report that cranberry juice can lower blood pressure in healthy adults when they drink it every day. Given that about 75 million American adults have high blood pressure or roughly one-third of that populationthis discovery about cranberries can be helpful for heart health in many individuals.

In the study, 56 healthy volunteers drank two either 8-ounce glasses of cranberry juice or a matched placebo daily for eight weeks. The study was highly controlled, as all the participants had their meals provided for them throughout the entire study so body weight could be managed.

Although the reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure declined by an average of only 3 mmHg in the study, the authors rated the diastolic drop as significant when compared with placebo. Thats because the diastolic number is less than the systolic, and so a 3 mmHg reduction is more meaningful.

According to , an author of the study, If are trying to reduce blood pressure through diet, low-calorie cranberry juice would be something that would be good and healthful to include in that diet, especially if you choose a low-calorie juice over a less healthful beverage.

This is not the only study to find a heart-related benefit for cranberries.

Superfoods For A Healthy Prostate

A balanced diet may reduce your risk for prostate problems.

The prostate, which is part of the male reproductive system, is a gland that surrounds the bladder and urethra. It is about the size of a walnut and grows throughout a mans life. As you age, its important to maintain a healthy prostate. The gland can become enlarged, and prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men.

Theres no definitive evidence that good nutrition can prevent prostate problems, but eating a healthy balanced diet may reduce your risk. Building a meal and snack around veggies and fruit is a smart idea for health in general, and particularly a healthy prostate, says Chris Mohr, PhD, RD, nutrition expert for New York Times bestseller LL Cool Js Platinum Workout and advisory board member for Mens Fitness magazine.

Here are six foods you can eat to boost your prostate health.

Questions And Answers About Calcium

  • What is calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is needed for basic blood vessel, muscle, and nerve functioning, for sending signals from cell to cell, and for releasing hormones. It is the most common mineral in the body. The body stores calcium mainly in bone tissue.

  • How is calcium given or taken?

The main sources of calcium are in foods and dietary supplements. About one-third of dietary calcium comes from milk and milk products like cheese and yogurt. Vegetable sources include Chinese cabbage, kale, and broccoli. Foods may have calcium added, such as fruit juices and drinks, tofu, and cereals.

Most research about calcium and prostate cancer risk has studied calcium in the diet and not calcium in supplements.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using calcium?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using calcium.

  • A 2005 review found a possible link between an increased risk of prostate cancer and a diet high in dairy products and calcium.
  • A review of studies published between 1996 and 2006 found that milk and dairy products in the diet increased the risk of prostate cancer.
  • A 2008 review of 45 studies found no link between dairy products and the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Population studies

Supplementing Zinc For Maintaining Adequate Zinc Levels In Older Men: Not All The Sources Of Zinc Are Alike

4 Superfoods to Improve Your Prostate Health

Taken together, more than 50% of men over 60 suffer from BPH, and also have low zinc status. Thus, there is a strong case for establishing a program of zinc supplementation in men over 50 due to the endogenous and exogenous factors presented above. Several studies showed that the treatment of malignant prostate cells with zinc that will increase cellular zinc levels leads to the inhibition of cell proliferation, promotion of apoptosis, and inhibition of cell migration and invasion . However, there are many options available for supplementation, and choosing the correct supplement may be critical to achieving effects in prostate tissues.

The way of cellular uptake and the protection from sequestering by metallothionines, as well as slower excretion profiles may give organic zinc supplements such as ZnAAs an advantage that could be especially beneficial for older individuals. In particular, because older individuals may have restricted dietary habits with nutrients low in zinc or with high concentrations of uptake antagonists. In addition, medications that are taken and that limit zinc availability may be less disruptive for ZnAAs. Besides, metallic amino acid complexes have been used as human supplements and have a long history of safety and efficacy. They are frequently used as a mineral supplement for animals, where extensive research data shows their effectiveness and advantages over inorganic supplements.

Is A Prostate Massage The Same Thing As Trying For A Prostate Orgasm

Yes. If you massage the prostate in a way that feels good, youre probably going to have an orgasm if you keep at it.

Some doctors recommend prostate massage therapy to help relieve the symptoms of certain conditions, such as painful ejaculation prostatitis.

Yep! Though evidence on the efficacy of prostate massage for certain conditions is somewhat limited, it does appear to have some benefits.

What Are The Causes Of An Enlarged Prostate

In a vast majority of cases, BPH is idiopathic, meaning it has no known cause. Doctors and researchers are still trying to figure out exactly how and why some peoples prostate cells start to divide abnormally.

But most cases of BPH impact men of at least 40 years of age, most commonly those 50 years of age and older. So most studies suggest that BPH is related to hormonal changes, specifically those that occur naturally with age.

As men grow older, their hormone levels change, especially levels of testosterone, estrogen, and a by-product of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone .

A few studies have shown that changes in the balance of these hormones may trigger some prostate cells to abnormally grow and divide.

Potential risk factors of an enlarged prostate include:

Most men have a 50 percent chance of having BPH by the age of 60 years old, and a 90 percent chance by the age of 85 years old.

Several types of foods and nutrients can reduce or trigger BPH and its associated symptoms.

Foods that may be beneficial to BPH include:

Foods people with BPH, or those at risk of developing it, should avoid or limit include:

Aim For A Healthy Eating Pattern

Instead of focusing on specific foods, dietitians, physicians, and researchers tout an overall pattern of healthy eating and healthy eating is easier than you might think. In a nutshell, here’s what experts recommend:

Saw Palmetto: Good For Prostate Health?

The effects of body weight, physical activity, and diet on prostate cancer risk aren’t completely clear, but there are things you can do that might lower your risk.

Some studies have found that men who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of developing advanced prostate cancer or prostate cancer that is more likely to be fatal.

Although not all studies agree, several have found a higher risk of prostate cancer in men whose diets are high in dairy products and calcium.

For now, the best advice about diet and activity to possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer is to:

    • Get to and stay at a healthy weight.
    • Keep physically active.

Unlocking Zincs Potential To Fight Cancer

    AP_ProstateHealthFoods

    Background:

When I first dived into the supplements that could help fight cancer, one of those I came across was Zinc. I found a lot of literature indicating that Zinc would indeed represent an useful tool, but also found literature indicating that cancer cells may actually like Zinc. In line with this, there are holistic doctors and naturophats who are recommending the use of Zinc to their cancer patients, while others are totally against that. As a result, although I ordered some bottles of capsules, I decided not to use them. There are so many potential treatments out there, and it would not make sense to use something as long as we do not understand it and its potential is still debated.

However, latter I did a deeper dive into this subject to better understand it and as a result of that I became enthusiastic regarding the potential of Zinc in cancer. As I will further discuss, based on my current understanding taking Zinc alone will not help. But when combined with another drug, Zinc may have a great potential.

The Zinc level in most of cancer cells seems to be maintained via a down regulation of the transporters responsible for the transport of Zinc across cellular membrane . That means, that we can take as much Zinc supplements as we like, and yet that may never get into the cancer cells at the level required to disrupt their normal function.

So what can we do, if we want to push more Zinc into the cancer cells and disrupt their function?
