Choosing Supplements For Prostate Cancer: Part Two

The urethra, which is the tube urine travels through on its way out of the bladder, runs right through the prostate. Over time, the prostate can grow large enough to press down on and squeeze the urethra. This pressure narrows the exit.

This can make it more difficult for the bladder to release urine. Eventually, the bladder may become so weak that it cant release urine normally.

This can lead to symptoms such as:

  • a constant need to urinate
  • an urgent need to urinate
  • a weak urine stream
  • dribbling after urination

You can treat these symptoms with:

  • lifestyle changes, such as training the bladder to reduce bathroom trips or drinking fewer alcoholic and caffeinated beverages to reduce the urge to go
  • medicines that relax the muscles of the prostate and bladder
  • procedures to remove excess prostate tissue

Can Cialis Be Used To Treat Ed After Prostate Surgery

Yes, Cialis can be used to treat ED after prostate surgery.

A clinical trial was done in people with ED who had surgery to have their prostate removed. The people used either Cialis or a placebo as needed. After 4 weeks, the people took a portion of a survey called the Index of Erectile Function . A higher score on the IIEF meant that erectile function was better, so ED symptoms improved.

The study showed that:

  • people who took Cialis after prostate surgery had an increase in their scores of about 5.3 points
  • people who took a placebo after prostate surgery had an increase of about 1.1 points

Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia can now be prescribed tadalafil , it has been announced.

Pharmaceutical maker Lilly has been licenced by the European Commission for the use of tadalafil to treat the symptoms of BPH also known as benign enlargement of the prostate having already had a licence to use it for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The move means doctors now have the option of prescribing a single medication to treat both conditions. Some 3.2 million men in the UK a third of those aged over 50 suffer from BPH symptoms while ED affects more than half those aged between 50 and 70. It is estimated some 1.15 million men in the UK are affected by both conditions.

Blame Aging For Bph And Ed

BPH symptoms usually dont begin until after age 50, and they become more common the older you get. The same thing is true of erectile dysfunction . As you get older, your ability to have and maintain an erection declines. It is common that the men we see with BPH will also have erectile dysfunction, says Jason Hedges, M.D., a urologist at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. So are the two connected? Its not necessarily that BPH cause ED, or ED causes BPH, but a lot of men will have both, says Dr. Hedges.

The effects may last longer than 24 hours, so you’re not recommended to take the 10mg or 20mg tablets every day.

For the tablet to work properly, youll need to be sexually excited.

If you have a private prescription for tadalafil, read the information that comes with your medicine carefully. The strength and dosage instructions can vary.

However, if you are taking Cialis for BPH , you take your dose every day, and the dose is normally the 5mg tablet. As with any medication, you need to follow your doctorâs instructions on dosing and how often to take your medication.

More From Martin Scurr For The Daily Mail

The experience of most patients is that the neck goes through periods of pain and stiffness with little obvious reason behind the flare-ups.

Those who are severely affected should undergo a magnetic resonance imaging scan as this shows the bones, joints and the soft tissue in detail.

The most common treatment is precisely placed local anaesthetic and cortisone injections to relieve swelling and inflammation. In severe cases, surgery is necessary to relieve trapped nerve roots.

I know of no good evidence that glucosamine makes any difference at all, and the same goes for a host of other natural remedies.

I am also reluctant to allow patients to undergo frequent osteopathic manipulation as there is a potential risk of nerve or spinal cord damage, although when administered with care, it can be helpful to unlock muscle spasm at the time.

A physiotherapist may be helpful in teaching you exercises to keep the muscles of your neck supple and strong.

I would recommend that you seek referral for an MRI scan to reach an exact diagnosis, and maybe the expertise of a pain control clinic.

An enlarged prostate can also be the cause of other problems. If the enlarged prostate is causing symptoms, the best treatment would be a natural remedy. In the meantime, there are treatments for a wide range of conditions that cause a man to experience pain. A common surgical procedure involves an electric loop, laser, or electro-stimulation. The procedure is a safe and effective option for treating enlarged or symptomatic BPH.

Adding Cialis To The Mix

Furthermore, in 2011, the FDA had already approved Cialis for treatment of BPH symptoms, too. Thus, in men with BPH, Cialis demonstrates double efficacyit helps with urination, and it helps with erectile dysfunction.

Fortunately, the science supports the practice of adding drugs chiefly aimed at erectile dysfunction to BPH medication regimens. In a huge randomized-control trial sponsored by Eli Lilly, makers of Cialis , 695 men were given either Cialis or placebo in addition to the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor finasteride.

Results were very encouraging with statistically significant improvements in sexual desire, orgasmic function, erectile function, and overall sexual satisfaction observed in those taking Cialis with finasteride. Moreover, adverse effects were few and tolerable. Results were measured at four, 12, and 26 weeks of therapy using a questionnaire titled the International Index of Erectile Function.

Swollen Prostate Treatments That May Lead To Erectile Dysfunction

Managing a swollen prostate may require medication, or sometimes surgery to get it under control.

These treatments can be effective in getting the prostate to an acceptable state, but may sometimes do so at the expense of causing serious side-effects, notable of which is erectile dysfunction.

Drugs to manage benign prostatic hyperplasia like alpha blockers such as tamsulosin and terazosin, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride and dutasteride have side effects that include erectile dysfunction.

In treating prostate cancer, procedures like a radical prostatectomy may lead to injuries of the cavernous nerve and blood cells.

This can cause ED. Hormonal therapy in the form of androgen-deprivation is also known to cause erectile dysfunction and decreased sexual desire.

Radiation therapy to treat cancer can also lead to nerve damage, which may lead to ED. There are however some promising approaches to reduce the risks of erectile dysfunction following this treatment.

In instances where ED occurs following treatment for a swollen gland, measures like the use of PDE5 inhibitors, intracavernosal injections, and combination therapy may be able to treat sexual dysfunction.

As always, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider to ensure you get the best and safest advice on what approaches to consider for your specific condition.
