Your Support Helps Find Better Prostate Cancer Treatment

Some prostate cancers are very aggressive and respond poorly to treatment. Todays clinical tests are not very effective at predicting how a persons prostate tumour will respond to specific drug therapies. Dr Thomas Kislinger and his team are finding new ways to predict how a tumour will behave, and help match people with the best treatments for their specific cancer.

Were working to develop targeted treatments that improve outcomes for people with aggressive prostate cancer, and save lives, says Dr Kislinger.

Your Support Helps Fund The Most Innovative Research

If prostate cancer returns after treatment, it is typically resistant to standard therapies. One new treatment for these hard-to-treat prostate cancers focuses on turning ON a specific cancer blocking protein, but Dr Etienne Audet-Walsh and his team are challenging this idea and researching the effects of turning the protein OFF to stop cancer growth and destroy cancer cells.

Our findings go against everything we know, or think we know about this protein, says Dr Audet-Walsh.

If their theory is correct, their research will break ground for further studies and save countless lives.

Whats National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a month-long event organized by leading cancer fundraising organizations. As the second most common cancer in American men, its important to make sure the general public understands early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer as well as ways to help.

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month has several key goals:

  • Education: Many dont realize prostate cancer affects so many. With 1 in 9 men getting a prostate cancer diagnosis in his lifetime, this is a widespread disease.
  • Early detection:Like most cancers, early detection makes all the difference in prognosis. One of the main goals of this awareness month is to encourage men to get pre-screened regularly.
  • Fundraising:This is an important month for boosting fundraising efforts toward research and patient support.
  • Support:Everyone wants to feel supported, especially if theyre currently undergoing cancer treatment or know someone who is. This is a month for honoring all that they go through. From positive messages for cancer patients to just being there, this makes a big difference.
  • Remembrance:Last but not least, National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is when loved ones honor those theyve lost to prostate cancer.

There are no limits to how or when you spread awareness about prostate cancer. That being said, having a specific month to honor those affected ensures theres some stability in the ongoing fight for research.

Prostate Cancer And High

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is one of the most common male cancers … and its going to kill about 34,000 men, thats here in the United States, Tewari told TODAY. Its a pretty serious health issue.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer is more common among older men and risk rises after age 50.

While screening for men normally starts when they are 55, some groups are recommended to start earlier because they are at higher risk. High-risk groups include:

  • Black men.
  • Men with a family history.
  • Men exposed to certain chemicals, such as Agent Orange.
  • First responders.

Detecting it early leads to successful treatment, but encouraging regular screenings can be tough.

The challenge is that this is a cancer which will not produce any symptoms until it has become incurable, Tewari said. If we want to cure it … we have to find it before it has produced any symptoms.

Prostate cancer screenings can be done by either a blood test that monitors levels of PSA, which increase when a person has prostate cancer, or a rectal exam. Black men are at higher risk of developing prostate cancer and also dying from it.

Higher mortality is more troubling and that higher mortality discussion is tied to more than one thing, Tewari said. Partially, it could be because of increased aggressiveness of the cancer but I have a feeling it also has a major underpinning of when they present .

Healthy Diet And Exercise For Prostate Health

A healthy, unprocessed diet and regular exercise are two basic lifestyle approaches that have been extensively shown in studies to support prostate health and reduce prostate cancer risks. Avoiding processed foods, high sodium foods and carbohydrates, and sugars can help you support healthy prostate and urinary function.

One new study published in Cancer, showed that a Mediterranean diet significantly reduced risks of prostate cancer progression. In this large study, men with early-stage prostate cancer who consumed a diet with more fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fish showed a significantly reduced risk of their cancer growing or advancing.

Studies continue to show the links between eating whole foods, and an unprocessed diet, and reducing prostate cancer risks and aggression.1

Its also important to exercise and move your body to support a healthy prostate, and reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

A new study including over 140,000 men published in theInternational Journal of Epidemiology showed that men who had a variation in their genetic code that corresponded with greater physical activity, had up to 50% reduced risk of prostate cancer. This study adds to previous data showing how regular exercise can reduce risks of prostate cancer and other prostate health concerns.2

Annual checkups, prostate screenings, and seeing your doctor if you are concerned about your prostate health or symptoms are recommended for you to stay on top of your prostate health.

What Is Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate Cancer Awareness month

Cancer screening means looking for cancer before it causes symptoms. The goal of screening for prostate cancer is to find cancer early that may spread if not treated.

There is no standard test to screen for prostate cancer. Two tests that are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer are

  • A blood test called a prostate specific antigen test. PSA is a substance your prostate makes. This test measures the level of PSA in your blood. Your PSA level may be high if you have prostate cancer and for many other reasons, such as having an enlarged prostate, a prostate infection, or taking certain medicines.
  • Digital rectal examination, when a health care provider inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into a mans rectum to feel the prostate for anything abnormal, such as cancer.

So What Causes Prostate Cancer

Although its not crystal-clear what causes prostate cancer, doctors say it begins when some cells in the prostate become abnormal. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow and invade nearby tissues. Some abnormal cells can also break off and spread to other parts of the body. Some of the factors that can increase your risk of prostate cancer include:

  • Age: The risk of prostate cancer increases with growing age.
  • Family history: If your family has had a history of prostate cancer, you are at risk. Also, if you have a family history of genes that increase the risk of breast cancer or a very strong family history of breast cancer, your risk of prostate cancer may be higher.
  • Obesity: Obese men diagnosed with prostate cancer maybe more likely to have advanced disease thats more difficult to treat.
  • Race: Black men carry a greater risk of prostate cancer than do men of other races. In black men, prostate cancer is also more likely to be aggressive or advanced.
