If the prostate gland becomes swollen and tender, it is called prostatitis or prostate infection. The prostate gland is a walnut-shaped organ that lies just below a man’s urinary bladder. The prostate produces a fluid that goes into the semen. An inflamed or infected prostate gland may be seen in men of all ages. While the exact cause of prostate infection isnt known, some cases of prostatitis are clearly related to bacterial infections. Bacterial prostatitis isnt contagious and isnt a sexually transmitted disease. Below are a few common causes of prostate infection:

  • Severe injury to the groin
  • Recurrent use of a urinary catheter
  • Prostate biopsy

Can Complementary Therapies Help

PPT

Many men find complementary therapies help them deal with their symptoms and the day-to-day impact of their prostatitis, helping them feel more in control. Some men find they feel more relaxed and better about themselves and their treatment.

Complementary therapies are usually used alongside medical treatments, rather than instead of them. Some complementary therapies have side effects and some may interfere with your prostatitis treatment. So tell your doctor or nurse about any complementary therapies youre using or thinking of trying.

You should also tell your complementary therapist about your prostatitis and any treatments youre having, as this can affect what therapies are safe and suitable for you.

Some GPs and hospitals offer complementary therapies. But if you want to find a therapist yourself, make sure they are properly qualified and belong to a professional body. The;Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council;have advice about finding a therapist.

I would have thought you would have been on antibioitics for more than 3 days. I was always under the understanding that it was 10 days usually. I may have it wrong as I know for some of the newer drugs it 1 pill a day for 5 days. At any rate you are still having the same symptoms, so I would call or make an appointment with your physician. I think you need to let them know what’s happening NOW. They make have you come in, or change or increase your meds. Good luck to you. I know how painful this can be because my hubby went thru it for quit some time.

If you have a genuine infection in the prostate the ciprofloxacin is about the best overall antibiotic to knock the bugs on the head and actually penetrate the prostate. If there is no infection, you may have Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome . I went out to California from the UK for treatment in his clinic and would highly recommend it. However, if you do have an infection then you’ll need to be on 500mg of cipro twice a day for three weeks, followed by 250mg twice a day for a further three weeks. Don’t expect any drastic improvements straight away and definitely do not cut the dose short.

How Is Acute Prostatitis Treated

How to Cure Prostatitis Naturally? Treat Prostate Infection

Your doctor will likely prescribe antibiotics for four to six weeks to treat acute bacterial prostatitis. Your treatment may last longer if you have recurrent episodes. The specific type of antibiotic will depend on the bacteria causing your condition.

Your doctor may also prescribe alpha-blockers to help relieve symptoms. These drugs relax your bladder muscles. They can help decrease urinary discomfort. Examples include doxazosin, terazosin, and tamsulosin. Your doctor may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Your doctor may advise you to adjust your daily habits to help relieve symptoms. For example, they may encourage you to:

  • avoid bicycling or wear padded shorts to decrease pressure on your prostate
  • avoid alcohol, caffeine, and foods that are spicy and acidic
  • sit on a pillow or donut cushion
  • take warm baths

What Questions Should I Ask My Doctor

You may want to ask your healthcare provider:

  • What type of prostatitis do I have?
  • What is the best treatment for this type of prostatitis?
  • What are the treatment risks and side effects?
  • How can I avoid getting prostatitis again?
  • What type of follow-up care do I need after treatment?
  • Should I look out for signs of complications?

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Prostatitis is a common problem that affects many men. Unfortunately, theres a lot of confusion about the disease. People use the word prostatitis to describe four different conditions. There isnt a one-size-fits-all treatment for prostatitis, which is why an accurate diagnosis is so important.

Male Yeast Infections Can Involve The Prostate Gland

by Eric Bakker N.D.

Unfortunately many of the problems associated with yeast infections are somewhat cyclical and here I will identify two issues that cause many men problems, and which also at first glance, can result in a condition which appears distinct from yeast infection. Before I continue with this article, you should know I’ve recently compiled a list of science-backed ways to get rid of candida yeast infections. You can if you haven’t yet.

I have found that many men who suffer from prostate problems are subsequently identified as also suffering from a yeast infection. Although these may appear to be conditions which are entirely unrelated this is not in fact true. In men, any yeast which is collected by the penis can travel up the urethra and settle in the prostate which resides at the top. This may result in the man not developing significant symptoms of a yeast infection, but he can show signs of prostatitis. Obviously, if this condition is treated without the possibility of a yeast infection being investigated, then the prostatitis will recur. And, again obviously, this is a condition which is very worrying to a lot of men.

The other issue which causes cyclical prostatitis relates to that of alcohol. In my experience when it comes to men, beer is the major causation. Often men who drink beer will find they suffer not only from recurring prostatitis but also from jock itch.

What Are Prostate Infections And Prostatitis

The prostate gland is a part of a man’s reproductive system, secreting fluids that help transport sperm. The gland lies just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra .

Prostate infections may irritate the prostate and cause inflammation and swelling of the gland. Prostate infections occur most often in men aged 30-50 years but can occur in older men. Unfortunately, many people equate the terms prostate infection and prostatitis, but prostate infections comprise only two of the four major classifications of the term “prostatitis,” and infectious types comprise only a few of the total number of prostatitis diagnosed patients.

The National Institutes of Health consensus panel has designated four types of prostatitis classifications.

  • Acute bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome with subtypes of CPPS termed inflammatory and noninflammatory
  • Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis
  • The NIH has established extensive criteria for chronic pelvic pain syndrome that excludes infection and other problems and is as follows:

    Inclusion Criteria

    • male, at least age 18
    • pain or discomfort in the pelvic area for at least 3 months

    Exclusion Criteria

This classification system is important to understand because about 90% of men with prostatitis symptoms are diagnosed with chronic pelvic pain syndrome and, by definition, do not have infectious prostatitis.

Stress and depression are common in men with chronic infectious prostatitis.

    What Is A Prostate Infection

Interstitial Cystitis Treatment With Ruth Kriz

A prostate infection occurs when your prostate and the surrounding area become inflamed. The prostate is about the size of a walnut. Its located between the bladder and the base of the penis. The tube that moves urine from the bladder to the penis runs through the center of your prostate. The urethra also moves semen from the sex glands to the penis.

Several types of infections can affect the prostate. Some men with prostatitis experience no symptoms at all, while others report many, including intense pain.

How Do Doctors Diagnose A Prostate Infection

The diagnosis of both acute and chronic prostate infections begins with the history of the symptoms described above, the physical exam, including the digital exam of the prostate and often confirmed by culture and identification of the infecting organism.

    Acute bacterial prostatitis diagnosis

    • Usually an enlarged, firm, and tender prostate is enough to make a presumptive diagnosis and start treatment .
    • Because there is usually a low level of bacteria in urine, the doctor will perform a urinalysis to quantitate and identify infecting bacteria by urine culture.
    • If the person has symptoms suggesting the infection has spread outside the prostate , blood cultures and other blood tests are likely to be ordered.
    • If a spread of the infection is suspected, a doctor will often perform an ultrasound to help confirm the diagnosis and to rule out an abscess. If this ultrasound is not available, the doctor may perform a CT scan or MRI of the pelvis.

    Chronic bacterial prostatitis diagnosis

One of two tests are sometimes performed to help with the diagnosis:

The classic test is a Meares-Stamey 3-glass test. Three separate urine samples are collected and examined during this test. The last sample is taken after prostatic massage.

    Premassage and postmassage test

Men with recurrent urinary tract infections should have ultrasound imaging of their upper urinary tract and a plain abdominal X-ray or an intravenous urography to exclude a possible structural problem or a kidney stone.

How Is Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome Managed Or Treated

Prostatitis treatments vary depending on the cause and type. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis doesnt require treatment.

For chronic pelvic pain syndrome , your healthcare provider may use a system called UPOINT to classify symptoms into six categories. Your provider uses multiple treatments at the same time to treat only the symptoms youre experiencing.

Approximately 80% of men with CPPS improve with the UPOINT system. The system focuses on these symptoms and treatments:

    • Urinary: Medications, such as tamsulosin and alfuzosin , relax muscles around the prostate and bladder to improve urine flow.
    • Psychosocial: Stress management can help. Some men benefit from counseling or medications for anxiety, depression and catastrophizing .
    • Organ: Quercetin and bee pollen supplements may relieve a swollen, inflamed prostate gland.
    • Infection:Antibiotics kill infection-causing bacteria.
    • Neurologic: Prescription pain medicines, such as amitriptyline and gabapentin , relieve neurogenic pain. This pain can include fibromyalgia or pain that extends into the legs, arms or back.
    • Tenderness: Pelvic floor physical therapy may include myofascial release . This therapy can reduce or eliminate muscle spasms.

Increase In Mast Cells Irritate The Prostate

#Prostateinfectin Natural Remedies for Men to Treat a Prostate Infection.

    Chronic infection causes inflammation.

In response to inflammation, the body produces a greater number of localized mast cells, which makes matters worse. 20 Mast cells are produced during times of stress, as well as in response to ingesting foods or substances that trigger an allergic response. 21

Therefore, mast cell production in the bladder and prostate is basically an allergic response to inflammation that can increase the inflammatory cycle and locally suppress the immune system. 22 Remember that when provoked by a stimulus perceived as a threat to the immune system, mast cells release histamine, as well as a whole host of other inflammatory compounds. After a long period of inflammation, which has caused mast cells to pool in the prostate area, seasonal allergies can contribute to symptoms. The mast cells are there in larger numbers and will release their inflammatory cocktail in greater concentrations in areas of the body that are perceived as under attack.

Ive written previously about pollen allergies causing anxiety, but presumably they can contribute to some types of prostatitis as well.

I get into a study focusing on an autoimmune model of prostatitis in a couple paragraphs, but many people with mast cell issues dont do well with red meat, pork, and high fat diets. If you have allergies, cutting out saturated fat and going on more of a plant based diet for awhile could be helpful, especially, as we will see when you pair with certain antihistamines.

    Is It Prostatitis Or Bph

The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. The main job of this walnut-shaped gland is to add fluid to semen. The prostate is just below the urinary bladder, and it surrounds the most upstream portion of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the opening at the end of the penis.

Prostatitis refers to inflammation of the prostate. It can be caused by a traumatic injury to the prostate or by bacteria that got into the prostate from urine or during sex.

Prostatitis can be acute or chronic. Acute prostatitis tends to start quickly. Chronic prostatitis tends to last or come and go over a longer period of time.

An inflamed prostate without any symptoms is called asymptomatic prostatitis. This condition is often discovered when diagnosing something else.

BPH causes a person to have an enlarged prostate. This condition becomes more common as men age. As the prostate enlarges, it squeezes and blocks the urethra, making it hard to empty the bladder completely.
