Reasons Men Have Pain After Sex

Most of the time sex feels great, so it can be unsettling when you feel pain after intercourse. For some men, the pain can trigger performance anxiety and may diminish interest and pleasure during intercourse.

Causes for the pain vary depending on your sexual and general health, but one of the most common reasons include a condition called prostatitis, which affects up to 15 percent of the male U.S population.

Does Prostate Cancer Affect Sexual Function

Prostate cancer practically does not affect erectile function . However, all cancer treatments cause ED. Radical prostatectomy -no matter what method applied- causes ED in most men. The only possibility to have post-operative erections is when erectile nerves have been preserved. This is feasible to achieve with both open surgery and endoscopic procedures . With regard to erectile preservation, no superiority has been documented so far between laparoscopic and robotis surgery, as they both give similar results. As for radiation, this will also ultimately affect erectile function. Lastly, drugs for advanced prostate cancer also cause full ED. The only solution may be their intermittent use or intrapenile injections to cause erection. However, in men with good life expectancy, penile prosthesis offers an expensive but excellent solution.

Can Prostate Infections Make Me Infertile

Infections of the prostate can cause swelling and block off part of the reproductive passage that goes through the prostate. This can also stop sperm from being ejaculated.

Because the prostate and seminal vesicles create most of the fluid that you ejaculate, a blockage near the prostate can sometimes lower the amount of semen ejaculated. Infected cells can also be passed from the prostate and seminal vesicles into the semen, which can damage the sperm.

Assessment Of A History Of Sexually Transmitted Infections Prostatitis And Frequency Of Ejaculation

On the 1992 questionnaire, participants were asked whether they had ever had a diagnosis of syphilis, gonorrhea, or neither; whether they had ever had prostatitis or prostatic infection; how long their symptoms had persisted ; whether they had ever been treated for prostatitis; and at what age they were first treated . Participants were further asked how many ejaculations they had on average per month at ages 2029 and 4049 years and during the past year . We categorized gonorrhea and syphilis separately, as no, yes, or missing , and prostatitis as no, young-onset prostatitis , other prostatitis , and missing. Ejaculation frequency from ages 2029 years was used to describe early life sexual activity. We combined the lower two ejaculation frequency categories because of small numbers and included a missing category. Ejaculation frequencies from ages 4049 years and in the year prior to completion of the 1992 questionnaire were categorized in the same manner.

Should I Avoid Having Sex If I Have Prostatitis

The Young Man

Prostatitis is an extremely common condition affecting men. While it is more common in older men, it can occur at any age.

Essentially, it is an inflammation of the male prostate gland that may be the result of a bacterial or fungal infection. It can also occur without any infection simply from the result of mechanical irritation.;

According to some experts, prostatitis is the symptom-producing condition of the genitourinary tract for which men most often seek medical help. Roughly 40 percent of visits by men to urologists are for prostatitis.;

In a healthy man, prostatitis can be brought about by irritation to the gland from external stimuli, such as; bike or motorcycle riding, excessive exercise, sexual activity, or even lack of sufficient sexual activity. The term prostatitis is used by many medical professionals for almost all cases of prostate inflammation, even when there is no readily apparent cause.;

The purpose of the male prostate gland is to generate fluids for lubrication and transporting sperm containing semen outside the male body during sexual intercourse. This seminal fluid contains enzymes, some minerals, and, most importantly, sperm cells for propagating the species.;

Can I Prevent Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition that causes your prostate gland to become swollen, tender, and inflamed. It can be quite painful, especially when you pee or ejaculate . The most common locations of pain were the perineum , testes , suprapubic area , and penis

Doctors arenât always sure what causes prostatitis. Common causes vary depending on whether it is acute vs. chronic and/or infectious vs inflammation. Sometimes, an infection in your urinary tract is to blame. Other times, itâs due to an injury or nerve damage. In many cases, doctors never find the cause.

Because of that, treatment for prostatitis can be a challenge. For some men, it can take months — or even years — to recover.

Thereâs no sure way to prevent getting this condition, but many small lifestyle changes can help keep your prostate gland healthy. They may also help to lower your risk of prostatitis. If you already have problems with your prostate, try these tips to ease your symptoms and keep your issue from getting worse.

Have good hygiene. Keep your penis and the area around it clean to prevent infection.

Stand up when possible. When you sit for long periods, it puts pressure on your prostate gland and inflames it over time. Try to avoid long bike rides and sitting down for too long.

Eat more fruits and veggies. Theyâre high in nutrients that can keep your body healthy and help you fight off infections and inflammation.

Doctor Does Too Much Sex Enlarge The Prostate

Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men. There are concerns on whether frequent sex contributes to the development of prostate enlargement in general and especially in the evolvement of prostate cancer.

The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system. It is a major contributor to the formation of the seminal fluid that comes with ejaculation at the peak of sexual intercourse in males.

It produces nourishing materials, especially the sugary fructose, for the wellbeing of sperm cells. It is located just below the bladder where urine is stored, and in front of the rectum the last portion of the large intestine where the feces is stored.

Prostate enlargement: 100 for 100

In anatomical relationship, the prostate surrounds the tube that drains the urine from the urinary bladder, just as the tube is leaving the bladder.

A point of fact is that the prostate gland is destined to enlarge in all men as they get older, albeit at different rates in men of different extractions. Anyhow it goes, it is estimated with corroborative findings on autopsy that all men who lived up to 100 years had enlarged prostate a case of 100 for 100!

The good thing however is that most prostate enlargements are usually of no clinical consequence and are not problematic or symptomatic to the affected men since the prostate growth are mostly non-cancerous and non-strangulating.

How Is Acute Prostatitis Diagnosed

Your doctor will likely start by asking questions about your medical history. Theyll also conduct a physical examination.

Theyll probably conduct a digital rectal examination . During this procedure, theyll gently insert a gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum. Your prostate is located in front of your rectum, where your doctor can easily feel it. If you have acute bacterial prostatitis, it will likely be swollen and tender.

During a DRE, your doctor may also massage your prostate to squeeze a small amount of fluid into your urethra. They can collect a sample of this fluid for testing. Laboratory technicians can check it for signs of infection

Your doctor may also feel the lymph nodes in your groin, which may be enlarged and tender.

They may also conduct or order additional tests, such as:

  • a blood culture to rule out bacteria in your blood
  • a urinalysis or a urine culture to test your urine for blood, white cells, or bacteria
  • a urethral swab to test for gonorrhea or chlamydia
  • urodynamic tests to learn if you have problems emptying your bladder
  • a cystoscopy to examine the inside of your urethra and bladder for signs of infection

Prostatitis: Inflamed Prostate Can Be A Vexing Health Problem

When it comes to prostate trouble, the lions share of attention goes to prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate. A third condition, prostatitis, flies under the radar even though it affects up to one in six men at some point in their lifetimes. It triggers more than two million visits to doctors and untold agony each year.

Prostatitis, which means inflammation of the prostate gland, is an equal opportunity disorder. Unlike prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia , which predominantly affect older men, prostatitis affects men of all ages.

Prostatitis refers to a loose assemblage of syndromes characterized by urinary problems such as burning or painful urination, the urgent need to urinate, trouble voiding, difficult or painful ejaculation, and pain in the area between the scrotum and rectum or lower back. Although it causes some of the same symptoms as BPH and can occur at the same time, prostatitis is a separate condition.

Some types of prostatitis are caused by bacterial infection. These cases are often accompanied by the classic symptoms of infection, such as fever, chills, and muscle pain along with urinary problems. As a result, they are relatively easy to diagnose and treat, and they usually respond well to antibiotics. Unfortunately, such straightforward forms of prostatitis are the minority.

    Doc, is my husbandâs pain due to lack of sex and what can ...

    The prostate is a small gland situated between a man’s bladder and urethra. During sex, the gland’s primary function is to secrete the fluid that makes up a major portion of the semen which contains sperm necessary for reproduction. Prior to ejaculation, the prostate’s muscles push this fluid into the urethra. In addition, prostatic fluid contains an important enzyme known as Prostate Specific Antigen . Following ejaculation, semen has a tendency to thicken, which could threaten sperm efficacy and quality. However, PSA has semen-thinning properties that enable sperm to swim more freely upon entering a female’s reproductive tract.

    Review Of Current Literature About Cpps Risk Factors And Preparation Of A Vademecum Of Rules Regarding Diet Sexual Habits And Diet Modifications

    After an extensive and careful review of the literature, we found several risk factors whose role has been documented in the etiopathogenesis of CP/CPPS and its related conditions. We focused our analysis on 16 articles regarding prostatitis, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and on four papers concerning IC/BPS., , , When reviewing such articles, we found a total of 13 potentially eliminable risk factors: five came from diet; four were related to sexual habits; one on lifestyle; and three related to perineal traumatism causing pelvic floor muscle tenderness.

    Such risk factors are reported in and will be individually discussed in the following text.

    Frequent Sex May Be Protective

    Hence, not until very recently, the mainstream hypothesis had been too much sex might provoke the development of prostate cancer but a recently published research study thinks the direct opposite, postulating that frequent sex may be a protective factor in prostate cancer.

    The findings, published in the April 7 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association and reviewed on, are based on data collected from nearly 30,000 predominately white men aged 46 to 81.

    At the start of the study, men provided information on ejaculation frequency in their 20s, 40s, and in the previous year . Ejaculation frequency included sexual intercourse, masturbation, and nighttime ejaculations that can occur during sleep. The men were then monitored for eight years.

    Ordinarily, researchers found most categories of ejaculation frequency were unrelated to prostate cancer risk. But when they looked at men in the highest category of ejaculation frequency , they found evidence of a protective effect.

    According to Michael Leitzmann, MD, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, USA, who conducted the research during a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, when you look at the data in a little bit more detail, you do see that not only is there not an increased risk, but there is potentially even the possibility of a slight decrease in risk with high ejaculation frequency.

    Sex Hormones And Cancer Risk

    Visalini Nair-Shalliker, the studys lead author and research fellow at Cancer Council New South Wales suggests that these findings may be due to a sex hormone called antigen that is somehow linked to sexual activity. She explains that the more sexually active a man was, the greater his risk of developing prostate cancer is according to the studys findings and this might have something to do with antigen.

    However, the study fails to provide a causal link, meaning the researchers could not explain why exactly prostate cancer risk increases with the number of sexual partners or orgasm frequency. Nevertheless, these findings open the door to future research on finding the causes and other risk factors of this common cancer in men.

    Is There More Than One Type Of Prostatitis

    Chronic Prostatitis (Prostate Inflammation) | Causes, Treatment & Symptoms

    The main types of prostatitis are bacterial prostatitis and non-bacterial prostatitis.

    Bacterial prostatitis

    Bacterial prostatitis is an infection caused by bacteria. Its the easiest kind of prostatitis to diagnose and treat, although it can become serious if not dealt with quickly.

    Acute bacterial prostatitis is the least common form of prostatitis, but if the infection is not dealt with it can be life-threatening.

    Chronic bacterial prostatitis is when bacterial prostatitis comes back again and again. Its caused by an underlying problem in the prostate, such as prostate stones or an enlarged prostate , which attract bacteria. Chronic bacterial prostatitis is also a common cause of repeated urinary tract infections , which are infections in the urinary system.

    Non-bacterial prostatitis

    Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis is when the prostate is inflamed, but there isnt any bacteria present. We dont yet understand this form of prostatitis very well, although we know that they dont cause urinary tract infections. Symptoms can disappear and come back later, and are often made worse by stress.

    The Basics: How An Erection Occurs

    At its most basic level, an erection is a matter of hydraulics. Blood fills the penis, causing it to swell and become firm. But getting to that stage requires extraordinary orchestration of body mechanisms. Blood vessels, nerves, hormones, and, of course, the psyche must work together. Problems with any one of these elements can diminish the quality of an erection or prevent it from happening altogether.

    Nerves talk to each other by releasing nitric oxide and other chemical messengers. These messengers boost the production of other important chemicals, including cyclic guanosine monophosphate, prostaglandins, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. These chemicals initiate the erection by relaxing the smooth muscle cells lining the tiny arteries that lead to the corpora cavernosa, a pair of flexible cylinders that run the length of the penis .

    Figure 1: Anatomy of the penis

    The penis is made up of three cylindrical bodies, the corpus spongiosum which contains the urethra and includes the glans of the penisand two corpora cavernosa , that extend from within the body out to the end of the penis to support erection. Blood enters the corpora cavernosa through the central arteries.
