What Happens During The Greenlight Procedure

The following is intended as a general overview. Your experience may differ. Please talk to your doctor about potential risks and questions you may have about the procedure.

  • Before treatment begins, you may be asked to empty your bladder.
  • You will then be brought into the procedure room and moved to the treatment bed where you will lie on your back. Your doctor may give you medication to help you relax.
  • The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. This means that you will be asleep during the procedure. A different type of anesthesia may be used, depending on the treatment center.
  • Once the anesthesia takes effect, your doctor will insert a small scope into your urethra. The scope allows your doctor to see the inner surfaces of the urethra, prostate and bladder.
  • After the scope is in place, your doctor will advance the laser device through the scope to the location of the enlarged prostate tissue.
  • Your doctor will then vaporize the prostate tissue that is obstructing urine flow. Dead tissue that is not immediately vaporized will be passed naturally in your urine during the first few days after your surgery.
  • A temporary urinary catheter may be placed at the end of the procedure to let urine drain from your bladder.
  • What Does It Involve

GreenLight laser is an endoscopic procedure. A laser fibre cable is inserted into the urethra, and a high-precision cytoscope eliminates the excess prostatic tissue by vaporising it. This technique ensures immediate coagulation of the blood vessels, thus reducing the risk of bleeding.

The laser has a high-energy and a wavelength of 532 nanomillimetres.

Analysis Of Both Bph Treatment Options

Both button TURP and green light laser have similar advantages:

    • Both are either an outpatient or overnight procedures
    • Both have less chance of bleeding
    • Theres a faster return to activities
    • And reduced the time period of catheterization.

An advantage button TURP has over green light laser is that the surgeon is able to retrieve a sample of the prostate tissue to be examined for any signs of prostate cancer. In addition, it takes a shorter period of time, about 60 minutes, to remove more tissue with a button TURP vs Greenlight laser. Many men will also experience fewer post-surgery symptoms when button TURP is performed over laser surgery.

Ultimately, the decision of which one to use should be guided by an experienced urologist who has performed numerous surgeries using both button TURP and green light laser. They can help a man determine the course of action to take to achieve the best results.

What Can You Expect The Day Of Your Procedure

On the day of your procedure, you will come to the treatment center. You should have someone drive you home since this is an outpatient procedure. Keep in mind that different patients may require a different treatment regimen.

Before treatment, your physician may give you medication to help you relax during the procedure. You may also receive medication to help you avoid infections. You may be asked to empty your bladder.

You will be brought into the procedure room and moved into the treatment bed where you will lie on your back. You will be provided anesthesia that will allow you to sleep through the entire procedure. Depending on the treatment center, other types of anesthesia may be used, including spinal block or a nerve block.

Once you are asleep or the anesthesia block takes effect, your physician will insert a cystoscope through your urethra. The laser fiber is introduced through the cystoscope and advanced into the urethra at the location of the prostate. The physician systematically vaporizes the enlarged prostate tissue until the obstruction is removed.

    Potential Side Effects And Complications

All procedures have the potential for side effects. Although these complications are well recognised, the majority of patients do not have problems after a procedure.

Risks of the anaesthetic need to be discussed with the anaesthetist who will be looking after you during the operation, and who will visit you beforehand.

There are specific risks with this surgical procedure, and these will be discussed with you before your procedure. As a guide to complement that one-on-one discussion with your surgeon, these include:

    Rezum Water Vapor Procedure

Green Light Laser Vaporization Of Prostate Cpt Code

Just like Aquablation, Rezum therapy works with the least invasive instrument in a surgeons kit: water. Only this time, water is used in its steam state.

The procedure is non-surgical and can take place even in the doctors office. The purpose of Rezum is not to cut away excess tissue, like in the case of Aquablation. Instead, it relies on the power that steam releases over time to be absorbed by the prostate gland and shrink its size over time.

Once the Rezum procedure is over, BPH symptoms like trouble with urination start fading away after two weeks. The full results of this therapy reach their peak after three months.

Enlarged Prostate Laser Surgery: Recovery Side Effects And Natural Treatment

Prostate enlargement is a common feature in males over fifty years of age. Prostate is a gland at the base of the urinary bladder and around the urethra. It is in a size of large chest-nut. Most common enlargement of prostate is benign enlargement of prostate. It is non-cancerous and usually causes obstruction of urine outflow, increase in frequency of urination especially in night and dull pain below umbilical region. Cancerous enlargement is dangerous and can spread to surrounding organs.Enlargement can be due to exposure to cold and chill, infectious diseases, excessive sexual excitement, constipation etc. Prostate problems affect many men, especially those in their senior years.

The laser procedure has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Still, in most cases, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This is especially true if the procedure is done by a trained and licensed medical professional using FDA approved laser equipment.

Laser surgery is minimally invasive thus the chances of bleeding are minimal. This means that the procedure can also be done on those who are taking blood thinners and those who have bleeding disorders. Laser surgery can correct an enlarged prostate.

    Why Is This Important

An enlarged prostate can cause two main symptoms of the lower urinary tract: voiding and urinary retention. Prior to this research, some experts believed surgery did not help men with urinary retention. However, the trial found both prostate procedures are effective for treating both voiding symptoms and urinary retention.

Although previous research suggested that the laser procedure would lead to fewer complications and a reduced hospital stay compared to TURP, this was not seen in the study. The new findings from Bristol suggest hospitals who already perform TURP do not necessarily need to invest in equipment and training for the ThuVARP laser procedure. Patients can be reassured that either surgical option is safe and effective. The researchers say new treatment approaches should continue to be compared with TURP, as NICE guidelines recommend.

What Happens After Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate

    • Tissue removed during surgery will be tested in the laboratory for any abnormal findings.
    • The patient will be seen by the doctor following surgery to monitor recovery and to repeat tests, such as urinary flow rate, bladder scan, and symptom score. These tests gauge the effectiveness of the surgery. Typically, patients are seen at six weeks and six months after surgery.
    • The use of pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible can help improve problems with urinary incontinence.

What Can I Expect After The Surgery

Some patients may be able to go home on the same day of the surgery, but you will need someone else to drive you home. Otherwise, the average stay in the hospital is about one day. The catheter will be removed before you go home. In some patients with compromised bladder function or those with severe urinary symptoms, the catheter may be left in for a longer time. These patients are taught how to look after the catheter and can still be discharged the day after the surgery.

Most patients experience an almost immediate improvement in their urinary symptoms. You are expected to see mild bleeding in the urine. You are encouraged to drink more water at home and to avoid straining when opening your bowels.

You may experience burning when urinating and also the frequent urge to pass urine. Uncommonly, some patients may not get to the toilet in time and leak urine . This is because the bladder needs some time to adjust to having less obstruction and to relax itself. A short course of bladder calming medications can sometimes help with these symptoms.

The time to full recovery depends also on patient factors such as other medical conditions and age. In general, you are advised to do only light duties for the first 2 weeks after surgery and slowly increase your activity level back to normal by 6 weeks time.
