Is There Any Downtime After Tulsa

In almost all cases, patients are discharged almost immediately following their procedure to recover at home. Based on Dr. Kasraeians recommendations and the nature of the case, patients may require antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and/or pain medication. However, most men find that discomfort after TULSA-PRO is mild and temporary. Generally speaking, patients should plan to take about 3 5 days off work after a TULSA Procedure. Within a few days, most men feel ready and able to resume light activities, including desk work. It may take up to 2 3 months for bowel and urinary function to return to the patients normal baseline after TULSA-PRO.

TORONTO, Jan. 18, 2022 — Profound Medical Corp. , a commercial-stage medical device company that develops and markets customizable, incision-free therapies for the ablation of diseased tissue, today announced that the first patients have been treated in the Level 1 CAPTAIN trial.

CAPTAIN is a prospective, multi-centre randomized controlled trial of 201 patients aimed at comparing the safety and efficacy of the TULSA procedure with radical prostatectomy in men with organ-confined, intermediate-risk, Gleason Score 7 prostate cancer. In the CAPTAIN trial, 134 patients will be randomized to receive one or two TULSA procedures and 67 patients will be randomized to receive RP. The trial is expected to take place at eight or more sites in the United States and two in Canada. Of those, six sites have been activated to date and are currently recruiting patients.

CAPTAIN is a post-market study intended to support coverage by payors, said Arun Menawat, Profounds CEO and Chairman. Notably, this will be the first Level 1 study ever conducted comparing an emerging technology head-to-head with RP in men with prostate cancer. So, if successful, in addition to helping advance our reimbursement strategy, we believe the data generated from CAPTAIN has the potential to drive much broader awareness and adoption of TULSA-PRO®.

Tulsa Treats Prostate Cancer With No Incisions Surgery Or Radiation

Prostate cancer is a slow-growing but nefarious disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2021 alone, more than 248,000 new prostate cancer cases will be diagnosed, making it the most common cancer in men. It also represents more than 13 percent of all cancer cases in the U.S.

Traditional treatment options such as surgery to remove the prostate and radiation therapy are effective at getting rid of tumors. However, for patients with localized, low-risk and some with intermediate-risk prostate cancer, the benefits of removing a tumor are often counterbalanced by the life-altering side effects of treatment. Even in the hands of a skilled surgeon or oncologist, erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence are possible following prostate cancer surgery.

For some patients who choose active surveillance, which involves closely monitoring the tumor to make sure it isnt getting worse, the frequent checkups and knowledge that they have cancer can prove stressful.

But now there is another treatment option, and UT Southwestern is one of just a few U.S. centers that offers it.

Transurethral ultrasound ablation is a new outpatient procedure that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2019 for prostate tissue ablation after the TACT clinical trial. Future Of Prostate Cancer Treatment

For some men, removing the entire prostate may no longer be necessary. As we learn more about the disease and how to reliably map it inside the prostate with advanced imaging, opportunities arise to treat the disease at a cancer-focus level rather than the entire prostate.

Today, insurance coverage may vary since this novel therapy is not yet a standard of care. As the procedure becomes more widely known and available, we expect the amount of coverage to increase. Before the procedure, patients can discuss their coverage with our financial counseling team to estimate potential out of pocket costs.

Since the procedure is so new and only a few centers offer it, we do not have long-term data to quote specific outcome trends. We are joining a multicenter registry to collaborate with other institutions that offer TULSA for prostate cancer so we can share in that information as the database grows.

Mechanism Of Action And Aim Of Tulsa

The aim of TULSA-PRO is to systematically destroy diseased tissue in the prostate via the application of ultrasound energy. Instead of radiation, the mechanism of action is based on the precisely targeted and controlled delivery of ultrasound beams to heat and effectively ablate the tissue in a circumscribed ablation target area. The desired effect is the destruction of the targeted tissue via coagulation and not vaporization.

With the patient under general anesthesia, the ultrasound energy is applied to the diseased tissue with an applicator that is inserted through the urethra to the prostate. The applicator is a very thin rod-shaped device outfitted with a linear array of 10 independently controllable ultrasound transducers. Turning the applicator to various degrees enables your doctor to reach any area within the prostate.

Final planning for the procedure is carried using real-time MRI scans. This means that MRI scans of the prostate and its neighboring structures are generated while the applicator is in position. This allows your doctor to precisely demarcate the ablation target area.
