Cranberry juice may also cause problems with certain blood thinning medications. If you take blood thinners, be sure to speak with your doctor about how much cranberry juice is safe to drink.
Cranberries And Prostate Health
Limited research has suggested cranberry may be beneficial for managing an enlarged prostate and prostatitis. One study included men who had lower urinary tract symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Study participants who took 1,500 mg of dried powdered cranberries every day for six months experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms when compared with men who took a placebo.
In another study, rats with chronic bacterial prostatitis were given either cranberry, ciprofloxacin, E. coli extract, or no treatment . Rats given cranberry showed a significant reduction in inflammation of the prostate and in bacterial growth when compared with the control group.
Its also possible that cranberries may help with side effects following a prostate biopsy, which may include trouble urinating and urinary urgency. Proanthocyanidins are potent antioxidants, and their immune-boosting abilities can help avoid possible infection after a prostate biopsy.

How Men Can Benefit From Cranberries

Cranberries have emerged as a potential tool in improving mens prostate health. Online personal trainer Andrew Cate looks at the latest research.
BackgroundProstate health is a significant issue, with benign prostatic hyperplasia one of the most common medical conditions affecting older men.
BPH is a non-cancerous swelling, or enlargement of the prostate gland, and is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms such as slow urine stream and incomplete bladder emptying.
The incidence of lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH increases dramatically as men get older. If left untreated, BPH can have a negative impact on quality of life, and may also lead to various medical complications.
This has lead to increasing interest and further study in the role of dietary supplements to help improve prostate health.
The researchResearch has suggested that cranberry fruits, juices and extracts may have anti-inflammatory properties. According to recent research published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the protective effect of cranberries toward urinary tract health may also extend to mens prostates.
The study involved 42 men with prostate health issues or lower urinary tract symptoms and compared a control group with a cranberry group, who consumed 1500 milligrams of cranberry fruit powder every day for 6 months.
Lifestyle implicationCranberries are available whole, dried, as juice, and powdered in various supplement forms.

Clinical Relevance Prostatic Carcinoma
Prostatic carcinoma represents the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, especially in countries with high sociodemographic index. The malignant cells commonly originate from the peripheral zone, although carcinomas may arise from the central and transition zones too. It is still debatable that the latter tumors may present with lower malignant potential.
However the proximity of the peripheral zone to the neurovascular bundle that surrounds the prostate may facilitate spread along perineural and lymphatic pathways, thus increasing the metastatic potential of these tumors. Malignant cells may invade adjacent structures and/ or lymphatic and blood vessel routes to give distant metastases. Prostate carcinoma also commonly spreads via the Batson venous plexus to the vertebral bodies and cause skeletal metastases.
A DRE may reveal a hard, irregular prostate gland. In most cases the serum PSA values will be increased. However, due to the peripherally-advancing tumor, symptoms may be minimal, as obstruction occurs usually at late stages. One should also keep in mind that the high incidence of prostate carcinoma is found in elderly men, who may already have symptoms due to BPH.

Is Drinking A Lot Of Water Good For Your Prostate
Doctors recommend drinking six to eight glasses of water daily. You may need more water when you exercise or work in a hot environment. Drinking more than the required amount can increase your trips to the bathroom. Hydration is necessary, but do not overdo it.
For prostate problems, limit water intake before going to bed at night. This will keep you from waking up at night to urinate repeatedly.
What Drinks To Avoid For Your Prostate Problems
You should avoid drinks that increase your urination. These can dehydrate you. These include caffeine-containing drinks such as coffee, green tea, black tea and soft drinks or sodas. Alcohol can also dehydrate you. Hence, limit its intake or consider avoiding it completely. People who avoid alcohol have seen improvements in their prostate problems.

Cranberries And Blood Pressure
Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture in Maryland report that cranberry juice can lower blood pressure in healthy adults when they drink it every day. Given that about 75 million American adults have high blood pressure or roughly one-third of that populationthis discovery about cranberries can be helpful for heart health in many individuals.
In the study, 56 healthy volunteers drank two either 8-ounce glasses of cranberry juice or a matched placebo daily for eight weeks. The study was highly controlled, as all the participants had their meals provided for them throughout the entire study so body weight could be managed.
Although the reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure declined by an average of only 3 mmHg in the study, the authors rated the diastolic drop as significant when compared with placebo. Thats because the diastolic number is less than the systolic, and so a 3 mmHg reduction is more meaningful.
According to , an author of the study, If are trying to reduce blood pressure through diet, low-calorie cranberry juice would be something that would be good and healthful to include in that diet, especially if you choose a low-calorie juice over a less healthful beverage.
This is not the only study to find a heart-related benefit for cranberries.

What Is A Uti And How Do You Get Them
A urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection that causes painful urination and the feeling that your bladder is never completely empty. It can also cause fever and low back pain.
Adhesion of E. coli bacteria to cells lining the urinary tract is the first step in the development of a UTI, and E. coli is the cause of about 85% of UTIs and 90% of cases of acute kidney infections. The good news is that cranberry extract does a remarkable job of preventing the adhesion of E. coli bacteria to the cells that line the urinary tract.
According to researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, a UTI starts when E. coli invade the bladder and penetrate a protective coating of the superficial cells that line the bladder. Once the E. coli is established in the bladder lining, the stage is set for infection.5

So Drinking Cranberry Juice Can Lower Your Psa Level But What Does That Mean
As we have noted numerous times before, there are all sorts of things that can be done to lower ones PSA level, but knowing whether these effects are clinically meaningful is a very different issue.
In a new paper just published by Student et al. , the authors have shown that prostate cancer patients who were scheduled to undergo radical prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer could lower their PSA levels by drinking cranberry juice for 30 days prior to their surgery. But what does this actually mean?
Student et al. randomized 64 patients to drinking the cranberry juice or to drinking a placebo for an average of 30 days prior to their radical prostatectomy. Here is a summary of what they found:
- Compared to the men taking the placebo, the men drinking the cranberry juice
- Experienced a drop of 22.5 percent in their PSA levels prior to their surgery.
- Exhibited a trend to down-regulation of urinary beta-microseminoprotein and serum gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase
- Exhibited a trend to upregulation of IGF-1
- Showed no changes in prostate tissue markers or in composition and concentration of phenolics in urine
The authors conclude that
Daily consumption of a powdered cranberry fruit lowered serum PSA in patients with prostate cancer. The whole fruit contains constituents that may regulate the expression of androgen-responsive genes.

Exercise And Lose Weight
Exercising and losing weight are some of the best things you can do to promote prostate health. Many studies show that moderate or vigorous exercise reduces risk of BPH and urinary tract symptoms and helps with prostatitis as well. Exercise also benefits your cardiovascular health and can help prevent other health and sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction.
If you are overweight, losing weight is one of the most important natural changes you can make in improving your prostate health, whether your concerns are cancer, BPH or prostatitis. A study published in the Journal of Urology found that overweight men, especially men with a high amount of abdominal fat, have an increased risk of BPH. If you are looking to shrink the prostate, losing weight can help you reduce your prostate size and help relieve annoying and frustrating urinary symptoms. On top of that, weight loss can reduce your risk for prostate cancer and help relieve prostatitis, too.
