Other diagnostic tests , such as uroflowmetry and cystourethroscopy, have been used in patients with LUTS. However, their reliability varies considerably, making it difficult to base a diagnosis solely on the results of these techniques. However, they can be used in conjunction with digital rectal examination to estimate prostate volume, although prostate size does not have a significant bearing on the degree of obstruction or symptoms. Postvoid residual volume also has a high degree of intrinsic variability, which limits the value of this test.

Urinary Symptoms Linked To Sexual Dysfunction

In this study, published in the current issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers studied 2,115 men between the ages of 40 and 79. The men completed questionnaires about their sexual function and urinary tract symptoms every two years.

Researchers found that each of the indicators of sexual function was inversely related to the severity of urinary tract symptoms reported by the men. As the men’s urinary symptoms increased, their level of sexual function decreased.

After adjusting for age, urinary tract symptoms resulting from an enlarged prostate that were most strongly associated with sexual dysfunction were:

  • A feeling of urgency
  • Needing to get up multiple times at night to urinate
  • A weak urine stream

These symptoms were associated with:

  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Sexual satisfaction problems

However, the association with men’s urinary tract symptoms and sexual dysfunction diminished with advancing age. No association between these symptoms and most sexual problems were found in men over age 70.

Researchers say that because both of these conditions are common in aging man, it may be very difficult to see if a true association exists outside of an age-related one.

“This observation shows there may be a common cause that someday may prove amenable to medical treatments that could be effective for treating both conditions,” says researcher Steven Jacobsen, MD, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., in a news release.

The usual dose is 10mg. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dose, depending on how well it works and how often you take it.

The treatment of BPH¹ varies. When diagnosing BPH, doctors can use a specially-designed survey to determine what symptoms youre experiencing and how much your quality of life is affected by it.

If symptoms are mild or do not affect your quality of life much, your doctor might delay treatment and see how the symptoms progress while providing advice about lifestyle changes to manage symptoms. Some changes might include reducing caffeine and alcohol and changing some medications.

Some people’s symptoms are more severe and affect their quality of life, or their mild symptoms might worsen.

In these situations, you may need medication. Your doctor may prescribe several types of medicines depending on how bad your symptoms are and any allergies or other conditions you may have.

This swelling tends to compress the urethra, limiting urine flow and causing symptoms known as lower urinary tract symptoms . BPH is a condition that many men encounter with aging.

Most of the symptoms of BPH are associated with urinary function. They are:

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Urinary retention inability to empty the bladder
  • An intense urge to urinate, even shortly after urinating
  • A weak urine stream or an interrupted urine stream
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination

While BPH itself is not a directly linked cause of sexual problems, most men that suffer from it do indeed find it affects sexual performance. Some common sexual side effects of BPH are:

  • Inability to maintain an erection

In most surgeries, sexual activity tends to return to normal within a year¹¹ if the surgery affects it. This is provided that no rare complications like nerve damage occur.

However, the consistent observation is that ED and symptomatic BPE were significantly associated with increasing age .

Prostate Cancer Treatments And Erectile Dysfunction

Overcoming erectile dysfunction after cancer is possible as long as the nerves were not destroyed during the treatment process. However, even though the process of recovery is possible, it may be slow. On average, it takes 4 to 24 months to reach a full erection during sexual intercourse.

There are several treatments for ED such as medicines, devices, penile injections and implants, suppositories, and pumps. Your doctor can run through the pros and cons of each treatment with you.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition where the prostate gland is inflamed and tender. Prostatitis is often very painful. Men may experience pain when peeing, pain in the groin, genitals, or pelvic area. Thankfully, prostatitis is a noncancerous condition that is treatable with certain medications.

There are four different types of prostatitis and each comes with its own set of symptoms.

Acute bacterial prostatitis

This is a prostate bacterial infection that often happens very quickly. Bacteria may have found its way to your prostate through your urinary tract. This form of prostatitis can be very severe and painful. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, it’s best to immediately contact your doctor.

Symptoms may include an emergency sense of having to pee, but only a little bit of urine actually comes out. Additional symptoms include chills, high fever, difficulty peeing, cloudy urine, and pain behind the scrotum.

Chronic bacterial prostatitis

Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis

The Initial Causes Does Enlarged Prostate Cause Erectile Dysfunction

One of the first symptoms of prostate issues is pain or tenderness in the groin or lower back. This can be the result of a noncancerous condition called enlarged prostatic tissue, or it could be an infection of the bladder. In either case, its important to see a doctor as soon as possible. If youre suffering from prostate pain, you may want to consider reducing your caffeine intake.

Another symptom of a potentially enlarged prostate is difficulty starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. These symptoms are not serious, but theyre still alarming. Most men put up with an enlarged prostate for years before seeking medical attention, but they typically seek treatment as soon as they notice symptoms. Even if you dont have symptoms, its worth getting checked to determine if you have any prostate issues.

If you experience nightly bathroom runs, you may be experiencing an enlarged prostate. You may be having difficulty starting a stream of urine, or you may even be dribbling or leaking during the day. These problems arent life-threatening, but can become a nuisance. You should not ignore these signs and seek treatment as soon as you notice them. If you feel any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor.

Does An Enlarged Prostate Affect A Man Sexually

Enlarged prostate, or BPH, is one of the most common urological conditions that a man can encounter as he gets older. Statistics show that 50% of men over the age of 50 will have BPH, then 60% over 60, and so forth, increasing by 10% with every decade of life.

As men get BPH, they will often start noticing some significant disturbances in their urine flow like a weakened or straining to urinate, waking up at night to urinate, and increase in urinary frequency and urgency. But do these disturbances in urine flow affect their sexual function? Most of the time, they do not lead to sexual dysfunction.

While there are relationships between BPH and erectile dysfunction, in general, these relationships are due to patients with BPH who may have other numerous medical conditions that are also associated with erectile dysfunction like hypertension, lipid abnormalities, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

However, some of the therapies that we offer for BPH, including pills and surgeries, have significant sexual dysfunction side effects including erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory dysfunction. Furthermore, medications used for the management of enlarged prostates may lead to sexual dysfunction, which may be problematic for patients who are still sexually active.

Surgical Treatments For Bph

While many doctors claim to treat prostate enlargement with surgery, such claims are almost always related to improving urinary function. Since the prostate surrounds the urethra, symptoms of BPH almost always involve urinary function. If a man has severe urinary issues or blockage, surgery may help.

Some doctors recommend removing the prostate to resolve the urinary issues in severe cases. The prostatectomy will likely resolve the urinary issues, but the surgerys side effects will surely deteriorate the mans quality of life.

Surgery should never be the first choice to relieve problems associated with BPH. Any urologist recommending surgery as a first-line treatment for BPH is not providing patients with the best advice. Every surgery has side effects. Some can be minor and others life-altering. Many solutions can make BPH more tolerable without destroying a mans quality of life.
