The procedure takes an average of 60 to 90 minutes under general anaesthetic. A thin laser fibre is positioned within the laserscope and is passed up through the urethra to deliver the treatment.

Two procedures to treat men with enlarged prostates are both effective, new research has shown.

A benign enlarged prostate is not cancer and is not usually a serious threat to health. But it is common in men over 50 and some need surgery to treat troublesome urinary symptoms caused by the growing prostate. The most common procedure is transurethral resection of the prostate which is usually successful but can lead to complications such as bleeding in some men.

The UNBLOCS trial compared the effectiveness of TURP to a new laser procedure which might reduce a patients hospital stay and cause fewer side effects. The thulium laser, ThuVARP, vaporises excess prostate. Men who needed a prostate operation were asked to consent to either procedure without knowing which one they would receive.

One year later, men in both groups were satisfied with their surgery. They reported similar improvements in their urinary symptoms and quality of life. There was no difference between the two procedures in terms of hospital stay or complications. However, men in the TURP group achieved a faster urinary flow rate . TURP was also slightly more cost-effective and faster to perform than the laser procedure.

An enlarged prostate can cause two main symptoms of the lower urinary tract: voiding and urinary retention. Prior to this research, some experts believed surgery did not help men with urinary retention. Although previous research suggested that the laser procedure would lead to fewer complications and a reduced hospital stay compared to TURP, this was not seen in the study. I Had Laser Prostate surgery on Dec 13 and the first week was pretty rough. Pain, nausea, vomiting and could not pee at all after the catheter was removed the first time Had to get another cath in for a couple of days. Had burning pain for 17 days. The first day i could pee, I went 17 times in 18 hours. I still have frequency, but every day is better now. Almost no pain or burning. I think everyone’s experience is different. They say it will get better in time. Hope this helps. Had no problem getting back night/morning erections. Even got one with the catheter in. That was rather bizarre. That can be a side effect: Impotence.

PVP two years ago. Outpatient. Excellent results. Quite painless, some blood in urine for a few days as expected. No catheters or Foley bags for me for the last two years. Normal urination for TWO years and counting. Considering how many posts are showing depressingly negative results, I hesitate to post one so positive since it might result in more folks having negative post op experience. Depends on the surgeon, I suppose.
