Frequent Urination At Night
You may notice that urination is normal during the day, but you have to go to the toilet more often at night. The doctors then speak of nocturia. Nocturia is the need for urinating more than two times at night.
The first thing to check is your eating habits: do you drink evenly throughout the day or do you drink more in the evening? Drinking alcohol in the evening can have a diuretic effect at bedtime.
In relatively rare cases, the hidden disease is responsible for frequent urination :
- Heart failure
- Certain medications that have a drainage effect
What helps with frequent urination at night? If a hidden disease is found, it should be immediately treated. Avoiding coffee and alcohol in the evening reduces the urge to use the toilet. If taking medication that can cause the urge to urinate, talk to your doctor about whether it can be taken at a different time of day. If you have swollen legs, put them up early before going to bed to give your body a chance to get rid of the water before going to bed. Also, herbal dietary supplements can be considered.
Diagnosis And Treatment For Prostatitis
The diagnosis is clinical involving a few tests that help in identifying the cause and guide in the management of the problem, said Dr Bivek Kumar, Urologist, Andrologist and Uro- Surgeon, Apollo Spectra, Koramangala, Bangalore. Diagnostic tests might include the following:
- Urine and prostate fluid tests
- Expressed Prostatic Secretions
- PSA Levels
- Cystoscopy a detailed look into the urethra, prostate, and bladder with a cystoscope which is a long, thin telescope with a light at the end.
A detailed clinical examination and a questionnaire can help identify the severity of the symptoms and guide in treatment.
Treatment is highly individualised as every scenario is different, hence, the history and examinations are very important to guide the therapy. Treatment options may include:
- Antibiotics which are specific for the region
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Prostatic massages and specialised physiotherapy may help relax the nearby muscles. In very rare cases, surgery on either the urethra or prostate may be needed which gives instant relief.
Care after treatment
A regular follow-up is warranted. Prostatitis is not easy to treat. Antibiotics, if used, may have trouble reaching and killing bacteria deep in the prostate. Hence, individualised medication protocol is necessary as every persons case is different, added Dr Kumar.

Symptoms Of Benign Prostate Enlargement
The prostate is a small gland, located in the pelvis, between the penis and bladder.
If the prostate becomes enlarged, it can place pressure on the bladder and the urethra, which is the tube that urine passes through.
This can affect how you pee and may cause:
- difficulty starting to pee
- a frequent need to pee
- difficulty fully emptying your bladder
In some men, the symptoms are mild and do not need treatment. In others, they can be very troublesome.

Problems After Prostate Cancer Treatment
Many men get urinary problems as a side effect of their treatment. This is because prostate cancer treatment can damage the nerves and muscles that control when you urinate .
If youre starting treatment for prostate cancer, ask your doctor about the possible side effects. Each treatment can cause different urinary problems. Your chances of getting each side effect will depend on the treatment youre having, and on whether or not you had urinary problems before starting treatment.
If youve already had prostate cancer treatment and you have urinary problems, tell your doctor or nurse. They can suggest treatments and lifestyle changes to help manage them.
Depending on the type of problems youre having, ways to manage them can include lifestyle changes, pelvic floor muscle exercises, bladder retraining, medicines or surgery. For practical tips read our How to manage urinary problems guide.

Pregnancy Concerns And Fertility Problems
If you have diabetes and plan to become pregnant, its important to get your blood glucose levels close to your target range before you get pregnant. High blood glucose can harm your baby during the first weeks of pregnancy, even before you know youre pregnant.
If you have diabetes and are already pregnant, see your doctor as soon as possible to make a plan to manage your diabetes. Working with your health care team and following your diabetes management plan can help you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Conditions such as obesity and polycystic ovarian syndrome that are linked to diabetes can make it harder to conceive a child. Talk with a health care professional, such as a gynecologist or a fertility specialist, if youre having problems conceiving a child.

What Is Meant By Frequent Urination In Men
Urination is our bodys natural mechanism of getting rid of waste fluids. Your urinary tract includes your kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra.
Urine is produced in the kidneys where the waste and toxins are filtered from the blood. Then the urine flows through the ureters and gets stored in the bladder. Through the urethra, the urine is passed from the bladder and out of our bodies. On average, a person urinates nearly 4-8 times during the day.
Frequent urination in men is exactly what the name entails. It is majorly a symptom of an underlying condition that causes a person to pass urinate several times throughout a day. In this condition, a man experiences a reduced ability to hold urine in the bladder and an increased urge to pass urine.
Frequent urination is often associated with an underlying health condition. It can even compel you to wake up several times in the night to urinate. The condition in which your bladder forces you to wake up in the middle of the night is known as nocturia.

Questions Your Doctor Will Ask
If you decide to make an appointment to consult your urologist regarding nocturia, the doctor will likely have multiple questions for you in order to properly diagnose. Having the answers to the following questions ready will help you and your doctor quickly develop the right treatment plan:
The more detail you have, the more helpful it is for the physician in making a diagnosis and finding the root cause of the issue.
Bottom Line: Nocturia should be investigated to determine its cause, which may often be related to conditions other than urinary tract issues. Nighttime urination is not only bothersome, but may also pose real health risks. Chronically disturbed sleep can lead to a host of collateral wellness issues.
If you are routinely waking up at night to urinate, especially if it is happening more than once per night, we recommend setting up an appointment with your urologist. To set up an appointment with one of our physicians or to see a list of our locations, please contact us.

The Right Time For Grapes
Its important that if you eat too much fruit or drink grape juice while sitting at work all day, your problems with frequency will only get worse because there are no other means for fluid removal except through urination.
The ideal time to eat half a cup of grapes is before going to bed this helps with frequent awakening during the night.
This is also related to how I learned about grape consumption for other purposes and how it has helped me in the past.
If you try this, please let me know if it helps!
The Right Grapes?
I have personally tried grapes from a wide variety of supermarkets, and I can say that there is a difference some are better than others.
They may be either cheaper or more expensive, but sometimes they work when others dont.
The best ones Ive found so far come from German supermarkets, which often have very cheap deals on grape boxes of about 1kg for under $2 US dollars.
Some of these varieties are Aroma,Rosa, and Sweet Autumn. I also like ones called Rainbow Mix at times because theyre more colorful, and it seems this kind has better flavoring.
Best Times to Eat the Grapes? Here are some guidelines from my own experiences
If you are lactose intolerant, then avoid dairy products as these can also interfere with the absorption of the grape sugar into your body. Your system may mistake this for too much milk in general and try to expel more fluids through urination when you want less fluid to be removed.
Some Final Thoughts
Minimally Invasive Treatments For An Enlarged Prostate
When medications don’t help your enlarged prostate, several procedures can relieve symptoms — without surgery. They are performed in a doctor’s office. “These procedures use various types of heat energy to shrink a portion of the prostate,” explains Westney. “They are very effective.”
TUMT : This therapy for mild to moderate blockage reduces urinary frequency, urgency, straining, and intermittent flow — but does not correct any bladder-emptying problems. In this procedure, computer-regulated microwaves are used to heat portions within the prostate to destroy select tissue. A cooling system protects the wall of the urethra during the procedure. TUMT is performed in a doctor’s office and requires only topical anesthesia and pain medications.
Possible side effects include painful urination for several weeks. Temporary urgency and frequency of urination is also possible. There may be less semen ejaculated. Many men must have this procedure repeated, either because symptoms return or do not improve.
TUNA : This procedure also destroys prostate tissue to improve urine flow and relieve symptoms. It involves heating the tissue with high-frequency radiowaves transmitted by needles inserted directly into the prostate . The procedure does not require a hospital stay. Possible side effects include painful, urgent, or frequent urination for a few weeks.

Bladder Training And Exercises
Other treatments address frequent urination rather than an underlying cause.
Kegel exercises: Regular daily exercises, often done around pregnancy, can strengthen the muscles of the pelvis and urethra and support the bladder. For best results, perform Kegel exercises 10 to 20 times per set, three times a day, for at least 4 to 8 weeks.
Biofeedback: Used alongside Kegel exercises, biofeedback therapy enables the patient to become more aware of how their body functions. This increased awareness can help the patient improve their control of their pelvic muscles.
Bladder training: This involves training the bladder to hold urine longer. Training usually lasts 2 to 3 months.
Monitoring fluid intake: This may show that drinking a lot at certain times is the main cause of frequent urination.
Why It Happens Here Are The Major Reasons Of Frequent Urination In Men:
There can be various reasons behind frequent urination in men. They are listed below-
Diabetes: There are two types of diabetes . Type 1 and Type 2 and both of them effect the urination. Medicines taken by patients of high blood pressure may sometimes cause result in excessive fluid build-up in the kidneys leading to frequent urination.
Prostate Conditions: An enlarged prostate gland, a phenomenon that is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH also makes the walls of the urinary bladder irritated causing frequent urination in men.
Infection in the urinary tract can also be a major cause of frequent urination in men.
Overactive Bladder Syndrome: This is another major cause of frequent urination is caused by involuntary contractions of the urinary bladder even if it is not full.
Excessive intake of alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners citrus foods irritate the walls of the urinary bladder causing frequent urination.

Should I Be Worried If I Have These Conditions And Frequent Urination
If you ever have a symptom that is outside of whats normal for your body, reach out to your healthcare provider. In some cases, pregnancy, for example, frequent urination is completely normal and nothing to worry about. However, in some conditions, your caregiver may want to know if you are urinating much more than you typically do. Theres a very wide range of conditionswith varying levels of seriousnessthat could cause frequent urination. It is always safe to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider.
How Do I Stop/treat Frequent Urination
Its very vital to seek medical help if you have frequent urination to establish its cause. From there, you will know how this condition can be treated.
For example, if it is caused by diabetes, then the aim of treatment is to keep blood sugar to normal levels. If it is due to a urinary tract infection, then the treatment will include antibiotics and pain relievers.
These drugs relax the muscles of the urinary tract, promoting normal urine flow.
NOTE: While these drugs treat the symptoms, they do not address the cause. On top of that, they also have many nasty side effects which you can read about here.
Natural supplements like saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol bind to the prostate and help reduce its swelling. Antioxidants like quercetin and turmeric protect your prostate from injury and inflammation.

What Causes Sharp Pain In Right Kidney Capsule
Kidney infection or pyelonephritis which is common in all age groups, may also lead to this pain. The infection in the right kidney may cause inflammation of the kidney and can lead to stretching of the capsule. Severe injury can result in bleeding within the right kidney, which may cause sharp pain.
Overactive Bladder In Men: Causes Diagnosis And Treatment
What is an overactive bladder?
Overactive bladder is a relatively common condition. Typical symptoms include frequent urination, frequent nighttime urination, persistent urge to urinate, and urine leakage or incontinence.
An estimated 33 million Americans have OAB, reports the Urology Care Foundation, and as many as 30 percent of men experience symptoms. Its possible that even more men have the condition, but never seek help. If you suspect you have OAB, talk to your doctor. There are a variety of treatments options that may help.

What If My Prostatitis Is Not Caused By Infection
Because we do not understand what causes prostatitis without infection, it can be hard to treat. Your doctor might try an antibiotic to treat a hidden infection. Other treatments are aimed at making you feel better. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, and hot soaking baths may help you feel better. Some men get better by taking medicines that help the way the bladder or prostate gland work. These medicines include oxybutynin, doxazosin, prazosin, tamsulosin and terazosin.

Enlarged Prostate Treatments In The Pipeline
Researchers continue to investigate new therapies for enlarged prostates. “Another category of drugs is under development,” says Slawin. “We’ve come a long way in treating BPH. It’s no longer the life-threatening disease it once was. Now, in treatment, we’re working on quality of life issuesââ¬Â¦ reducing side effects of treatment.”
Also being studied is a procedure called water-induced thermotherapy , an experimental procedure that involves destroying excess prostate tissue utilizing heated water and an air-filled balloon, which protects normal prostate tissue. The procedure is performed with only local anesthesia. Results may not be fully apparent for three to four months. However, preliminary studies examining WIT have shown positive results, with a near doubling in urine flow. However, the American Urological Association has not thus far endorsed WIT as a viable treatment option for symptoms of BPH.

How Do I Know If Its Frequent Urination
The characteristics of frequent urination are easy to spot. If you feel the need to pee more than four to eight times in one day, odds are that you have issues with frequent urination. Your healthcare provider may ask you a few questions to confirm this symptom. These could include questions like:
- What medicines are you taking?
- How much fluid do you usually drink?
- Are you drinking more than usual?
- Do you drink alcohol or caffeine?
During a visit, the healthcare provider may also take a urine sample to test for bacteria and white blood cells. UTIs are typically discovered this way. An ultrasound could be used to look for tumors or other structural issues that might be causing frequent urination. Another test you may have is a cystoscopy, which is used to look inside your bladder.
Why Does Diabetes Cause Frequent Urination
Insulin is a hormone that draws glucose or sugar into the cells to use as energy. This can result in highly elevated blood sugar levels.
Too much sugar in your blood is extremely taxing on the kidneys, which work to process that sugar. When the kidneys arent up to the job, much of that glucose is eliminated from the body through your urine.
This process also flushes out valuable hydrating fluids from your body, often leaving people with diabetes peeing frequently as well as dehydrated.
Early on, you may not even notice that youre urinating more often than normal. One of the key warning signs, however, should be if frequent urination starts to wake you up from sleep and deplete your energy levels.
