Researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, and Department of Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health, Omaha, USA evaluated the effects of the extract from Annona Muricata/Graviola on cytotoxicity, cell metabolism, cancer-associated protein/gene expression, tumorigenicity, and metastatic properties of pancreatic cancer cells. The study found that Graviola induced necrosis of pancreatic cancer cells by inhibiting cellular metabolism and also inhibited multiple signaling pathways that regulate metabolism, cell cycle, survival, and metastatic properties in pancreatic cancer cells.
Soursop Is Said To Kill Cancer Cells But The Fda Says It’s A Bogus Cure
In 2008, the Federal Trade Commission in the United States stated that use of soursop to treat cancer was “bogus”, and there was “no credible scientific evidence” that extract of soursop “can prevent, cure, or treat cancer of any kind.” Also in 2008, a UK court case relating to the sale of Triamazon, a soursop product, resulted in the criminal conviction of a man offering to treat people for cancer. A spokesman for the council that instigated the action stated, “it is as important now as it ever was that people are protected from those peddling unproven products with spurious claims as to their effects.”
Then eight years later, a study of annona muricata leaves were fed to mice with cancer in the lab. In that study, soursop extract worked to stop cancer growth, but further research is needed to understand the potential effects on humans. There have been a series of similar studies where the extract has been shown to slow or reduce the tumors in the lab testing prostate, breast, lung and colon cancers. None of these have yet been done on humans and oncologists want cancer patients to know that herbal supplements are no replacement for traditional therapies.

Scientists have studied graviola for many kinds of cancers. Findings from lab studies have been promising. But they havenât tested graviola on people to know if the results will hold up.
Breast cancer. In one study, graviola leaf extract shrank breast tumors in mice. Other studies looked at the effect of graviola fruit extract on a protein called epidermal growth factor receptor . This protein sits on the surface of cells and helps them grow and divide. Some breast cancer cells have too much EGFR. The cells grow faster and are harder to treat. Graviola parts have been used as antimicrobial and antiparasitic agents in traditional medicine. Examples are provided according to the year published, except for antimalarials which will be discussed at the end of this section.
Bories et al. studied methanol extracts of two species of Annona, including muricata and cherimolia, for their ability to inhibit growth of the parasites Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomonas vaginalis, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Molinema dessetae, and Artemia salina . Results were expressed in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration , compared to reference compounds metronidazole and ivermectin . The results with crude extracts showed that the A. cherimolia extract performed better overall in these tests and both extracts showed only weak activity against the protozoans E. histolytica and T. vaginalis but strongly inhibited the M. dessetae filaria larvae, although at doses still an order of magnitude or so higher than the reference ivermectin compound. Nevertheless, this last result prompted the authors to perform fractionation to identify compounds with effectiveness against M. dessetae, leading to the identification of seven acetogenins with filaricidal activity, four of which displayed LD50 values equal to or lower than the ivermectin reference .
Impact Of Graviola On Leukemia
Researchers from the University of Yaoundé, Cameroon evaluated the in vitro anti-proliferative effects and apoptotic events of Annona muricata extracts on leukemia HL-60 cells as well as to quantify its phenols content.
