Your doctor will likely:
- Monitor your PSA levels. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate that is often elevated in patients with prostate cancer. In patients being treated for prostate cancer, rising PSA levels over time may be a sign of disease recurrence or progression. The results of PSA level monitoring are usually used along with other tests to determine the effectiveness of Zytiga.

Liver Disease Or Liver Problems
Zytiga has been linked to liver damage, hepatitis, liver failure, and death. People who had liver disease or liver problems in the past have a greater risk of liver damage if they take Zytiga.
Your doctor will check how your liver is working before you start Zytiga. Theyll continue to check your liver function every two weeks for three months, and then every month after that. If you develop liver problems during treatment, you may need to stop taking Zytiga for a time or take a lower dose.
People with moderate liver disease should start with a lower dose of Zytiga. People with severe liver disease shouldnt take Zytiga.
Taking more than the recommended dosage of Zytiga can increase your risk for common and serious side effects. This list does not include all possible overdose symptoms.
Combination Radiation And Endocrine Therapy
Sometimes, patients receive hormone therapy in combination with external beam radiation therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. This treatment uses a high-energy X-ray machine to direct radiation to the prostate tumor. For patients with intermediate or high risk prostate cancer, studies show this combination is more effective at slowing the disease than endocrine therapy or radiation therapy alone.
Radiation can also come in the form of a monthly intravenous drug called Xofigo. Xofigo is approved for use in men who have advanced prostate cancer that has spread only to the bones. Candidates should have also received therapy designed to lower testosterone. The drug works by binding to minerals within bones to deliver radiation directly to bone tumors. A study of 809 men showed that those taking Xofigo lived an average of 3 months longer than those taking a placebo.

Study Design And Eligibility
This was a retrospective, observational cohort study conducted at multiple sites in Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom . The data collection period for each patient ranged from the initial date of prostate cancer diagnosis up to the date of data collection. The start of AAP treatment was considered as baseline. Data from eligible patients treated with AAP were extracted from their medical records and entered into electronic case report forms .

Zytiga and Provenge
Theres no interaction between Zytiga and Provenge . Provenge is a type of vaccine that makes your immune system more active in fighting prostate cancer.
One clinical study looked at how peoples immune systems responded to Provenge therapy. An immune system response shows that Provenge is working. The results of this study were similar in people who took Zytiga with Provenge and in people who used Zytiga after taking Provenge.
However, current treatment guidelines dont recommend using Zytiga and Provenge together. Instead, the guidelines recommended taking one drug or the other as a possible treatment.

Abiraterone Delays Metastatic Prostate Cancer Growth By 18 Months Extends Survival
ASCO PerspectiveFor men who are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, treatment has evolved into more effective approaches, first with chemotherapy and now with abiraterone, said Sumanta Kumar Pal, MD, ASCO Expert. This is good news because using abiraterone could help many people live longer with fairly few additional side effects.
CHICAGO Adding abiraterone acetate plus prednisone to standard hormonal therapy for men newly diagnosed with high-risk, metastatic prostate cancer lowers the chance of death by 38%. In a phase III clinical trial of 1,200 men, abiraterone also more than doubled the median time until the cancer worsened, from 14.8 months to 33 months. The study will be featured in a press briefing today and presented at the 2017 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.
There is a large unmet need to improve treatment for men with newly diagnosed metastatic cancer, who die of the disease within less than five years on average, said lead study author Karim Fizazi MD, PhD, head of the Department of Cancer Medicine at Gustave Roussy, University Paris-Sud in Villejuif, France. The benefit from early use of abiraterone we saw in this study is at least comparable to the benefit from docetaxel chemotherapy, which was observed in prior clinical trials, but abiraterone is much easier to tolerate, with many patients reporting no side effects at all.

Who Can Have Abiraterone
Abiraterone is a treatment for advanced prostate cancer. It is most commonly offered to men whose cancer has stopped responding to other types of hormone therapy. You may hear this called hormone-relapsed or castrate-resistant prostate cancer.
Abiraterone may be suitable if you have no symptoms or mild symptoms. Your hospital doctor may offer you abiraterone if you cant have chemotherapy, or you dont want to have it yet. Or you may be offered abiraterone if youve had a chemotherapy drug called docetaxel and your cancer has stopped responding to it.
If youve already had a type of hormone therapy called enzalutamide, abiraterone probably wont be an option. This is because research suggests that men who have already had one of these drugs dont respond so well to the other drug. However, if you get severe side effects from enzalutamide, you may be able to try abiraterone.

Earlier abiraterone

Uses That Are Not Approved

Nonmetastatic prostate cancer
Zytiga isnt FDA-approved to treat nonmetastatic prostate cancer. But the American Urological Association recommends Zytiga as an option for people if all of the following apply:

- Their risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer is high.
- They dont want or cant take standard therapy.
- Theyre unwilling to watch and wait under their doctors supervision.
In one clinical study, about half of the people who received Zytiga had nonmetastatic CRPC. In this group, the use of Zytiga with standard therapy didnt improve the rate of overall survival by a significant amount compared to standard therapy alone. But people with nonmetastatic prostate cancer did go longer without having a significant change in cancer growth or needing to change therapy.

The approval is based on Phase 3 data from the pivotal LATITUDE clinical trial, which found that in patients with metastatic high-risk CSPC, ZYTIGA® in combination with prednisone reduced the risk of death by 38 percent compared to placebos.
LATITUDE was a large global trial which produced impressive and clinically significant results in overall survival, said Karim Fizazi, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator and Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Institute Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France. Does Zytiga Affect My Testosterone Levels
Yes. Zytiga helps slow or stop the growth of prostate cancer by decreasing the amount of testosterone and other male hormones in your body. Zytiga lowers testosterone levels by blocking the production of other steroids that help create testosterone. It also lowers the levels of another important male hormone called dihydrotestosterone.
How Should I Take Zytiga
Zytiga is usually taken once per day while also taking a steroid 1 or 2 times per day. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions very carefully.
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
Your abiraterone dose needs may change if you switch to a different brand, strength, or form of this medicine. Avoid medication errors by using only the medicine your doctor prescribes.
Your steroid dose needs may change if you have an infection or are under stress. Do not change your dose or stop using your steroid medicine without your doctor’s advice.
Take this medicine with a full glass of water.
You may take Yonsa with or without food.
Take Zytiga on an empty stomach. Do not eat anything for at least 2 hours before or 1 hour after you take your dose.
Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often, and you may need frequent blood tests. If you have diabetes, your blood sugar should be checked carefully, especially if you take pioglitazone or repaglinide.
You should not stop using Zytiga or your steroid medicine suddenly. Follow your doctor’s instructions about tapering your prednisone dose.
