How To Become A Lung Cancer Advocate

Color Doppler Ultrasound for Prostate Cancer | Prostate Cancer Staging Guide

If youre considering becoming a lung cancer advocate, you have what it takes. All that is needed is a desire, and whatever time you have. Some people advocate full-time, while others spend an hour a month or less. Unfortunately, due to the lower survival rates, there are fewer lung cancer advocates than say, breast cancer survivor advocates. Yet you dont need to be a survivor to advocate. We need those who arent living with lung cancer day to day to fill in the gaps and raise awareness.

If youre living with lung cancer, taking care of yourself is most important. That said, much of the progress being made in lung cancer is due to changing the face of lung cancer. Once thought of a disease of smokers, the public is slowly learning that anyone can get lung cancer. People are realizing that young people, never smokers, in fact, anyone with lungs may get the disease.

Statistics alone are fairly meaningless. Not in their meaning, but in the support they generate. Its seeing the faces and hearing the stories of those living with the disease that is generating support not only in the public arena but among physicians and lung cancer researchers around the world.

An indirect benefit of being an advocate as a lung cancer patient is that people often learn how to better advocate for themselves through these activities. And practicing self-advocacy with lung cancer can not only help you feel more in control of your disease, but in some cases may improve outcomes as well.

Why Are Awareness Ribbons Important

Awareness ribbons create a community of people that are dedicated to one cause. The only way to create change is by taking action and these ribbons are a rallying call to make that difference!

Just like McDonalds has the golden arches and Nike has their infamous swoosh, you can see these small ribbons as a symbol, only in this case its for hope instead of Big Macs or gym shoes. Every time you wear a ribbon, whether its on a pin, shirt, tumbler, or giant banner, youre letting the world know that you want the world to be better, stronger, and an overall brighter place!

Management Of Blood In Urine By Prostate Cancer Patients

There is no standard treatment for blood in urine and prostate cancer. Thats because blood in the urine is a symptom and not a disease in itself. So, to manage the problem, physicians start by evaluating it. In addition to asking about a patients medical history and appearance of the blood in urine, physicians request a urine sample to be analyzed in a test called urinalysis, and/or a urine cytology, which consists of microscopically seeking abnormal cells in the urine.

Blood tests may be ordered to look for high levels of wastes that kidneys are supposed to remove. Additional exams that may be requested include a computed tomography scan, a kidney ultrasound, an intravenous pyelogram , a cystoscopy, or a biopsy. If prostate cancer is confirmed, treatment options include watchful waiting or active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, vaccine treatment and bone-directed treatment.

The treatment plan is defined by a physician or a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, including urologists and oncologists. Treatment depends on factors like the cancers stage and grade, patients age and expected lifespan, and additional health conditions. Other considerations include the patients and physicians opinions about the urgency of treating the cancer, potential side effects from each treatment, and the probability of each treatment in curing the cancer.

What Are Cancer Ribbons

Simply put, cancer ribbons are a simple loop of ribbon. Theyre commonly worn to show support for anyone with cancer or to spread awareness. Today, youll find ribbons in all different colors, each with a unique message behind it.

When did these ribbons get their start? It dates back to the 1949 film, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. In the film, a yellow ribbon is a symbol of a far-away lover. The story was inspired by a song dating back to the 1800s, but the idea didnt gain popularity until prisoners of war returned home from Vietnam in the 1970s.

During the Vietnam War, military spouses began to tie ribbons in their yard and wear them to show support for their loved ones fighting abroad. These only gained in popularity, and they began to be used to support other causes in the 1990s and early 2000s.

    How Peach Became Pink

Light blue ribbon as symbol of prostate cancer

The most famous tone, pink, has more than a splash of controversy in its colorful history. In a California dining room in 1991, Charlotte Haley, then 68, started making peach ribbons to bring attention to breast cancer. On every pack of five, she tacked a postcard asking people to lobby the National Cancer Institute to boost its cancer-prevention budget. Haley distributed thousands of peach ribbons.

In 1992, the editor of Self Magazine and the vice president of Estee Lauder asked Haley to partner. She refused, saying their planned use was too commercial. The executives instead decided to use pink for their own awareness campaign, according to the Breast Cancer Consortium.

The real surge of cancer shades began about 10 years later. In 1999, when Linda Nielsen and two partners launched ChooseHope.com, a for-profit, merchandise site for cancer patients and supporters, there were âmaybe sixâ colors, including teal for ovarian cancer and white for lung cancer, Nielsen recalled.

âWe went to each organization and said: âDo you have a cancer awareness color?ââ said Nielsen, a breast cancer survivor whose company has since donated more than $900,000 to cancer charities.

Today, ChooseHope sells bracelets and other awareness products covering 29 cancer types or cancer groups. Their online stock includes $6 black tumblers for melanoma and $1 amber rings for appendix cancer.
