However, soy milk has shown to be beneficial for the prostate! An analysis of 14 studies showed that increased intake of nonfermented soy products, such as soy milk, resulted in a 30 percent reduction in prostate cancer risk!

Vegan diets could help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer, according to a major new study funded by World Cancer Research Fund.

Scientists at Loma Linda University in California, USA looked at over 26,000 men, and for the first time assessed the link between prostate cancer and various types of diet, including non-vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan diets. It focused on types of diets rather than individual food items as people eat foods in combination and not in isolation. The study found that those with a vegan diet had a 35% reduced risk of prostate cancer.

Lifestyle And Diet May Stop Or Reverse Prostate Cancer Progression

Men with early stage prostate cancer who make intensive changes in diet and lifestyle may stop or perhaps even reverse the progression of their illness, according to a new study.
The research is the first randomized, controlled trial showing that lifestyle changes may affect the progression of any type of cancer. Study findings are published in the September issue of the Journal of Urology.
The study was directed by Dean Ornish, MD, clinical professor, and Peter Carroll, MD, chair of the Department of Urology, both of the University of California, San Francisco, and the late William Fair, MD, chief of urologic surgery and chair of urologic oncology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The research team studied 93 men with biopsy-proven prostate cancer who had elected not to undergo conventional treatment for reasons unrelated to this study. The participants were randomly divided into either a group who were asked to make comprehensive changes in diet and lifestyle or a comparison group who were not asked to do so.
None of the lifestyle-change participants had conventional prostate cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy during the study, but six members of the comparison group underwent conventional treatments because their disease progressed. Patients in the lifestyle-change group also reported marked improvements in quality of life.
Treating Advanced Prostate Cancer With Diet

Dr. Dean Ornish showed that a plant-based diet and lifestyle program could apparently reverse the progression of prostate cancer by making mens bloodstreams nearly eight times better at suppressing cancer cell growth. But this was for early-stage, localized, watch-and-wait prostate cancer.
What about for more advanced-stage, life-threatening disease? There have been sporadic case reports in the literature suggesting benefit. For example, a man with extensive metastatic disease who had been given about three years to live went on a strict plant-based diet. Four years later, it appeared the cancer had disappeared. After six years, he got a little too comfortable, backslid a bit on the diet and began eating turkey, tuna fish, and chicken, then the cancer came raging back and he died. But that could have been a total coincidence. Thats the problem with case reports, which are kind of glorified anecdotes. You have no idea how representative the outcome is unless its studied formally. But, throughout the 20th century, all we had were these kinds of case reports for more advanced prostate cancer until 2001.

Surgical procedures to remove the diseased prostate are usually necessary. Surgical procedures are not always necessary. What Are The Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
Symptoms of prostate cancer can include:
- Increased urgency as well as frequency of urination
- Weak or interrupted flow of urine
- Erectile dysfunction
- A need to strain while urinating
These symptoms can sometimes be similar to other prostate problems like benign prostate hypertrophy or prostatis. If there are any concerns it is best to seek medical help and discuss them with your GP.
It is also important to highlight that during the early stages of cancer, some people may be asymptomatic.

A Little About Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer develops in the prostate, a male sexual gland. And like all cancers, it can be aggressive and spread to other areas of the body where it can become life-threatening. According to the World Journal of Oncology, prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. If you are a man in the US, you have a 1 in 9 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in your lifetime. In 2018, there were approximately 1.3 million new cases globally, with over 164,000 of those in the US.
The American Cancer Society identifies age as the number one risk factor for prostate cancer. That is, the older you are, the more likely you are to have prostate cancer. African American men are also at higher risk of being diagnosed and are more likely to have high-grade, aggressive cancer. But when we take a step back, it becomes clear that prostate cancer rates are much higher in the western world, where diets high in animal products and processed foods are now the norm.
Additionally, population migration studies demonstrate that when men move from an area of the world with comparatively low levels of prostate cancer to an area with higher rates, their risk of prostate cancer also increases. This diet and lifestyle connection demonstrates that there is more at play than just genetics or how many trips a man has made around the sun.
Evidence From World Cancer Research Fund
Evidence from World Cancer Research Fund already shows there are ways to help reduce prostate cancer risk, such as maintaining a healthy weight. For cancer prevention in general it is important to eat a wide variety of wholegrains, pulses, fruits and vegetables.
Dr Panagiota Mitrou, Director of Research Funding at World Cancer Research Fund, said:
With prostate cancer being the most common cancer in men in the UK, prevention is key if we are to see a decrease in the number of men developing the disease. This exciting research has, for the first time, helped fill some vital gaps in our knowledge about eating patterns and the prevention of prostate cancer and could pave the way for future research. Although these results are exciting, more studies are needed to demonstrate the strength of the link between a vegan diet and reducing the risk of prostate cancer.
Professor Gary Fraser, study researcher at Loma Linda University, said:
This new research, funded by World Cancer Research Fund, makes a significant step in linking a vegan diet to reduced prostate cancer risk. What we now need is more research into this area to determine to the extent a vegan diet could reduce the number of men developing this cancer.

Another Study Links Plant
Greater overall consumption of plant-based foods is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer in men under the age of 65, according to a new study published in scientific, peer-reviewed publication Journal of Urology. The prospective study followed 47,243 men for up to 28 years. Plant-based dietary patterns were calculated using data from food frequency questionnaires collected every four years to discover the association between plant-based diets and the risk of prostate cancer.
During the study, a total of 6,660 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 516 with advanced stage at diagnosis, 958 with lethal disease, and 807 deaths from prostate cancer. Researchers found that greater consumption of plant-based foods was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer. In men under 65 years of age at diagnosis, greater overall consumption of plant-based foods was associated with a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer. Among younger men, greater consumption of a healthful plant-based diet was associated with lower risks of total prostate cancer. There were no associations with either the overall or healthful plant-based diet indices with prostate cancer among men older than 65 years.
Researchers pointed out that a limitation of the study was that less than one percent of participants followed a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, so they were unable to measure the risk in men who eat plant-based foods and no animal products.
Staying Satiated Throughout The Day
This was an issue for me up until my great groat discovery for breakfast. Just recently, I started adding about a quarter of a cooked sweet potato right into my morning groats and berries. Its the only thing I want for breakfast now, and it keeps me going well into the afternoon if needed. Although I still eat whole grain bread and love it, I try to steer more toward the intact grains themselves.

The evidence around the disease-preventative qualities of the vegan diet is now overwhelming. Time and again we are seeing new research showing the vegan diet to be significantly better for our health, said Jimmy Pierce, spokesperson for The Vegan Society.
Still lingering, however, is the perception that eating meat is macho, that it somehow enhances masculinity or virility. Yet it is killing thousands of men in the UK every year. Now is the time to reject this outdated notion and embrace plant-based living regardless of gender for the animals and the planet as well as your health, Pierce added.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK with over 47,000 new cases annually. Over 10,000 men die of the cancer each year, and worldwide it is the second most common cancer in men.

Guidelines For A Healthy Diet
Your diet should be:
- Include plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Limited in the amount of simple sugars
In addition, drink adequate fluids and be physically active to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

What Do We Know About Diet And Cancer
World Cancer Research Fund was the first organization to focus on the link between diet and cancer prevention. We have been funding and reviewing research in this area for nearly three decades, but only in recent years have others really started to take notice of the associations we have found.
Now that more people are acknowledging our cancer prevention message, those working in oncology and those in nutrition are slowly beginning to work together.
Our analysis of global research in our Continuous Update Project has found that eating a plant based diet , and being more physically active, decreases the risk of various cancers.
We also found that drinking more alcohol and eating processed and red meat can increase your risk of several cancers.
