Prostate Health And Coffee
One study suggested that coffee may actually reduce the danger of emerging prostate cancer. In accordance with a longitudinal study, drinking six or more mugs of coffee every day reduce the chance of developing prostate cancer. However, coffee can also aggravate certain prostate problems. Caffeine in the coffee has a diuretic effect which means it increases your urge to go to the toilet so it is suggested to avoid having coffee after 6 p.m.

Can The Mediterranean Diet Lead To Weight Loss
As a traditional way of eating for many cultures worldwide, the Mediterranean diet wasnt designed for weight loss. It just so happens that one of the healthiest diets around the globe is also good for keeping your weight down.
Its not a slam dunk, researchers note, and instead depends on how you eat. Portion sizes and fat amounts matter even in healthy diets like the Mediterranean.
Sugary Sodas And Drinks
High sugar intake is associated with all cancers, including prostate cancer. Sodas and sugary drinks in particular can easily tip your sugar intake into unhealthy levels.
One study out of Sweden found that a higher dietary intake of refined carbohydrates, such as cakes, cookies and sugary soft drinks, was correlated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.â´ Another cohort study of over 22,000 men from researchers at the University of California concluded that âlimiting intake of sugars from beverages may be important in the prevention of prostate cancer.ââµ

High Blood Sugar And Prostate Cancer
If you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, heres another reason to try to get your blood sugar under control: if you get prostate cancer, you are more likely to die from it, says new Johns Hopkins-led research.
We knew from previous studies that men who have diabetes have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, but that they may have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer if they do develop it, says Corinne Joshu, Ph.D., M.P.H., senior author of the study.
With colleagues Michael Marrone, M.P.H., and Elizabeth Platz, Sc.D., M.P.H., she aimed to understand more about the connections between blood sugar and prostate cancer.
In an analysis of data from more than 5,000 cancer-free men in the Atherosclerosis in Communities study, they studied three markers for blood sugar in men who did not have diagnosed diabetes: fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and glycated albumin, Joshu explains, and worked to better classify low, normal, and high blood sugar.
Men who were classified with high glycemia on all three markers had almost a five times greater risk of dying from prostate cancer, compared to men who were normal on all three markers. Men with a diabetes diagnosis appeared to have a three-fold or greater risk of dying of prostate cancer and so did men who did not have diabetes who had low blood sugar.
Include Fiber In Your Diet
Fiber is an important part of your diet because it:
- Helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation.
- Provides a feeling of fullness.
- Helps with weight loss.
- Can lower the risk for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
Plant foods are the best sources of fiber. In addition to fruits and vegetables, eating a variety of whole grains, cereals, legumes , nuts, and seeds can provide the fiber you need.
Read your food labels carefully to find out if the foods you choose have whole grains. Food labels must have the word whole right before the name of the grain. For example, when choosing a wheat bread or pasta, the label must read whole wheat, not enriched wheat flour.
Here are some tips to get more fiber and whole grains in your diet:
- Eat foods such as whole-wheat bread, brown rice, barley, whole oats, oatmeal, bran cereals, and popcorn.
- Try pancakes, muffins, or bread mixes made with whole-wheat or buckwheat flour.
- Choose a whole grain like barley and add a small amount of dried fruit or toasted nuts.
- Add beans to rice, pasta, salad, and soups.
- Choose fresh fruits and vegetables instead of juices.
Slowly increase how much fiber you eat and drink at least 8 glasses of liquids each day.

Another type of prostate issue is chronic prostatitis, or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. This condition causes pain in the lower back and groin area, and may cause urinary retention. Symptoms include leaking and discomfort. In severe cases, a catheter may be required to relieve the symptoms. If the problem is unresponsive to other treatments, your doctor may suggest a surgical procedure. If these do not work, your symptoms could progress and become chronic.
An acute bacterial infection can cause a burning sensation. Inflammation of the prostate can affect the bladder and result in discomfort and other symptoms. This is the most common urinary tract problem in men under 50, and the third most common in men over 65. The symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis are similar to those of CPPS. Patients may experience a fever or chills as a result of the infection.
Diet Insulin And Prostate Cancer
A glycemic index has been developed for persons with diabetes, so that they can take advantage of the small amounts of insulin they may produce. This index ranks carbohydrates in different foods on a scale of 0-100, depending on how much those foods increase blood sugar levels after consumption. The consumption of low-glycemic foods lowers blood sugar levels and decreases insulin production. According to this theory, low levels of insulin growth factor would prevent cancer cells from growing as rapidly.
In the 1920s, Ohsawa popularized the concept of a macrobiotic diet, which comprises foods with a very low glycemic index. This stringent diet consists primarily of whole grains and vegetables. Even most fruits are excluded. In contrast, the diabetic diet restricts only those foods with the highest glycemic index, such as the following:
The renewed focus on the role of insulin in preventing or slowing the progression of prostate cancer and other cancers is exemplified by the interest in using metformin for that purpose. Nevertheless, while the Diabetes Prevention Program trial demonstrated that metformin has the ability to prevent type 2 diabetes, an underappreciated finding of that trial was the profound reduction in diabetes risk produced by lifestyle changes . In fact, lifestyle changes proved significantly more effective than metformin for diabetes prevention . Once again, this illustrates the value of an integrated approach to health promotion and disease prevention.

Surgical procedures to remove the diseased prostate are usually necessary. Surgical procedures are not always necessary. If the disease is caused by bacterial infections, a doctor can treat the symptoms using alpha-blockers or surgery. Physical therapy, relaxation exercises, and warm baths are all recommended. A physician may also prescribe antibiotics to cure the infection. A bacterial infection can also cause a recurrence of the condition.
An enlarged prostate can be uncomfortable for both men and women. Some of the symptoms of an enlarged male reproductive organ include a weakened urine stream, urgent need to urinate, and urinary tract infections. BPH can also cause damage to the kidneys. A sudden inability to urinate can be life-threatening, as it can lead to bladder and kidney damage. Unfortunately, most men with enlarged prostrates put up with the symptoms for years before they seek treatment. However, many of the men with symptoms finally decide to go to a doctor for proper gynecological evaluation and to begin enlarged prostatic therapy.
The Sugar And Cancer Connection
Does sugar feed cancer? Its one of the questions we get asked often. We prepared this video to provide an evidence-based answer to this frequently asked question.
The bottom line: every cell in our bodies, including cancer cells, uses sugar from our bloodstream for fuel.
We get that blood sugar from foods we eat containing carbohydrates, including healthful vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy sources. Some glucose is even produced within our bodies from protein, but theres no clear evidence that the sugar in your diet preferentially feeds tumors over other cells.
There is a connection between sugar and cancer risk, however, but its more indirect than many realize. Eating a lot of high-sugar foods may mean more calories in your diet than you need, which eventually leads to excess body fat. After not smoking, being at a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do to prevent cancer. It is excess body fat that is convincingly linked to greater risk of these 12 types of cancer:
The American Institute for Cancer Research helps the public understand the relationship between lifestyle, nutrition and cancer risk. We work to prevent cancer through innovative research, community programs and impactful public health initiatives.

Does Sugar Cause Cancer
Sugar feeds every cell in your body. But does sugar cause cancer, orhelp it to grow and spread? Our expert says to watch out for addedsugars, but not for the reasons you may think.
Does sugar feed cancer cells?
Lets look at the evidence to find out whether sugar causes cancer to grow and spread more quickly.
Its true that sugar feeds every cell in our body even cancer cells. But, research shows that eating sugar doesnt necessarily lead to cancer. Its what sugar does to your waistline that can lead to cancer.
Taking in too many sugar calories may result in weight gain. And, being overweight or obese puts you at a higher risk for cancer and other diseases.
So, should you avoid sugar? Our expert says no.
Your bodys cells use sugar to keep your vital organs functioning, says Erma Levy, a research dietitian in Behavioral Science. But too much daily sugar can cause weight gain. And, unhealthy weight gain and a lack of exercise can increase your cancer risks.
Eat the right amount of sugar
So, how much sugar is safe to eat? Women should have no more than six teaspoons per day , and men should have no more than nine teaspoons per day , says the American Heart Association. This equals to about 100 calories for women and 150 for men.
If youre like most Americans, you actually eat more than double that much sugar in a day about 22 teaspoons. Thats 260 cups or 130 lbs. of sugar each year.

Dietary Fructose Boosts Tumor Growth/proliferation Of Human Prostate Cancer Xenograft Models And Promotes Proliferation/cell Cycle And Carcinogenesis/progression Pathways In Vitro In Prostate Cancer Cells
In parallel, we utilized a PDX model in which tissue integrity and architecture remained constant throughout the experiment . Immunostaining analysis of Ki-67 in tissue sections from PDX showed a significant increase in the percentage of Ki-67positive prostate cancer cells in fructose when compared with both glucose and control conditions . In addition, Glut5 and Glut9 expression was significantly increased in fructose when compared with control condition . No significant differences in Glut5 and Glut9 expression were observed between fructose and glucose or between glucose and control condition . Stimulatory effect of fructose on tumor growth also was reported in certain subtypes of breast and intestinal cancers. In prostate cancer, however, these findings become more relevant because prostate cancer cells express very low or intracellular levels of Glut1 and prostate cancer tumors are not efficiently imaged using PET-FDG .
Taken together, our findings provide compelling evidence to support a key role for fructose as a potential metabolic substrate capable of increasing prostate cancer cell proliferation and aggressiveness. Further expression and functional studies of Glut5 in prostate cancer may provide clinical and therapeutic opportunities, such as the validation of Glut5 as a potential biomarker and a therapeutic target.

Find Your Body Mass Index
BMI is a measurement of the amount of fat in your body based on your height and weight. It can help you learn if your weight is healthy or not. A healthy BMI for an adult is between 18.5 and 24.9.
|30 or higher||Obese|
You can calculate your BMI using the tool on this website: www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm. You can also find your BMI on the BMI table below. To use the table:
For example, if youre 5 feet, 5 inches tall and you weigh 168 pounds, then your BMI is 28. This means youre considered overweight. Your goal should be to achieve a BMI that puts you in the normal range.
If your BMI is above 25, look for the weights that correlate with a healthy BMI for your height. That should be your target weight.
Keep in mind that BMI is only one health measure. Other measures include waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference, which look at weight in your abdominal area. Extra weight in the abdominal area is associated with an increased risk for certain illnesses, even in people with a normal BMI.

Maintaining Good Nutrition During And After Treatment
Maintaining a healthy diet can help you prepare for and recover after cancer treatment. It may also help to prevent the prostate cancer from coming back.Watching your weight may also reduce your risk of dying from prostate cancer. Recent studies have indicated that the risk of dying from prostate cancer is more than double in obese men diagnosed with the disease compared with men of normal weight at the time of diagnosis. Obese men with local or regional disease have been shown to have nearly four times the risk of their cancer spreading beyond the prostate or metastasizing.
Prostate cancer treatment may affect your appetite, eating habits, and weight, but it is important for you to maintain a healthy weight, get essential nutrients, and remain as physically active as possible. If you have difficulty eating due to side effects from treatment, there are ways to make eating more comfortable. Working with a registered dietitian/nutritionist can help make sure you are getting the nutrition you need.
Unfortunately it is possible for the side effects of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy to cause you to lose your appetite, eat less and lose weight. On the other hand, some treatments, such as androgen deprivation therapy may cause weight gain for some men.

Polyphenols Coffee And Pomegranate
Polyphenols are found in varying amounts in most fruits and vegetables, as well as in green tea and red wine. These agents act via antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antiangiogenesis pathways and have proapoptotic effects.
Some of the more popular polyphenols have been the catechins in green tea, which have been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth in animal and epidemiologic studies. Epigallocatechin , which is a principal ingredient in green tea leaves, interferes with biochemical reactions associated with cellular proliferation and enhances apoptosis. EGCG is a potent inhibitor of the carcinogenic heterocyclic amines , which are produced from overcooked or charred meat.
Some preliminary epidemiologic data support increasing green tea and/or EGCG consumption to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. In addition, some preliminary research also suggests that coffee consumption may help to prevent prostate cancer or aggressive prostate cancer. Still, the question remains whether these low-caloric beverages have tangible anti-cancer properties or are just markers of overall healthy behaviors that could cumulatively be responsible for a lower prostate cancer risk. This will be difficult to answer any time soon, but consuming low-caloric beverages to help maintain or achieve a healthy weight is a reasonable recommendation.
