Five Tips That Boost Prostate Health

You rarely gave your prostate much thought, but as you grow older, you become increasingly aware of just how troublesome this small gland can be. From an enlarged prostate to prostate cancer, you want to steer clear of these problematic conditions as best you can.

We have the same goal for you here at our practice, which is why Dr. Robert Cornell and our team of mens health experts wanted to present a few tips that will support the health of your prostate.

Signs Of An Enlarged Prostate

It is normal for the prostate to grow in size throughout a mans life. The prostate goes through two main growth periods, the first early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. The second growth phase continues during most of a mans life and usually starts around age 25 .

With increasing age, this growth can lead to a host of symptoms, referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms . One of the most common signs that your prostate is getting bigger is needing to get up to urinate at night more often than when you were younger. If you experience any LUTS, you should inform your healthcare provider. Some of the most common LUTS include :

  • Needing to urinate frequently
  • Starting and frequently stopping during urination
  • Having to strain to urinate

If Youre The Giving Partner

Cleanliness and safety are a must, even for the giver.

Cut and file your nails smooth to help avoid scratching or tearing the delicate skin in and around the anus.

Wash your hands thoroughly, even if youre planning to use a condom over your finger to penetrate your partner. For extra comfort, stuff cotton balls inside the condom or glove.

You can also get the party started in the shower together, which serves as foreplay and gets you both all nice and clean for the big show.

Youll probably need to try a few different moves and experiment with speed and pressure to find what feels best.

Here are some techniques to try, whether youre using fingers or toys.

Research has shown that lycopene may be associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer.

What is lycopene? It’s a powerful antioxidant that gives tomatoes,as well as watermelon and pink grapefruit, their rich red color. One study found that the risk of developing prostate cancer, especially aggressive prostate cancer, decreased with increasing blood lycopene levels.

Cooked or processed tomato products, such as pasta sauce and tomato paste, are a tasty way to add lycopene to your diet. They pack a greater lycopene punch than raw tomatoes, and cooking the tomatoes in a healthy monosaturated fat helps the body to better absorb lycopene.

Aim For A Healthy Eating Pattern

Instead of focusing on specific foods, dietitians, physicians, and researchers tout an overall pattern of healthy eating and healthy eating is easier than you might think. In a nutshell, here’s what experts recommend:

  • Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Go for those with deep, bright color.
  • Choose whole-grain bread instead of white bread and choose whole-grain pasta and cereals.
  • Limit your consumption of red meat, including beef, pork, lamb, and goat, and processed meats, such as bologna and hot dogs. Fish, skinless poultry, beans, and eggs are healthier sources of protein.
  • Choose healthful fats, such as olive oil, nuts , and avocados. Limit saturated fats from dairy and other animal products. Avoid partially hydrogenated fats , which are in many fast foods and packaged foods.
  • Avoid sugar-sweetened drinks, such as sodas and many fruit juices. Eat sweets as an occasional treat.
  • Cut down on salt. Choose foods low in sodium by reading and comparing food labels. Limit the use of canned, processed, and frozen foods.
  • Watch portion sizes. Eat slowly and stop eating when you are full.

Eat Less Red Meat And Processed Meat And More Fatty Fish

Studies have linked red meat, such as pork, lamb and beef, and processed meats like lunch meat, hot dogs and bacon, with prostate cancer . Therefore, intake of these should be limited.

The healthier choice is oily, fatty fish such as salmon and trout. These fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which differ from the saturated fats found in red and processed meat. Studies have suggested that the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 served to reduce the growth and progression of prostate cancer and BPH.

Another suggests that eating fish rich in omega-3 at least once a week may reduce a mans risk of developing advanced prostate cancer, even if they are at higher risk due to genetics.

Most healthcare professionals recommend eating fish rich in omega-3 twice a week. Varieties include:

    Fresh Atlantic or Australian salmon

    Sardines

    Mackerel

    Tips For A Healthy Prostate

How To Keep Prostate Healthy – Prostate Vitamins

More than 190,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Cancer Society. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to keep your prostate healthy as you ageand stay ahead of the game. Heres what Christopher Saigal, MD, an assistant professor of urology at UCLAs Jonsson Cancer Center, says to do:

    1. Keep a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

    2. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, watermelons, pink grapefruits, guava and papaya contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale also are good choices.

    3. Let your doctor know if you have a family history of prostate cancer. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a mans risk of developing this disease.

    4. Include more soy in your diet from sources such as tofu, soy nuts or soy flour or powders.

    5. Dont smoke.

    6. Eat more selenium-rich foods such as wheat germ, tuna, herring and other seafood and shellfish, beef liver, kidney, eggs, sunflower and sesame seeds, cashews, mushrooms, garlic and onions. Selenium reduces risk of prostate cancer.

    7. Get a PSA blood test and digital rectal exam annually, beginning at age 50. Men at high risk, such as African American men or men with a strong family history of prostate cancer should begin testing at age 45.

    What Is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is an enlargement of the prostate that is not due to a malignant growth. Its a common problem and risk increases with age. For example, in Australia men aged 45 have roughly 1 in 17 chance of developing BPH, while men aged 75 years and over have a 1 in 4 chance.

Even though the growth is benign, BPH can still cause problems. As the prostate gets bigger, it can press on the urethra and slow or even prevent the flow of urine, in a similar way to bending a hose stops the flow of water.

Variable symptoms of BPH may include:

    • Increased urine frequency.
    • Incomplete voiding.

    Maintain A Healthy Weight

Carrying extra pounds can tax your body and its ability to maintain optimal health, especially when it comes to warding off cancer. While studies are inconclusive about a direct link between obesity and prostate cancer, they suggest that abdominal obesity may be associated with prostate cancer, especially aggressive prostate cancer.

Easy Steps You Need To Take To Make Sure You Prostate Is Healthy

Lets try to imagine for a second, a world in which you have all the time and resources in the world to take care of your prostate in the best possible way. It would require quite a few changes to your daily routine, but would result in a nearly perfectly healthy prostate that would stand the test of time, and remain in bulletproof over the years. Yes, it is very difficult finding the time in your well adjusted lifestyle and changing your habits, but you just need to understand that most of the time your prostate problems are a result of that exact lifestyle, and hence you need to target the root of the problem!

    If Youre The Receiving Partner

Tips to Keep Your Prostate Gland Healthy : Human N Health

Youll want to be as relaxed and aroused as possible, because itll make the experience easier and more enjoyable.

The whole poop-comes-out-of-the-butt thing gives some people a case of the heebie-jeebies even when its their own butt.

Remedy this by taking a shower and paying a little extra attention back there to get it squeaky clean. Some people like to use an enema before engaging in butt play, but it isnt necessary.

Use the bathroom before getting started. Prostate stimulation can make you feel like you need to pee, and anal penetration can cause the sensation of needing to poop.

Even though you wont actually do either, worrying that you might can interfere with your ability to let go and enjoy yourself. Knowing your bladder and bowels are empty can help.

Getting used to the sensation of having your prostate touched can help, too. Practice with an anal sex toy, like a butt plug, or your fingers.

Be sure to set the mood so that youre turned on and primed for action. Light candles, watch porn, or engage in some good old-fashioned masturbation or foreplay to get there.

Finally, be sure to lube up real good. Applying a water-based lubricant will allow for easier penetration and make for some easy gliding if stimulating your prostate externally.

    Reach For Whole Grains

This one couldnt be easier. Next time you go grocery shopping, rather than choosing a loaf of white bread or packet of white rice, go for the whole grain alternative. As their name suggests, whole grain products are made from the entire grain of cereal, including the endosperm, germ, and bran, whereas refined grains use only the endosperm. As a result, whole grains are an excellent source of dietary fibre, manganese, thiamin, niacin, and vitamin B-6.

Whole grain products are great for your overall wellbeing, and this includes your prostate. Studies suggest that there are several ways fibre may lower the risk of prostate cancer, including diluting potential carcinogens and promoting healthful bacteria growth, reducing inflammation and insulin resistance, and promoting a healthy weight.

Choose whole-grain bread over white bread, brown rice over white rice, whole grain pasta over the usual white affair. They taste very similar and are much, much better for you!

Reduce Dietary Factors That Could Be Contributing To Obesity

Multiple studies have found that men who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of developing prostate cancer and BPH.

One, in particular, found that obesity is associated with numerous hormonal changes, many of which have been implicated in prostate cancer development and progression with data strongly suggest that obesity is a significant risk factor for prostate cancer death.

Another study also noted a strong relationship between obesity and BPH development, which suggested a link between the reduced testosterone levels seen in obese men and prostate enlargement. In addition, the same study noted that the increased levels of estrogen in obese men was also a risk factor for BPH, as is increased insulin levels.

Another suggests that a lack of exercise, poor diet, and poor lifestyle all risk factors for obesity can weaken the immune system and increase inflammatory agents in the body, further contributing to prostate enlargement and cancer.

The takeaway? Skip the takeaway food! Exercise regularly . Make better lifestyle choices. Eat better. And work towards reducing the risk of prostate disease.
