Mayo Clinic Explains Prostate Cancer

Some laboratory studies on cancer cells have shown that curcumin has anti cancer effects. It seems to be able to kill cancer cells and prevent more from growing.

Curcumin is being looked at in clinical trials and some of the results have been promising. Larger studies are needed.

At the moment there is no clear evidence in humans to show that turmeric or curcumin can prevent or treat cancer.

Ology Of Data Retrieval

This is a review paper in which the already published literature works of different authors are retrieved for review. The source from which the data is collected is mainly journal articles. The main focus is given on the synthesis of relevant literature so that the research aims and objectives can be evaluated. Therefore, the use of this method will provide the reader with a detailed and state-of the-the-art understanding of therapeutic perspectives of piperidine and piperine, along with the anticancer properties of such. To do so, relevant literature works are collected from databases, keeping in mind that obtained and selected resources are available over the Internet and gives better understanding of the topic. It is also emphasized that the collected studies are not older than 1992. A total of 108 publications are retrieved and cited accordingly. With all these, the summarized result of this paper includes 11 different types of cancers for piperine and 5 for piperidine.

Capsaicin, the stuff that turns up the heat in jalapeños, not only causes the tongue to burn, it also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves, according to studies published in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

According to a team of researchers from the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in collaboration with colleagues from UCLA, the pepper component caused human prostate cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death or apoptosis.

Capsaicin induced approximately 80 percent of prostate cancer cells growing in mice to follow the molecular pathways leading to apoptosis. Prostate cancer tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in non-treated mice.

“Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture,” said Sören Lehmann, M.D., Ph.D., visiting scientist at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine. “It also dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by those human cell lines grown in mouse models.”

Potential Of Piperine In Modulation Of Voltage

Piperine Extract

Y. Ba, A. Malhotra

OBJECTIVE: Piperine is an attractive therapeutic alkaloid from black pepper that exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties over various pathological disorders including cancer. Voltage-gated K+ channels play an important role in regulating cancer cell proliferation and are considered as potential targets for the treatment of cancer. However, there is a paucity of information with regard to the implication of piperine in KV associated anticancer activities on human prostate cancer cells LNCaP and PC-3 cells. Therefore, the primary objective of the present study was to elucidate the anticancer action of piperine that might be mediated via voltage-gated K+ current blockade.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Whole-cell patch clamp was used to record the modulatory effects of piperine on IK expressed in LNCaP and PC-3 cells. Moreover, the anticancer activity of piperine was evaluated by MTT assay, flow cytometry and live/dead assay.

RESULTS: Piperine significantly inhibited IK in a dose-dependent manner with an effective IC50 dose 39.91 µM in LNCaP and 49.45 µM in PC-3 cells. Also, piperine induced a positive shift in the relative activation curve in both cells. Blockade of IK by piperine exerted G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest that led to inhibition of cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

Risks And Side Effects

There is not much scientific evidence to suggest black pepper causes any major health risks and side effects.

While consuming too much black pepper may cause digestive distress, this is true of most herbs and spices. And eating large quantities of black pepper may cause burning sensations in the mouth and throat.

However, some research does suggest that black pepper, or more specifically, piperine, can potentially lead to adverse effects in certain situations.

For example, studies involving rodents and humans have shown that piperine may boost the absorption of certain medicines, such as antihistamines. This might be helpful for poorly absorbed drugs, but it may result in overly high absorption of other medications.

Therefore, it is important to consult a healthcare provider about possible drug interactions before increasing black pepper intake or taking piperine supplements.

Are There Any Risks Of Taking Turmeric

Turmeric, as a spice, is generally considered very safe. Most people who do want to take advantage of the health properties of the spice tend to opt for supplements.

These would contain a concentrated turmeric extract. For a more potent effect, supplements with the active ingredient curcumin are used.

In these cases, there are a few side-effects that have been reported among users.

Some of the side-effects that may be experienced by men who decided to take turmeric or curcumin supplements include:

These are not serious side-effects, and men who do experience these adverse reactions tend to recover from them quickly.

It is important to note that in rare cases, an abnormal heart rhythm has been reported. This can be a dangerous side-effect. When this side-effect is experienced, the user should immediately stop taking the turmeric supplements and seek medical assistance.

May Benefit Your Brain

Piperine has been shown to improve brain function in animal studies.

In particular, it has demonstrated potential benefits for symptoms related to degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease .

For example, a study in rats with Alzheimers disease found that piperine improved memory, as the distribution of piperine enabled the rats to repeatedly run a maze more efficiently than rats not given the compound .

In another rodent study, piperine extract seemed to decrease the formation of amyloid plaques, which are dense clumps of damaging protein fragments in the brain that have been linked to Alzheimers disease .

Yet, studies in humans are needed to confirm whether these effects are also seen outside animal studies.

Black pepper extract has improved symptoms of degenerative brain diseases in animal studies, but studies in humans are needed to verify these results.

24 ).

In one study, rats fed a black pepper extract had a smaller spike in blood sugar levels after consuming glucose compared to rats in the control group .

Additionally, 86 overweight people taking a supplement containing piperine and other compounds for 8 weeks experienced significant improvements in insulin sensitivity a measure of how well the hormone insulin removes glucose from the bloodstream .

However, its unclear whether the same effects would occur with black pepper alone, as a combination of many active plant compounds was used in this study.

Black Pepper And Drug Interactions

7 Things to Know About Prostate Cancer with Radiation Oncologist Florence Wright, MD

Highlighting another possible concern, a 2012 book titled âAnesthesia and Uncommon Diseasesâ, published by Elsevier, points out that black pepper might be problematic for those taking various prescription medications.

Specifically, the authors note that laboratory research suggests that the key ingredient in black pepper â piperine â may weaken an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps the body properly metabolize certain medications.

That concern is also highlighted in a review of prior research published in the September 2018 issue of âPharmaceuticsââ,â which pointed to lab and animal research demonstrating that piperine inhibits CYP3A4 activity. The study also cautioned that piperine can double the potency of certain herbal compounds, such as the rhubarb extract emodin.

Although the findings have not been confirmed in humans, concerns raised by the book and study underscore the risk that black pepper may super-charge herbal compounds and a range of common prescription drugs, such as calcium channel blockers, chemotherapy drugs, fentanyl and antifungals.

How Much Bioperine Should I Take In A Supplement

For those who take BioPerine in a dietary supplement, the clinical dose for enhanced absorption of curcumin is 5 mg per 250-500 mg of curcumin . Many companies tend to put less than 5 mg of BioPerine in their supplements, just enough that they can include it on the label and market the increase in absorption. But, more often than not, these amounts arent even close to the clinical dose needed for improved absorption.

If you see a product with less than 5 mg of BioPerine, question the other ingredients in the product as well. Again, this is where the industry uses hard data for marketing purposes, employing a bait-and-switch tactic, whereby they make consumers aware of the benefits of BioPerine but then shortchange them by providing so small a dose that it delivers virtually no clinical benefits. This bait-and-switch tactic again illustrates the frequency with which companies prioritize profits above efficacy, safety, and purity.

If a product contains black pepper extract only, then beware of this as well. Youre probably not getting a product standardized to contain 95 percent piperine , and therefore, you will not get the results that the company claims .

Curcumin For A Sore Mouth During Cancer Treatment

A systematic review in 2019 looked at curcumin given topically to people with head and neck cancer who were having chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They wanted to see if curcumin could help treat or prevent mucositis . Curcumin did delay mucositis, reduced pain and seemed to speed up wound healing. More studies are needed so that we can compare the results.

Side Effects Of Turmeric

Neo Elementum

It is important to remember that turmeric used in cooking is very safe. But we don’t know how safe curcumin is when used for medical reasons. So far, research studies seem to show that it causes few or no side effects. But we don’t know much about the side effects of taking it in large amounts to treat or prevent cancer.

People have reported stomach pain when eating too much turmeric. They have also reported skin problems when taking it for a long time. So, if you use curcumin for reasons other than cooking, talk to your doctor first.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has warned against Fortodol . It is a turmeric-based food supplement, containing other ingredients.

Fortodol contains the strong anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide. Nimesulide can cause severe damage to the liver. The signs include:

  • stomach or abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite

It does not have a licence as a medicine in the UK. The Food Standards Agency in the USA states that products with unknown amounts of nimesulide could be very harmful.

Helping Blood Sugar Control

small 2013 study on humans on the effects of a supplement containing several bioactive food ingredients including piperine on insulin resistance found an improvement in insulin sensitivity. This means the hormone insulin was better able to regulate the uptake of glucose.

However, because the supplement contained multiple food ingredients, it is not clear if piperine alone would have produced the same results.

Possible Dangers And Side Effects

Black pepper is considered safe for human consumption in the typical amounts used in food and cooking .

Supplements containing 520 mg of piperine per dose also appear to be safe, but research in this area is limited (

, 26).

While this may be helpful for medications that are poorly absorbed, it can also lead to dangerously high absorption of others.

If youre interested in increasing your black pepper intake or taking piperine supplements, be sure to check with your healthcare provider about possible drug interactions.

Summary

Typical amounts of black pepper used in cooking and supplements with up to 20 mg of piperine appear to be safe. Still, black pepper may enhance the absorption of drugs and should be used with caution in combination with certain medications.
