New Prostate Cancer Treatment Available In Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, NC – A new tool that’s considered one of the most significant advancements in prostate cancer treatment is now being used in Charlotte. It could literally mean the difference between life and death for many men.
The tool is called Prostate MRI and it’s much like a mammogram used to diagnose breast cancer in women.
According to Dr. Chris Teigland of Charlotte’s Levine Cancer Institute, ” Where we’re actually imaging prostates like mammograms used to image breasts. We’re imaging prostates and we’re only biopsying those lesions where they look like they’re going to be clinically significant cancers.”
Dr. Teigland is considered one of the leading prostate cancer experts in the United States.
He says the new trend in prostate cancer has moved toward trying to identify those patients who have clinically significant disease that needs to be treated, and trying not to treat those who don’t need to be treated.
“The reason for that is that we’ve learned that a lot of the early low grade cancers that we were diagnosing in the 90s and 2000s really could be watched,” Teigland said. “So we no longer operate on those very low risk or low risk patients. So we’re only operating on more clinically significant cancers and watching the low risk cancers.”
In another significant development, newly developed genetic analysis is allowing doctors to determine if a cancer is clinically significant.
It is recommended that any man 40 years or older have his prostate checked.

While doctors dont know exactly what causes prostate cancer, certain factors are linked to increased risk. About five to ten percent of prostate cancers are hereditary, meaning genes that run in your family can lead to cancer.

What Are The Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
In most cases, prostate cancer is silent. Due to the location of the prostate gland deep within the groin, a growing tumor would not be close enough to painfully press on any nearby organs or tissues. With that said, some men experience:

More often, the cause of these symptoms is unrelated to prostate cancer, so its important to discuss them with a physician before drawing any conclusions. As part of the diagnostic process, a physician may perform a digital rectum exam to manually check the prostate and order a prostate-specific antigen test to measure the level of PSA in the blood.
Although an elevated PSA level may be a sign of prostate cancer, it could also indicate a noncancerous condition, such as prostate inflammation or enlargement . Therefore, if a PSA test reveals an elevated PSA level, a physician will typically order a biopsy to confirm or rule out a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Another type of prostate issue is chronic prostatitis, or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. This condition causes pain in the lower back and groin area, and may cause urinary retention. Symptoms include leaking and discomfort. In severe cases, a catheter may be required to relieve the symptoms. If the problem is unresponsive to other treatments, your doctor may suggest a surgical procedure. If these do not work, your symptoms could progress and become chronic.
An acute bacterial infection can cause a burning sensation. Inflammation of the prostate can affect the bladder and result in discomfort and other symptoms. This is the most common urinary tract problem in men under 50, and the third most common in men over 65. The symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis are similar to those of CPPS. Patients may experience a fever or chills as a result of the infection.

What Causes Prostate Cancer
Within the general medical community, the precise causes of prostate cancer are not yet well understood. Researchers are currently studying specific genetic and lifestyle factors to determine whether those factors contribute to its development.
Based on diagnostic rates, advanced age is the primary risk factor for prostate cancer, followed by a family history of prostate, breast, ovarian, colon or pancreatic cancer. Certain lifestyle factors, such as tobacco use, obesity and poor nutrition, also seem to play a role in its development. However, an unhealthy lifestyle is associated with many health issues that can change the course of any illness, including prostate cancer.
What Are The Types Of Prostate Cancer
The most common type of prostate cancer, diagnosed in nearly all cases, is prostatic adenocarcinomas. All other prostate cancer types comprise an estimated 1-5% of cases. Prostatic adenocarcinoma develops in the glandular epithelial cells that line the prostate and can be categorized into two subtypes:
- Acinar adenocarcinoma Most prostate cancers are diagnosed as acinar adenocarcinomas. It produces elevated PSA levels and, since the cells grow in the back of the prostate near the rectum, the cancerous cells can sometimes be felt during a digital rectal exam, making this subtype easier to detect.
- Prostatic ductal adenocarcinoma A rarer, more aggressive form of prostatic adenocarcinoma, this subtype develops in the cells lining the tubes and ducts of the prostate gland. Its harder to detect and often develops alongside acinar adenocarcinoma.
Other, less common types of prostate cancer include urothelial cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, small cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and soft-tissue prostate cancer.

Active Surveillance For Prostate Cancer
Our active surveillance process uses sophisticated prostate MRI imaging to analyze the makeup of your tumor and provide a personalized risk assessment. This process is used for small, nonaggressive tumors that have a low probability of impacting your health and are not likely to grow or spread.
Your doctor may recommend active surveillance and periodic imaging tests to monitor your prostate cancer and determine whether treatment is needed. Active surveillance includes a prostate-specific antigen test every six-to-12 months and a prostate MRI every one or two years. A biopsy may be taken at the time of your prostate MRI as well.
