How Do I Do A Kegel Exercise
Locating your pelvic muscles is the hard part. Now that you have located your pelvic floor muscles, you can exercise them by following these simple steps:
Tighten and hold your pelvic floor muscles for five seconds
Relax your pelvic muscles. You have just done one Kegel exercise. You should plan to do 10 to 20 Kegel exercises three to four times each day.

Again, more mobility for your thoracic spine but this time by adding in rotation movements. This exercise will feel great in your upper back to reduce joint stiffness. If you have a foam roller this can be helpful to get more range of movement. Push down on it with the back of the forearm during the rotation movement.

Pelvic Floor Exercises After Radical Prostatectomy
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that have a important role in continence. They are very close and often related to the prostate. To ensure the best possible cancer clearance they can unfortunately be damaged during the surgery and weaken.
Pelvic floor exercises can strengthen existing / undamaged muscle to improve continence.After the radical prostatectomy surgery youll have a tube called a catheter to drain urine from your bladder. The catheter is usually removed after one to three weeks. You can start doing pelvic floor muscle exercises as soon as your catheter has been removed. Theyre safe to do, and wont hurt or cause any damage.
How do I find my pelvic floor muscles?
Its important to find the right muscles before you start doing pelvic oor muscle exercises. To do this, either sit, stand or lie down whichever you find most comfortable and relax your thighs and buttocks.
How do I do the exercises?
Make sure youve found the right muscles, and know how it should feel when you tighten them, before trying these exercises. There are two sets of exercises slow and fast. You can do them while sitting, standing or lying down whichever you prefer.
Slow pelvic floor muscle exercises
1. Slowly tighten the muscles as hard as you can so you feel a lifting sensation.
2. Try to hold this lift for ten seconds. Keep breathing normally.
3. Slowly relax the muscles and rest for ten seconds.
4. Aim to repeat the lift and rest up to ten times.

You might feel sore and tight around your hips and abdominals after surgery from having many incision sites around the area. This stretch hits the area and works to combat the issues associated with spending more time sitting down during recovery. However it is important to remember to completegently as there is potential to aggravate your surgical sites.

When To Exercise The Male Kegal Muscles
* You can perform male Kegel exercises anywhere at any time. People around you will not even know you are doing them. Take advantage of this by incorporating kegel exercises into your daily routine. For example, you can do them while driving a car, waiting in line, watching television, reading a book. Be sure to exercise daily. The more you do, the better. * You can also do these when you have an incontinent episode. For example, if you are experiencing urinary leakage on the way to the bathroom, stop and do a few kegel exercises until the leakage stops and then continue to the bathroom. If you leak urine when you cough, tighten the muscles quickly as you cough to reduce leakage. This is your best method of reducing leakage at inconvenient times.
A Tailored Approach To Therapy
Healthcare professionals who specialize in pelvic floor problems have come to understand that Kegel exercises can worsen pelvic floor overactivity and are not the best treatment for every patient, he said.
We were expecting this study to show that a significant minority of men had overactivity in their pelvic floor muscles that could be contributing to their urinary incontinence, but the study actually showed that a majority of men have overactive pelvic floor dysfunction in this population. Most of the men also had some degree of muscle weakness, but not all of them, Dr. Scott said.
She noted that prospective, randomized-controlled studies are now warranted. The following tips might help you control when you urinate.
- If you often need to pee during the night, try to drink less in the two hours before you go to bed.
- But make sure you drink plenty of fluids during the day . If your urine is dark, this could be a sign that you need to drink more.
- Avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol and drinks that contain caffeine , as these can irritate the bladder.
- If you get a sudden urge to urinate, try tightening your pelvic floor muscles and holding. Wait calmly until the urge passes, then walk slowly to the toilet. Dont rush as you walk, as this could make you more likely to leak urine.

The following things can help reduce the pressure on your pelvic floor muscles.

The Exercises Dont Seem To Be Working For Me Am I Doing Something Wrong
Dont give up straight away – improvements wont happen overnight. You might see a small improvement each week, but it can take up to three months before you notice a real difference.
Try to concentrate while youre doing the exercises. If you dont do them properly, they might not help. If youre finding them difficult and need some advice, ask your doctor, nurse or GP to refer you to a continence advisor or specialist continence physiotherapist, who can help you with the exercises.
Here are some more tips:
- Tighten the muscles strongly before and during activities that cause you to leak urine, like getting up from a chair, lifting, bending, coughing or sneezing.
- Tighten the muscles for as long as you can over time, this might help to prevent urine leaking.
- Tighten your pelvic floor muscles strongly after you urinate this should get rid of any urine thats left and avoid any dribbling afterwards.

This stretch hits the tightness that youre sure to have around your hips by targeting the glute muscles. Despite what will most likely feel really good, it is still important to be sure that youre not aggravating the surgical site if its still early in recovery. If you arent feeling it in your glutes remember to draw your knee towards your opposite shoulder.

How Often Should I Do My Kegel Exercises
When you first start doing your Kegel exercises, you may not be able to repeat the exercise 10 to 20 times. This is ok. It is much better for you to do fewer Kegel exercises that make your pelvic floor muscles stronger, than to do more exercises that do not work the muscle in the right way. As you get better at doing your Kegel exercises, slowly increase the number of times you repeat the exercise until you reach 20. Your goal should be to do 20 Kegel exercise three to four times each day.
The great thing about Kegel exercises is that you can do them anytime you want to do them. No one can tell that you are doing these exercises. You do not need any special equipment to do Kegel exercises. You can do your Kegel exercises before you get up in the morning, at lunchtime, at suppertime, and at bedtime. You can do them while you are watching TV or reading. Some men put notes on their refrigerator or on their bathroom mirror to remind them to do their Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises can help both men and women. Some mens partners do the exercises with them. The more you do them, the stronger your pelvic floor muscles will become.
What To Do When You Need More Help With Your Pelvic Floor Exercises
If you are having difficulty doing pelvic floor exercises, your doctor can refer you to a pelvic health physical therapist who can help you learn how to isolate and strengthen the correct muscles. The pelvic health physical therapists at UCLA may use biofeedback and rehabilitative ultrasound among other modalities to help you use your pelvic floor muscle optimally.

How To Do The Male Kegel Exercises
*Male Kegel exercise is best done after emptying your bladder. * Tighten the muscles you located above and hold for 3 to 5 seconds, or as long as you can at first. As these muscles get stronger, you will able to hold them longer. * Relax for 3 to 5 seconds or for as long as you tightened the muscles, then repeat. * Breathe normally. * Do 5 to 7 exercises at a time, 3 times a day minimum. As you get stronger, increase up to 15 exercises at a time, 4 times a day. * In addition for more advanced exercises, you might consider incorporating a series of quick flexes into this routine of long flexes. For example, perform 30 quick rapidly. Then 1 long contraction for as long as you can. Then repeat. Add more repetitions as you get stronger. * The key, as with any physical training, is to set up a consistent routine and to perform the exercise properly.
