Cancer Treatments Can Increase Infection Risk

What Causes Prostate Cancer

Certain cancer treatments can interfere with the way the immune system works. The damage can be short- or long-term. For example, if a person with cancer has their spleen removed due to cancer, this causes long-term damage because the spleen is part of the immune system. On the other hand, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy, either alone or in combination can lead to short-term immune system damage because they affect immune system blood cells for a fairly short period of time. A bone marrow or stem cell transplant uses very high-dose treatments to kill cancer cells that also damage immune system cells for weeks to months.

Prostate Cancer And Incontinence

Incontinence the inability to control urine flow is a common side effect of all therapies directed at the prostate gland. Most patients do eventually regain complete urinary control. Exercises to strengthen the sphincter and surrounding pelvic muscles can help you regain urinary control. These are called Kegel exercises. A training program called biofeedback helps reinforce the proper performance of Kegel exercises. Medications may also help relieve incontinence. A male sling is a surgical option, as is an artificial urinary sphincter which can be surgically inserted in cases of severe incontinence. Ask your doctor about these options.

Signs And Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Most prostate cancers are found early, through screening. Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. More advanced prostate cancers can sometimes cause symptoms, such as:

  • Problems urinating, including a slow or weak urinary stream or the need to urinate more often, especially at night
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Pain in the hips, back , chest , or other areas from cancer that has spread to bones
  • Weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control from cancer pressing on the spinal cord

Most of these problems are more likely to be caused by something other than prostate cancer. For example, trouble urinating is much more often caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia , a non-cancerous growth of the prostate. Still, its important to tell your health care provider if you have any of these symptoms so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed. Some men might need more tests to check for prostate cancer.

Eating Diet And Nutrition

Researchers have not found that eating, diet, and nutrition play a role in causing or preventing prostatitis. During treatment of bacterial prostatitis, urologists may recommend increasing intake of liquids and avoiding or reducing intake of substances that irritate the bladder. Men should talk with a health care provider or dietitian about what diet is right for them.

Evidence For Prostatic Infections In The Adult Prostate

Sintomas De La Prostata Inflamada

The majority of the asymptomatic inflammation that is observed in the prostate is classified as chronic inflammation , however acute inflammation is also observed to a lesser degree . Acute inflammation, as is typically evidenced by the infiltration of neutrophils, is classically an indicator of an infectious process although this is not always the case. It could be argued that the presence of neutrophils in prostatectomy specimens from men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer is due to a response against colonic bacteria introduced into the prostate when the man underwent a prior diagnostic transrectal biopsy. This cannot account for all incidence of acute inflammation in prostatectomy specimens, however, as acute inflammation is also seen on prostate biopsies, and was therefore pre-existing and could not have been induced by the biopsy procedure . Likewise, acute inflammation is also observed on autopsy prostate specimens . Another theory is that since prostatic fluid contains chemokines, such as IL-8 which is a potent neutrophil chemoattractant, injury to the prostatic epithelium or disruption of epithelial architecture and subsequent leakage of prostatic fluid could be potently pro-inflammatory. Addition-al evidence for a high prevalence of acute inflammatory events in the adult prostate, potentially due to bacterial infections, has come out of recent literature regarding tiny concretions called corpora amylacea that occur frequently in the adult prostate.

Does Prostatitis Cause Cancer

Although prostatitis can cause you trouble, it does not cause cancer. There is a blood test some doctors use for prostate cancer called the prostate-specific antigen test . If you have prostatitis, your PSA level might go up. This does not mean you have cancer. Your doctor will treat your prostatitis and may check your PSA level again.

Facts You Should Know About Prostate Infections

  • Prostate infections comprise only small percentage of all men with prostatitis. This small percentage is comprised of acute and chronic prostatic infections.
  • E. coliand other Gram-negative bacteria cause most acute and chronic prostatic infections.
  • Prostatic infection symptoms include groin pain, dysuria, pain with ejaculation, reduced urine output and may include fever, malaise, and periodic recurrence of symptoms even after treatment.
  • Seek medical care if symptoms develop, emergency care if fever or inability to urinate occurs.
  • Diagnosis of prostate infections or prostatitis is made by identifying the agent infecting the prostate.
  • Treatment of prostate infections or prostatitis is usually antibiotics chronic infectious prostatitis may require long-term antibiotic treatment, and severe infections may require hospitalization with IV antibiotics.
  • Home care is limited to pain reduction. Men with a prostate infection or prostatitis need medical care.
  • Follow-up is important to confirm adequate treatment results or to plan additional treatment if the infection reoccurs.
  • Some prostate infections cannot be prevented, but reducing the risk of groin trauma or injury, avoiding sexually transmitted diseases, and staying well hydrated are ways to reduce the chance of getting infectious prostatitis.
  • The prognosis of acute infectious prostatitis is usually good, but chronic infectious prostatitis is only fair because it is difficult to cure.

Haematoxylin And Eosin Staining

All prostate tissues obtained from control and E. coli-infected animals were processed routinely through graded concentrations of alcohol and embedded in paraffin blocks. Five-micron sections were cut, deparaffinised, and rehydrated in increasing concentrations of ethanol. Tissues were rinsed with deionised water for 15s and stained with haematoxylin for 4min. Samples were dehydrated with 70% ethanol followed by 95% ethanol for less than 5s. Eosin was applied for 2min. After staining, samples were dehydrated in an increasing series of ethanol and cleared in xylene .

Metastatic Effects On Other Organs

Recognizing Prostatitis vs Prostate Cancer | Ask a Prostate Expert, Mark Scholz, MD

The presence of prostate cancer in other organs and tissues can interfere with the organs ability to carry out its normal functions. Cancerous cells can have an abnormally high metabolic rate. As such, when present in other tissues, they may dominate the supply of nutrients to that organ, essentially starving the host organ. This, coupled with structural changes the growing tumor makes, can alter the function of the host organ. If you or someone you know has questions about prostate cancer and its effects on the body, voice your concerns with your primary care doctor or urologist. Understanding how prostate cancer works and knowing effects of prostate cancer on body can be a great way to play an active role in its treatment.

The Types And Causes Of Prostate Infections

When the gland is infected, it gets bigger. Usually, the men between the ages of 30 and 50 suffer from infected prostate but this condition is observed in older or younger men too.

There are 4 types of infection in the prostate gland. They have different symptoms and they are caused by different pathogens .

    The four types are:

    • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
    • Prostatodynia

The most common causes of prostate infections are fungi, genital viruses, and streptococcal staphylococcal organisms. There are two ways for these organisms to enter the prostate.

First, by entering the prostate trough the prostate ducts. The other is by leaving the infected urine and again trough the ducts, the organism will end up in the prostate gland.

How Reliable Are The Screening Tests For Prostate Cancer

Neither of the screening tests for prostate cancer is perfect. Most men with mildly elevated PSA levels do not have prostate cancer, and many men with prostate cancer have normal levels of PSA. Also, the DRE can miss many prostate cancers. The DRE and PSA test together are better than either test alone in detecting prostate cancer.

A recent study examining the PSA histories of men enrolled in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging suggests that PSA velocity may be a better indicator of potentially life-threatening cancer than PSA level. PSA velocity is the rate at which serum PSA levels change over time. The study found that men who had a PSA velocity above 0.35 ng/ml per year had a higher relative risk of dying from prostate cancer than men who had a PSA velocity less than 0.35 ng/ml per year. More studies are needed to determine if PSA velocity more accurately detects potentially life-threatening prostate cancer early.

The NCI Early Detection Research Network has a Prostate Collaborative Group, which is applying a variety of strategies to find better ways to detect prostate cancer early. In addition, the NCI’s prostate cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence program is funding projects to identify new biomarkers to detect prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer ‘may Be A Sexually Transmitted Disease’

    Health editor, BBC News online

Prostate cancer may be a sexually transmitted disease caused by a common yet often silent infection passed on during intercourse, scientists say – but experts say proof is still lacking.

Although several cancers are caused by infections, Cancer Research UK says it is too early to add prostate cancer to this list.

The University of California scientists tested human prostate cells in the lab.

They found a sex infection called trichomoniasis aided cancer growth.

More research is now needed to confirm the link, they say in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .

Even Just One Infection May Be Enough To Start Chronic Inflammation Says Sfanos

Circumcision the surgical removal of the flap of skin at the tip of the penis, usually done a few days after birth helps protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Several studies from around the world have shown men who are circumcised are less likely to get HIV, HPV , syphilis, genital herpes, and penile cancer.

Circumcision also lowers your risk of getting prostate cancer. So what is it about the foreskin, that small flap of skin, that raises the cancer risk? Its not the flap itself its simply that the extra layer of skin provides a potential breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Circumcision seems to be protective in that it takes away one extra shelter for bacteria.

    So Does Safe Sex

And that brings us to the subject of sex in general. Men who have not had a history of STDs and who ejaculate more frequently have a slightly lower risk of getting prostate cancer the thought here is that this cleans house, and keeps semen moving through the male plumbing, taking with it any bacteria and other potential cancer causing chemicals that it might pick up when passing through the prostate. So thats good.

    And Then Theres the Barrier

What might disrupt that barrier? Charred meats. He continues: Charred meats can injure the prostate in rodents.

If we could figure out whether inflammation is driving the cancer, says De Marzo, if its causing 20, 30, even 50 percent of prostate cancer, maybe just by reducing inflammation, we could make a huge difference.

New Clue To Prostate Cancer Metastasis: Lipids

Prostate cancer gravitates to its own kind of junk food the cellular version of deep-fried Oreos with a side of chili cheese fries. Scientist Marikki Laiho, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Molecular Radiation Sciences, and colleagues have figured out how the body enables prostate cancers terrible diet, in research funded by the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund. Her basic science work may explain why anti-inflammatory drugs might help protect against prostate cancer.

The culprit is a lipid-regulating protein called CAVIN1, the scientists reported in the journal, Molecular Cancer Research. In lab studies, when CAVIN1 was removed from cells in and around the prostate tumor, the fatty acid that was in those cells spilled into the tumors microenvironment. The effect on prostate cancer cells was dramatic: the cancer cells soaked up the lipids, which then acted as turbo fuel to make the cancer spread more aggressively.

In every prostate cancer cell line we tested, says research fellow Jin-Yih Low, Ph.D., the studys first author, tumor cells universally had an appetite for the lipids, using them to strengthen the protective membrane around the cell, synthesize proteins and make testosterone to support and fuel the cancers growth. The tumor cells then behaved more aggressively, exhibiting invasive and metastatic behavior. Just having access to the lipids gave the tumor cells more power the tumors behavior changed.

What Are The Complications Of Prostatitis

Men with acute bacterial prostatitis may develop . This widespread inflammation can be life-threatening. It requires immediate medical treatment.

Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach. Men with chronic bacterial prostatitis may need lots of antibiotics to treat recurring infections. Some people develop antibiotic resistance, making treatment ineffective.

Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis can lower sperm count, affecting fertility.

    What Is A Prostate Infection

Prostatitis (Prostate Inflammation): Different Types, Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

A prostate infection occurs when your prostate and the surrounding area become inflamed. The prostate is about the size of a walnut. Its located between the bladder and the base of the penis. The tube that moves urine from the bladder to the penis runs through the center of your prostate. The urethra also moves semen from the sex glands to the penis.

Several types of infections can affect the prostate. Some men with prostatitis experience no symptoms at all, while others report many, including intense pain.

A Brief Look At The Prostate Gland

The urethra plays a crucial role in excretion and male sexual function. It carries urine from the bladder to the penis. It also conveys semen from the sex gland to the penis. The urethra passes through the center of the prostate and thus, inflammation of the prostate may affect urination and sexual function.

Infection Inflammation And Prostate Cancer: Smoking Gun Evidence

Because of the unique molecular tools used in this study, Sfanos, De Marzo and colleagues were able to catch the formation of these invasive cancers in real time.

What causes prostate cancer? A landmark study provides new evidence that one cause is bacterial infection. The study was led by Brady scientist Karen Sfanos, Ph.D., and her former graduate student, Eva Shrestha, Ph.D., in collaboration with Angelo De Marzo, M.D., Ph.D., Jonathan Coulter, Ph.D., and colleagues.

The bacterial culprit found in this study belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, which includes E. coli. Better known as a nasty gastrointestinal bug, E. coli causes inflammation in the urinary tract and is a known cause of bacterial prostatitis. As the scientists discovered, colibactin, a genotoxin produced by some strains of E. coli, can also instigate a series of unfortunate events in the prostate. Bacterial infection leads to acute and chronic inflammation, which can lead to the development of a lesion in the prostate called proliferative inflammatory atrophy , first described by De Marzo, William Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., and other Brady scientists it can also cause DNA damage. The presence of colibactin is even more ominous, because it can directly lead to double-stranded DNA breakage.
