Steps to take if you are at increased risk of bleeding and bruising:

Avoid certain medicines. Many over-the-counter medicines contain aspirin or ibuprofen, which can increase your risk of bleeding. When in doubt, be sure to check the label. Get a list of medicines and products from your health care team that you should avoid taking. You may also be advised to limit or avoid alcohol if your platelet count is low.
Take extra care to prevent bleeding. Brush your teeth gently, with a very soft toothbrush. Wear shoes, even when you are inside. Be extra careful when using sharp objects. Use an electric shaver, not a razor. Use lotion and a lip balm to prevent dry, chapped skin and lips. Tell your doctor or nurse if you are constipated or notice bleeding from your rectum.
Care for bleeding or bruising. If you start to bleed, press down firmly on the area with a clean cloth. Keep pressing until the bleeding stops. If you bruise, put ice on the area.

Pain-relieving drugs

There are lots of different types of pain-relieving drugs, such as tablets, patches and injections. Your doctor or palliative care nurse will help you find whats best for you.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy can help control symptoms by slowing down the growth of the cancer. Radiotherapy to help control symptoms is sometimes called palliative radiotherapy.

The most common type of radiotherapy used to reduce symptoms is external beam radiotherapy. This is high-energy X-ray beams targeted at the area being treated from outside the body. It can help to manage symptoms such as pain, blood in your urine or discomfort from swollen lymph nodes. Its also used to treat metastatic spinal cord compression.

You might have slightly more pain during treatment, and for a few days afterwards, but this should soon get better. It can take a few weeks for radiotherapy to have its full effect.

If your prostate cancer is causing bone pain, you may be offered radium-223 to help reduce the pain and delay some other symptoms.

Some types of chemotherapy can make it easier for a person to bruise and bleed. Talk with your doctor to learn what signs to call about.

Some cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and targeted therapy, can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. These treatments can lower the number of platelets in the blood. Platelets are the cells that help your blood to clot and stop bleeding. When your platelet count is low, you may bruise or bleed a lot or very easily and have tiny purple or red spots on your skin. This condition is called thrombocytopenia. It is important to tell your doctor or nurse if you notice any of these changes.

Head or vision changes such as bad headaches or changes in how well you see, or if you feel confused or very sleepy.

Other Surgical Procedures For Prostate Disease

Alternative surgical procedures to TURP include:

open enucleative prostatectomy this involves making a cut in the abdomen to remove a very enlarged prostate. This is the least common form of surgery. The average hospital stay is seven to 10 days
laser TURP a laser is used to remove prostate tissue from the middle part of the prostate, which has the advantage of less bleeding and therefore safer for people on anti-coagulation therapy for other problems, including coronary stents, heart valve or vascular disease
transurethral incision of the prostate similar to TURP except that no prostate tissue is taken out. One to three cuts are made in the prostate near the bladder neck to release the âringâ of enlarged tissue and make a larger opening around the urinary tract
UroLiftÂ® this technique is useful for men for whom medication has not been successful but their prostates are not so enlarged that they need a TURP. It involves the transurethral insertion of staples to separate the lobes of the prostate. It has minimal side effects and preserves ejaculatory and erectile function.

My Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer 1 month ago. The only reason he finally went doctors is because he lost A LOT of weight very quickly and couldn’t keep food down.

He’s current going through tests and his last 2 are this week. We’ll get the results the end of November.

He’s been bleeding from the bum for years but never had it checked out. This weekend I went to visit him….he’s so thin!

He woke up in the morning, went toilet, came downstairs in his dressing gown and said he has to wash because he’s bleeding from the bum again however…whilst he stood there, the blood was gushing down his leg and going all over the floor. He was so upset/embarrassed and I’ve never seen this before so it was a bit of a shock to say the least.

I know he’s at least stage 3 prostate cancer bit this doesn’t look good.

Not only that but my dad has already said he won’t accept all treatment options…if any.

This isn’t really a question but I thought it would be a good place to get my thoughts out.

I’m not a doctor, but I do have a little knowledge of prostate cancer, and to the best of my limited knowledge, bleeding from the bum is not a symptom of the disease. Has he been told that this is part of his prostate cancer? If not, then I fear there may be something else going on.
