Healthy Foods to Eat After Prostate Surgery

SEATTLE Move over, tomatoes! All vegetables especially broccoli, cabbage and their cruciferous cousins may substantially reduce the risk of prostate cancer, according researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Eating just three servings of vegetables a day can cut a mans risk of prostate cancer nearly in half. While carrots, beans, greens and cooked tomatoes all were found to decrease risk, the strongest effect was for cruciferous vegetables. These findings will appear in the Jan. 5 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The bottom line is that if you eat a lot of vegetables, you can cut your risk of prostate cancer by about 45 percent, says Alan Kristal, Dr.P.H., co-investigator of the study. And, if some of those vegetables are from the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cabbage, you may reduce your risk even further.

Kristal and Jennifer Cohen, Ph.D., from the Centers Cancer Prevention Research Program, led the data analysis. Janet Stanford, Ph.D., head of the Centers Prostate Cancer Research Program, also participated. All are from the Centers Public Health Sciences Division.

Men who ate three or more servings of vegetables a day had a 48 percent lower risk of prostate cancer, compared to men who ate fewer than one serving a day . This association was independent of other dietary factors, such as fat intake, and for medical factors, such as history of prostate cancer in a father or brother.

If The Cancer Comes Back

If your prostate cancer comes back at some point, your treatment options will depend on where the cancer is, what types of treatment youve already had, and your health. Whats A Prostate Cancer Diet

The truth is, theres no specific diet that will help you prevent or treat prostate cancer, according to sources such as the University of California at San Francisco . That said, good nutrition may be associated with a lower risk of developing cancer, along with reduced risk of the disease progressing after a diagnosis.

However, the research is still out on whether your diet can really impact prostate cancer risk and prognosis. Steven Canfield, MD, the chief of urology for McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston , and the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, says that while there have been a lot of studies looking at specific diets for prostate cancer, they havent been very revealing. Unfortunately, he says, none of them have really panned out to show any significant prevention.

But he adds an exception: It does seem to be that whats good for your heart is good for your prostate.

The UCSF cancer center developed diet guidelines for prostate cancer that recommend plentiful intake of a wide variety of vegetables and whole grains, healthy , and healthy fats .

If these diet recommendations sound a lot like the Mediterranean Diet, your instincts are right: Theres evidence that this food plan helps lower risk of death from prostate cancer.

Skip grilling. Cooking meat at high temperatures like grilling produces a carcinogen called PhIP. If you do prepare meats on the grill, turn the meat often to minimize the char buildup .

When youre stocking up before your surgery or getting back to shopping after your surgery, take a look at your regular diet and see if there are areas that you could improve.

For example, an easy way to find more nutritious foods is to focus on what youll find in the outside aisles of the grocery store. Most whole foods are in the produce and meat sections.

Make it a goal to get most of your nutrition from whole foods rather than foods that have been heavily processed.

Processed foods may also contribute to inflammation, which could slow your healing.

Eating whole foods supports your health every day. That said, your surgery recovery could be an opportunity to make lasting changes to your eating habits.

Bowel Changes After Prostatectomy

After prostate surgery, it is normal for the patient to feel pain in the abdomen, in the penile area, and at the level of the back and shoulders. Theres also a sense of discomfort in the rectum, like there is a bowel movement concerned. This symptom may result in remaining bloated in the abdomen for a couple of days. However, walking and the right dietary plan can relieve gas and bloat.

Therefore, the days following a prostatectomy should include meals consisting of light ingredients such as sandwiches, soups, yogurt, and any types of liquid meals. Patients should refrain from meals that can cause gas, namely beans, onion, cauliflower, broccoli, or cabbage.

However, a lot depends on the patients age and the kind of surgery done. Studies show that about 60% of patients would make an almost complete recovery within 3 months with no long-term complications. By 12-months, almost 90% of patients can expect to feel much better and nearly normal.

Unfortunately, improvement is slow for some people, and they need 2-3 years to revive their sexual function and get rid of urinary issues. Regretfully, these issues may continue to haunt some for a while.

A radical prostatectomy can be done in 1 of 2 ways. One way is through an open incision , which is called an open prostatectomy. Another way is to use a laparoscope, which is a tube-like instrument with a camera. Your surgeon will talk with you about the best surgery option for you.

Open prostatectomy

In an open prostatectomy, your surgeon will make an incision that goes from your pubic bone towards your belly button . Theyll remove the pelvic lymph nodes first, followed by the prostate gland, and then the structures next to it.

Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted prostatectomy

During a laparoscopic or robotic-assisted prostatectomy, your surgeon will make several small incisions in your abdomen . Some surgeons at MSK are specially trained to use a robotic device to help with this procedure.

Surgical procedures to remove the diseased prostate are usually necessary. Surgical procedures are not always necessary. A physician may also prescribe antibiotics to cure the infection. A bacterial infection can also cause a recurrence of the condition.

An enlarged prostate can be uncomfortable for both men and women. Some of the symptoms of an enlarged male reproductive organ include a weakened urine stream, urgent need to urinate, and urinary tract infections. BPH can also cause damage to the kidneys. A sudden inability to urinate can be life-threatening, as it can lead to bladder and kidney damage. Unfortunately, most men with enlarged prostrates put up with the symptoms for years before they seek treatment. However, many of the men with symptoms finally decide to go to a doctor for proper gynecological evaluation and to begin enlarged prostatic therapy.

Why Do You Leak After Prostate Surgery

There are a few factors that contribute to urine leakage after surgery. The main one is the prostate tissue that was removed during surgery.

In some cases, this can cause nerves around your bladder to be damaged, and this makes it difficult for you to control your urinary flow.

This is more common in older men who have had more time for this nerve damage to occur.

So that is the main reason why you are having urine leakage after prostate surgery. But do not despair! There are many ways that you can stop it from happening in the future!

Studies On Calorie Intake

There are studies that have shown the effects of different calorie intake values on prostate cancer risk. In one study, researchers considered two groups of people. The first group consumed a minimum of 2,439 calories on a daily basis. The second group consumed a maximum of 1,322 calories per day.

Following statistical research, it was found that a higher calorie consumption increases the risk related to prostate cancer. The risk for localized prostate cancer increased by 115% among those who consumed more than 2,439 calories each day this data was compared to the group who consumed a low number of calories.

Another study considered the difference between a diet that included 1,064 calories and another diet that had 2,624 or more calories. The risk of prostate cancer was four times higher among the men who consumed the higher number of calories.

With these factors in mind, it is important that men consider their calorie intake, along with the food they consume. Eating too many calories may negatively impact the prostate gland and essentially increase the likeliness of cancer cells growing in this part of the body.

While In The Hospital

It’s important to your recovery to start moving as soon as possible. Most men are out of bed and walking around the unit on the same day as their surgery. Your nurse will assist you until you can manage on your own. When you first get up, raise the head of your bed, take a couple of deep breaths, and allow your body to adjust to the change in position. Dangle your feet over the side of the bed for a few minutes, then slowly stand up. Be careful because getting up too quickly can make you light-headed.

Get out of bed at least three times each day preferably more. This helps prevent lung infections and blood clots. You may be prescribed an injectable blood thinner to further reduce the risk of blood clots. The more time you spend out of bed, the faster you will recover and the faster your bowel function will return to normal. Your nurse will also give you an oral stool softener and mild laxative to prevent constipation.

In addition to walking, you will be encouraged to do two other things that help prevent complications: Use an incentive spirometer , and wear compression stockings while in bed. Both will be provided and the nurses will instruct you on how to use them.

Foods To Avoid: Caffeine

Avoiding or limiting your caffeine intake, including coffee, tea, energy drinks and fizzy drinks, is another thing that can make a big difference to your urinary health.

Caffeine has a diuretic effect which means it can increase the urge to go to the toilet. On top of this, drinking these beverages, especially late at night, can irritate the bladder and so will make it more likely that youâll need to use the loo. As it is difficult for men with an enlarged prostate to empty their bladder completely anyway, consuming caffeinated drinks will only add to the problem.

There are now so many caffeine-free drinks available that it shouldnât be too much of a challenge to swap your usual brew for something a little kinder to your bladder.

Chamomile tea is particularly beneficial as it has anti-inflammatory properties. If you favour coffee, though, then Bambu, our caffeine-free coffee, is a great alternative.

On top of this, another important drink for your prostate is water. Itâs vital you stay well hydrated if you suffer from the condition but remember not to drink anything at least 2 hours before bedtime.
