Find Your Body Mass Index
BMI is a measurement of the amount of fat in your body based on your height and weight. It can help you learn if your weight is healthy or not. A healthy BMI for an adult is between 18.5 and 24.9.
|30 or higher||Obese|
You can calculate your BMI using the tool on this website: www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm. You can also find your BMI on the BMI table below. To use the table:
For example, if youre 5 feet, 5 inches tall and you weigh 168 pounds, then your BMI is 28. This means youre considered overweight. Your goal should be to achieve a BMI that puts you in the normal range.
If your BMI is above 25, look for the weights that correlate with a healthy BMI for your height. That should be your target weight.
Keep in mind that BMI is only one health measure. Other measures include waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference, which look at weight in your abdominal area. Extra weight in the abdominal area is associated with an increased risk for certain illnesses, even in people with a normal BMI.
Red Wine Coffee And Almonds May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk
While researchers are not sure exactly how boron lowers risk for prostate cancer, the new study shows that men who consumed the greatest amount of boron were 64% less likely to develop prostate cancer, when compared with men who consumed the least amount of boron in the study. The findings were presented this week at the Experimental Biology conference in Orlando, Fla.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer in this country in the year 2000, and about 31,900 men will die of this disease. Boron is a naturally occurring trace element that is believed to play a role in certain cellular processes involved in cancer protection.
“This is the very first study relating dietary boron intake and cancer risk,” says lead researcher Zuo-Fen Zhang, MD, PhD, director of the Cancer Epidemiology Training Program at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health.
While cautioning that the findings are preliminary, he tells WebMD that “there was a big reduction of prostate cancer in people who consumed the greatest amount of boron.”
And those men in the study who ate the second-highest and third-highest amount of boron also had a lower risk than men in the study who consumed the least amount of boron, he says.
The next step, he says, is to repeat the findings in a larger study to see if the results hold.
The Best Foods For Prostate Health
The prostate gland is an integral part of the male reproductive system. About the size of a walnut, it continues to change and grow during a mans lifetime. Maintaining prostate health should be of maximum importance to all men if they want to lead a long and healthy life.
Lets look at three medical issues that can arise as a result of the prostate gland, and some recommendations for the best foods for prostate health.

Tips For Trimming Fat From Your Diet
Reducing the amount of animal fat in your diet may decrease prostate cancer risk. Here are some ways you can trim the fat off your diet:
- Read food labels. Notice the amount of fat your food has in it but also pay attention to the serving size. Eating 2 servings of a food doubles the amount of calories and fat you take in.
- Limit spreads that are high in fat. These include:
- Cream cheese
- Certain salad dressings. Try lemon juice or balsamic vinegar and herbs on salads instead of high-fat bottled dressings.
Potential Risks Of Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is rich in a variety of nutrients but its also rich in calories and fat. While the healthy fats in peanut butter are nutritious, you should consume them in moderation to avoid unwanted weight gain or potential health problems.
Commercial peanut butter brands often have added sugars, oils, and fats. For the best health benefits from peanut butter, look for all-natural products without these added ingredients.
Peanut butter can be a great addition to your diet if you limit your portions to the recommended amount. Some possible health risks of peanut butter include:
Some people have peanut allergies, which can be fatal in some cases. Avoid all peanut products if you have a peanut allergy.
High in Calories
Peanut butter contains a high amount of calories per serving. Make sure to moderate your portions to avoid unwanted weight gain.
High in Fat
While most of the fat in peanut butter is relatively healthy, peanuts also contain some saturated fat, which can lead to heart problems when consumed in excess over time.
Peanuts are high in phosphorus, which can limit your bodys absorption of other minerals like zinc and iron. If you are deficient in these minerals, a diet high in phosphorus can worsen this condition.

Do Peanuts Prevent Prostate Cancer Death
- Posted on:
- May 8, 2017
Crunchy or creamy? Shelled or unshelled? Roasted or boiled? This is usually about how deep one gets when discussing peanuts and peanut butter. The humble peanut might just get a lot more important to men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Peanuts have been around for probably more than 3,500 years. Ancient South American pottery has been discovered decorated with, and in the shape of peanuts. Peanuts became popular around the American Civil War, and many know George Washington Carver as the father of the peanut industry.
So how did the peanut get to this point where it is being touted as a preventative against prostate cancer death?
A major 2016 study published in the British Journal of Cancer showed that patients who consumed nuts five or more times per week after a prostate cancer diagnosis had a significant 34 percent lower rate of overall mortality than those who consumed nuts less than once per month. It is important to note, however, that increased or decreased nut consumption has no correlation with preventing malignant tumors. The men who were followed in the study had already been diagnosed with the prostate cancer.
These findings are quite interesting. This study is suggesting that the peanut and other tree nuts might just help prevent prostate cancer-related death in men who have received a prostate cancer diagnosis. The study suggests consuming five, one ounce servings each week. One ounce of nuts is about one good handful.
Side Effects And Nutrition
Cancer treatment often causes side effects, such as nausea, mouth sores, and taste changes that may make it difficult to eat or drink. Follow these tips to help you get the nutrition you need:
- If water tastes unpleasant to you, take in more liquid though items such as soup, tea, milk or milk substitutes such as almond milk, or a sports drink. Or, flavor your water by adding fresh cut fruit.
- If food tastes bland, try seasoning it with flavorful spices such as garlic, cayenne, dill, and rosemary.
- Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of trying to eat large amounts of food at one time.
- Enhance your protein intake with protein from foods such as fish, egg whites, cheese, beans, or high protein smoothies.
- Suck on mints, chew on gum, or try fresh citrus fruits if you have a metallic taste in your mouth. Brushing your teeth before eating, using plastic utensils, and cooking in glassware can also help.
- If you have mouth sores or a gum infection, use a blender to make vegetables and meats smooth. Try juicing or making smoothies. Some side effects are often treated with medication, so talk with your doctor or another member of your health care team for more information.

Foods High In Vitamin D
So, what vitamin D foods that shrink the prostate gland do we recommend?
Heres a list you can consider for your next visit to the grocery store:
- Salmon: 3 ounces provide your body with 647 IU of vitamin D, which is a lot. It also has omega 3 fatty acids that aid in the absorption of vitamin D. Other types of fish are excellent, too, including cod, tuna, and halibut.
- Soymilk: Regular milk has vitamin D when fortified, and soymilk is an alternative for vegetarians. It has up to 119 IU of vitamin D for each cup.
- Eggs: If you do not take out the yolk, you get a total of 118 IU of vitamin D for each cup of boiled eggs.
- Foods fortified with vitamin D: Other foods such as breakfast cereals and dairy are fortified with vitamin D. You can find fortified foods by looking at the labels.
Health Benefits Of Peanut Butter
1. Rich Source of Protein:
Peanut butter is considered as one of the highest protein oriented food. As per the studies, 100 grams of peanut butter contains 25.9 grams of protein which is undoubtedly very high. Being rich in proteins, peanut butter helps in repairing every cell and thus building our body.
2. Good Source of Vitamins
Vitamin A is useful for eyesight, vitamin C helps to improve the immune system and vitamin E is a very significant micronutrient helps our body to liquefy complex fatty acid structures and fat blockages in the arteries. All these benefits are carried out by one food recipe and that is Peanut butter.
3. Lowers Cholesterol Levels
Although the fats contained in peanut butter are almost equal to that of the fats found in olive but being unsaturated fats, they are not bad for the heart. Rather these fats help to lower bad cholesterol levels and promote the circulation of good cholesterol.
4. Reduce Risk of Gallstones
Gallstones means presence of stone in the gallbladder and peanut butter is found to be very effective in reducing the risk of developing gallstones.
5. Prevents Type II Diabetes
Diabetes II is one of the two major types of diabetes in which the beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin but the body is unable to use it effectively because the cells of the body are dead set against to the action of insulin.taking peanut butter can also be advantageous in dropping the risk of type II diabetes.
6. Regulates Blood Sugar Levels

Limit Salt And Sodium
Eating foods with a lot of salt may raise your blood pressure and increase your risk for stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease. Eat less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Fresh food that isnt processed is usually lower in sodium.
Read food labels to find out the amount of sodium in the product. Choose foods that are labeled low sodium, very low sodium, or sodium-free.
Here are some tips to reduce how much sodium you eat:
- Dont add salt to food at the table.
- Pay attention to the ingredients. Sometimes the name of a food can be misleading. Lemon pepper, spice rubs, and adobo may contain large amounts of salt or other sources of salt, such as MSG .
- When cooking, flavor foods with fresh herbs and spices instead of salt.
- Limit canned foods.
- Limit packaged, processed, pickled, and cured foods.
- Be aware that both fast food and regular restaurant food can contain large amounts of salt.
Should Cancer Patients Avoid Eating Peanuts
The study, , found that a carbohydrate-binding protein called Peanut agglutinin floods the bloodstream after ingesting peanuts and interacts with endothelial cells to produce cytokines. Two particular cytokines IL-6 and MCP-1 are known to promote the spread of cancer by causing endothelial cells to expressive a greater amount of surface cohesion molecules, making them an appealing target for spreading tumours.
Earlier work by Lu-Gang Yu the corresponding author on this study found that as PNA moves through the bloodstream it binds to a particular sugar chain found mainly in pre-cancerous and cancer cells and comes in contact with a larger protein on the surface of tumour cells. This interaction changes the protein in a way that makes cancer cells stickier and more likely to attach to passing blood vessels. It also fosters the accumulation of cancer cells into small clumps that extend their lifespan inside the human body. Many epithelial cancers use the bloodstream as a highway to reach and attack other organs. Carcinomas, which are malignancies of epithelial tissue, account for 80 to 90 per cent of all cancer cases.
Although further research and investigation are still needed, these studies suggest that very frequent consumption of peanuts by cancer patients might increase the risk of metastatic spread,Yu said .

Tips For Nutrition During Cancer Treatment
- Maintain a healthy weight. For many men, this means avoiding weight loss by getting enough calories on a daily basis. For men who are overweight and are obese, this may mean losing some weight. If you are trying to lose weight, it should be moderate, meaning only about a pound a week.
- Get essential nutrients the body needs, such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, such as carotenoids, and water. Not only will your body function better, you will feel better.
- Be as active as you can, such as taking a daily walk. If you sit or sleep too much, you may lose muscle mass and increase your body fat, even if you are not gaining weight.
If you are struggling to eat enough or are eating too much, nutrition counseling may help you get essential nutrients, such as protein, vitamins, and minerals into your diet and maintain a healthy body weight. Ask your health care team for a referral to a registered dietitian or nutritionist. Dietitians and other members of the health care team work with people to meet their nutritional needs.
Which Nut Suppresses Cancer Cell Growth The Most
Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on December 22, 2015
People who eat nuts in their adolescence may have a better chance of fighting off breast cancer later in life, according to data from the Harvard Nurses Study. A follow-up study involving the daughters of the nurses corroborated the findings. Those eating more peanut butter, nuts, beans, lentils, soybeans, or corn were found to have just a fraction of the risk for fibrocystic breast disease, which places one at higher risk of cancer. The protective effects were found to be strongest for those most at risk, such as those with a family history of breast cancer.
Another study out of the British Journal of Cancer found that even two handfuls of nuts a week may protect against pancreatic cancer, one of our most fatal malignancies.
Nuts are described as nutritionally precious, which may explain some of the mechanisms by which nut components induce cancer cell death and inhibit cancer growth and spread in vitro. But which nuts work the best? In my video#1 Anticancer Vegetable, we learned that two classes of vegetablesthe broccoli family vegetables and the garlic family vegetablesmost effectively suppressed breast cancer cell growth. In Which Fruit Fights Cancer Better?, cranberries and lemons took the title.
What about nuts? In terms of antioxidant content, walnuts and pecans steal the show. Twenty-five walnuts have the antioxidant equivalent of eight grams of vitamin C .

How Does Diet Affect Urological Health
The male urinary system consists of many important organs aside from the prostate. The kidneys, ureter, Vas Deferens the tube that is modified during a vasectomy, bladder, urethra, testicles, and penis make up the male urinary structure from top to bottom.
Eating a healthy diet can help the urinary system prevent bacteria, inflammation, and decrease the acidity levels within your urine. These issues, especially if chronic, can lead to many serious health concerns that men of all ages must stay on top of. Again, prevention is key in this case.
The Positive Effects Of Coffee
Milan Geybels, a previous student at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and lead author of the study, says the results of this study differ from those of other studies looking at the same link, as the researchers used a composite definition of prostate cancer recurrence/progression. He adds:
We used detailed information on follow-up prostate-specific antigen levels, use of secondary treatment for prostate cancer and data from scans and biopsies to assess the occurrence of metastases and cause-specific mortality during follow up.
Using these detailed data, we could determine whether a patient had evidence of prostate cancer recurrence or progression.
Additionally, the study also revealed that biological activities that are therefore linked to the consumption of phytochemical compounds that are found in coffee could practically exhibit both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
These are the main characteristic derived from the consumption of coffee that is very helpful to prostate health.
The researchers also mentioned that the phytochemical compounds present include the following functions in the body. The naturally-occurring compounds are discussed below:
- Caffeine, which can inhibit cell growth and encourage apoptosis.
- Diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, which can inhibit cancer growth.
- Chlorogenic acid, which can inhibit DNA methylation.
