Tomatoes Fight Prostate Cancer
A third study presented at the meeting suggests that lycopene — an antioxidant found mainly in tomatoes and tomato products — can cut the chance that prostate cancer will spread.
While the study was too short to determine if lycopene lowered PSA, “we did see evidence that lycopene, at both the 30-milligram and 45-milligram doses slows cell proliferation,” says researcher Nagi Kumar, RD, of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Cell proliferation is a sign of tumor growth and spread.

Outcome Assessment And Follow
We asked participants biennially if they had been diagnosed with prostate cancer during the previous two years and, after a report of prostate cancer diagnosis, we requested permission to obtain medical records to confirm the diagnosis. Approximately 83% of self-reported cases were confirmed via medical record review. The remaining cases were pending review at the time of analysis , or the medical records were unavailable or lacked sufficient information to confirm the diagnosis . We included unconfirmed cases in our analysis due to the high concordance between self-reported diagnoses and actual diagnoses based on the available medical records. We abstracted date of diagnosis, clinical TNM stage, Gleason sum, PSA at diagnosis, and treatment information from the medical records. Additionally, we mailed biennial follow-up questionnaires to participants with confirmed prostate cancer to update information on treatments and disease progression. Deaths were identified by mail, telephone, and review of the National Death Index we ascertain over 98% of deaths using these methods . Four study physicians determined cause of death from death certificates and medical records.
Our primary outcome was lethal prostate cancer, defined as distant organ metastases due to prostate cancer or prostate cancer death that occurred during the follow-up period of 19942008.

Egg Consumption And Bladder Cancer Risk
In a study published in 2013, the researchers from the Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou in China conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between egg consumption and bladder cancer risk. The researchers used data from 4 cohort studies and 9 case-control studies involving 2715 cases and 184,727 participants, obtained through literature search in the PubMed database till February 2012.
The study found no significant association between egg consumption and bladder cancer risk. However, the study suggested a possible relationship with increased intake of fried eggs with bladder cancer risk based on a limited number of studies. The researchers hence suggested to do large prospective cohort studies to confirm these findings.

In The Health Professionals Follow-Up Study , a study observing over fifty thousand male health professionals since 1986 noticed that men who consumed 2.5 eggs per week had a 1.8-fold increased risk of developing lethal prostate cancer compared with men who consumed < 0.5 eggs per week. Now we are immediately going to issue our normal word of caution, and point out that what this study has done is suggest a possible association between eating above average quantities of poultry products and prostate cancer progression in a relatively small group of patients . An association of this type is not the same as a clear demonstration of cause and effect. For example, the men who ate relatively large quantities of poultry may have other factors in common that were not captured in this study. More work will be needed before doctors start telling patients to limit their poultry product consumption to a drumstick and 3 eggs a week.

What Role Does Choline Play

There is no known way to prevent most prostate cancers as the main cause is a genetic predisposition.

Egg Consumption And Gastro
In a study done by the researchers of the University of Sydney in Australia, they evaluated the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of gastrointestinal cancers. The analysis obtained data from 37 case-control and 7 cohort studies involving 424,867 participants and 18,852 GI cancer cases, through literature search in electronic databases until January 2014.
The findings from the study suggested that egg consumption may have a positive dose-response association with the development of gastrointestinal cancers.
The National Health Service has hit back at recent media reports suggesting egg consumption can increase the likelihood of men developing prostate cancer.
The press articles were based on a study by the Harvard School of Public Health which followed 27,607 medical professionals from 1994, recording every four years their diet, smoking status, physical characteristics and tested them for prostate cancer.
Researchers found that men who ate more than two-and-a-half eggs a week were 81% more likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ate less than half an egg a week.
But the NHS has questioned the strength of the findings, highlighting the small number of deaths in the study group, , and suggesting it may be down to chance.
In addition, the men who consumed more eggs were also found to have a higher body mass index, exercise less, were more likely to be smokers and to have a family history of prostate cancer.
